I saw Rod there but I don't think Capital was ever there unless it was before it was in Covent Garden. We were a couple of hundred yards away on the other side of the Edgware Road in the George in York Street for a couple of years.

I think Capital folk club met at the Marquis for a while? I'm sure I remember Rod Shearman singing there in the 1990s..

Packie and I played there occasionally - great club, lovely people. Anne Lennox-Martin was a resident (or at least steady regular) when I first went there, and I later got to be good friends with her (and later still, we all shared a house in north kilburn... but that's another story...)

Hi Nick. I took over Clanfolk briefly from Pete for a year or so. Pete and I played in the same jug band - the "Egbert Sousé All Stars" for several years until 1976, when I moved from London to Sussex.

Pete, as you probably know, is doing puppetry all over the country at the moment - I saw him for an afternoon in Haywards Heath last summer and had a great chat with him. He's a good man, and an old friend.

The BBC Folk Club was started by myself and Peter Charlton as we both worked for the BBC. For the first few years we met at various BBC studios, but later met at the Marquis of Clanricard. Clan Folk was the name of a concert party that we used to take around prisons and other venues. It comprised of Nick Harrison, Vicky Riddle, Jill Smith and her husband on bass, and Pete Charlton and George Harrison. Pete called round to see me in the summer of 2010 and hasn't changed much. He still sings occasionally, but I gave it up in 1984. Jill Smith (now Jill Griggs) is alive and well, and I spoke to George on the phone about a year ago. The Folk scene was great fun, and must be due for another revival soon. Good luck. Nick Harrison.

Yes, that's it. The Pub I though was the Marquis of Clanricarde is, in fact, The Champion and the Marquis I remember is the Marquis of Granby, between Bayswater Road and Ken. Church Street, where I had my wedding reception. God, so many years ago.....

Ah, you could be right, Diane. I used to work in Eastbourne Terrace opposite Paddington Station and frequented quite a few pubs in the area (far too frequently). The one I definitely remember going to a folk club at was The Oak in Westbourne Terrace (or was it Bishop's Bridge Road by then?). Used to drink in The Sussex as well and a superb Victorian pub nearby whose name I forget.

The pub at Shepherd's Bush roundabout was The Duke of Clarence.

I wonder if The Leveller is thinking of the right Marquis?
Clanricarde Gardens is by Notting Hill Gate tube. It's a two-stop tube ride to Lancaster Gate then a hike up Sussex Gardens to Southwick Street on the eastern side of Paddington to reach where Clanfolk used to be. And didn't it also move to Camden Town for a bit to a pub at the top of Parkway that's also now demolished?

I went once or twice. For three years from '67 to '70 I lived practically next door in Clanricarde Gardens. Can't remember much about it, though - what is it they say about the sixties.......?

Thanks Diane - good to know the old Marquis still exists and hasn't been knocked down - even if it isn't a pub any more. I believe that pub you mention was indeed called the Duke of Cumberland, though I never went there myself.

The Marquis of Clanricarde still exists but is now a restaurant. I remember someone called Della who was involved in Clanfolk organisation. Sometime around the mid 70s, some of the residents at the time (George MacColl and Gordon McCulloch as I recall) moved on to that pub on Holland Park Avenue by Shepherd's Bush roundabout whose name I don't remember (might have been the Duke of Cumberland). This closed some years ago.

Just curious if anyone remembers or attended any of the "Clanfolk" sessions at the Marquis of Clanricarde in Bayswater in the late 60s? "Clanfolk" was the name of the BBC Folk Club. Pete Charlton ran it for many years - I ran it for 6 months around 1970 - and I've no idea what happened to it after about 1972 or so. We booked some great acts of the time - Leon Rosselson, Martin Carthy, Tim Hart & Maddy Prior, the Yetties, Ian Anderson (not the flute-player), John James, Johnny Silvo and many, many others. My guess is that the "Marquis" (a genuine Irish pub) doesn't exist any more - anyone know any different?

(And then off to the "Pillars of Hercules" for a pint of Youngers Scotch bitter on the following Saturday before queuing up for the allnighter at the Cousins...)
