Subject: BS: Skinniest Counties in the USA From: Alice Date: 27 Jul 08 - 11:40 PM A top 25 list in the news today, the counties with the skinniest people. My county is on the list, Gallatin in MT. Not surprised, as it is a mecca for outdoor sports like skiing, and with a very young population because of the University here. Anyone else on mudcat living in a county on that list?? Alice |

Subject: RE: BS: Skinniest Counties in the USA From: JohnInKansas Date: 28 Jul 08 - 03:18 AM It may be noted that using the CDC general guidelines a BMI of 25 is "overweight." That means that the average person is overweight in all except the first FIVE "skinniest counties in the US." Gallatin MT is #21 on the list. But it is true that them thar' sheep look pretty scrawny when they' been fresh sheared, so maybe it's a genetic thing inherited from D-A-A-A-A-D. John |

Subject: RE: BS: Skinniest Counties in the USA From: Rapparee Date: 28 Jul 08 - 08:51 AM Druther not be in any list. Unfortunately, Pocatello made "Outdoor Life"'s list of one of the best places to live if you like to hunt and/or fish (not to mention nordic ski, hike, camp, bird, boat, and stuff like those). |

Subject: RE: BS: Skinniest Counties in the USA From: Paul Burke Date: 28 Jul 08 - 09:19 AM The thread title misled me at least- where I come from, "skinny" means mean, ungenerous. |

Subject: RE: BS: Skinniest Counties in the USA From: PoppaGator Date: 28 Jul 08 - 10:13 AM Several counties on the list also appear on the list of wealthiest US counties ~ and, not coincidentally, the most expensive areas to live. (Marin, CA, number one on the list, is extremely affluent, as are San Mateo CA, Fairfax VA (Washington DC's toniest suburbs), Sarasota FL, etc.) Maybe folks paying mortgages and property taxes in these areas are too broke to overeat ~ ? Conspicuously absent from the skinny list: the US counties with the second- and third- highest per-capita incomes in the nation, Somerset and Middlesex in New Jersey. Also in the metro New York area is Westchester County, NY, once the very wealthiest among US counties and still in the top five or at least ten ~ not skinny there, either. In Orleans Parish, Louisiana (we call'em parishes instead of counties in our unique and crazy little state), we're mostly pretty fat. The food is too good, and the weather is too damn hot and steamy to exercise much most of the year. |

Subject: RE: BS: Skinniest Counties in the USA From: Bill D Date: 28 Jul 08 - 10:48 AM Amazing...Montgomery County, MD, where I live, is #18. There must be some pretty thin folks about, 'cause I see a bunch doing their best to raise the average! In the last few years, there are many more seriously obese people using powered chairs to shop. Well....maybe that's because all these programs to SELL powered chairs have allowed more obese folks to go shopping. I do find it interesting that 3 areas around Wash DC are on the list...Montomgery, Arlington & Alexandria. But not DC itself or Prince Georges county, which have majority black populations. Poverty, culture, lifestyle & genetics sure do color demographic studies and maps. |

Subject: RE: BS: Skinniest Counties in the USA From: Rapparee Date: 28 Jul 08 - 01:05 PM When it's a choice of eating inexpensive but body-fat producing foods for a week or more expensive but leaner foods for a couple of days, people generally choose the former. I know; I grew up there. |

Subject: RE: BS: Skinniest Counties in the USA From: PoppaGator Date: 28 Jul 08 - 03:36 PM I think that a year or more ago there was a list of the "fattest" cities or metro areas, if not counties, and New Orleans definitely made the cut... |

Subject: RE: BS: Skinniest Counties in the USA From: GUEST,Mike in DC Date: 28 Jul 08 - 08:17 PM The source for these rankings is given as Consultant Bert Sperling of BestPlaces.net. I don't know my Body Mass Index. How come Bert Sperling does? Mike |
