This weekend I've been watching stunning full moon rises alongside Mars, and was reminded on the local news that we celebrate the 39th anniversary of the first man on the moon this week.

It makes me wonder. Reminds me life is fragile, including the life of the nation that put that first man on the moon in the Sea of Tranquility. Made me think how much less we have become over these 39 years.

Mars is visible right after sunset. Are you sure that isn't Jupiter you're looking at? The moon is coming out quite late right now.

Stardate.org
says "Mars begins the year as a brilliant orange star high in the east at sunset. As the year progresses, it will grow fainter, shining only about five percent as bright in late summer as in January. It will disappear in the Sun's glare by around mid-October."

We're currently seeing Mars, Saturn & Regulus in the western sky at sunset.

Also, tonight we can find the Great Square of Pegasus looming up in the east — an early foreshadowing of fall.

My father filmed the first walk on the moon as it was shown on TV, on our Super 8 home movie camera. We still have it, after all these years.

I thought everybody knew that Columbus' landing in America was staged.

My father's Super 8 version was a comedy.

"Made me think how much less we have become over these 39 years."

It all depends on where you are standing and what direction you choose to look, just like that sunset.

That's true, Ron. For instance, 39 years ago my miniature dachshund was not even a twinkle in the eye of a roving stud...but today he is a canine collosus of imperial grandure standing on the brink of achieving complete global hegemony.

Or so he seems to think, anyway... ;-)

I think Al Gore has the right idea; we should become a carbon-free energy system within a decade, because we can.

Little bit by little bit, it is already happening. But we need a huge catalyst and I have to admire Gore for trying to become that catalyst, for better or for worse.

It is so off-putting to see the reactionary agents of institutionalized imbecility prance and yell derogatory assertions about the situation, such as defaming the man or calling the whole idea a "liberal" hoax; the ignorance is appalling, the attitudes barbaric, the language demeaning and vulgar and uninformed. All in all a sad performance by the dark, unthinking side of American humanity.
