I would have rated ice cream much higher myself.

Only number 10 is surprising, to my mind. Well, maybe the ice cream.
All the others seem like old news, to me. But then, I'm married to "Mrs. Nutrition", and she pushes antioxidant, antioxidant, antioxidant.

Oh, thinking back, I have a comment on number 5:

5. White bread. Common wisdom has it that wholemeal bread is better for you, but in fact white bread flour is fortified with calcium and iron as well as B1 and niacin. And because white bread has less fibre, it means that more of the calcium is absorbed. You should try to give the kids wholemeal as a rule but white bread does have some nutritional benefits.

In order to make the flour white, they do two things:

1 They take out almost all of the nutrients, so that the resultant white stuff is not so attractive to rodents, insects, etc., and presents a pallid, soft breadstuff. Because so much has been taken out, the resulting bread is FAR from nutritious.

2. After that, to make the resulting flour whiter for the undiscriminating public, they bleach the flour, which destroys still more of the nutrients that remain after step 1.

So what do they do? They put back in SOME of the vitamins, minerals, etc. Note that I said "some". If "white bread does have some nutritional benefits", as alleged in Number 5, it's only by comparison to the state after the good stuff was taken out, and not by comparison to products from whole grains, which are close to what nature provided. They don't add those "extra" nutrients to whole grain flour because it doesn't need it; it still has it.

So the last clause of Number 5 is pure bushwah!

If the article is to be believed then they ad calcium. Which might be useful to someone whop doesn't eat much milk or cheese.

Though my guess is.

My guess is that people who eat white bread generally get plenty of whole milk and processed cheese products.

Of course there is no fibre in white bread and its close to pure carbohydrate. Those are serious problems.

Maybe the list was sponsored by Wonderbread like Ricky Bobby.

That's hard to put into bread. It loses something in the processing.

If you wonder about the 'white bread' bit, do the cockroach test....or if you have no current easy access to cockroaches....believe me when I say I have done it.

Put a slice of Wonder bread or equivalent and a slice of whole grain dark bread into a cupboard where roaches are known to frequent. Close the door and wait awhile...(1-2 hours?) Open the door...note what those gourmet bugs are eating. Yes, they WILL eat the white bread if they have no other choices...but they can tell what's good.

Bill, if you feed the cockroaches they'll just want to move in and then you're stuck with them.

What, no music??? Music is the white bread of community, the chocolate of the soul, the baked beans of the brain. See here!

It says of red wine that 'Another ingredient, resveratrol, slows ageing of the heart, bones, eyes and muscles and can even deter cataracts, at least in mice.'

Then a pop-up appears offering tiny, elegant wine glasses for serving wine to mice. Is there no end to marketing efforts?

(Just kidding.)
