Subject: Rescue knackered tapes? From: Richard Bridge Date: 13 Aug 08 - 11:05 AM I've had a search and I can't find teh messages I'm looking for. A nice woman has just given me an old Ferrograph Series 7 (whoopee) and I can use it, once I've got it sorted, for transcribing my old reel-to-reel tapes. But she, the nice woman, has some old tapes of her father's that want rescuing. I mean rescuing!! THere was a 'catter who did such rescues - but I can't find the thread or any menton. Whose memory is better than mine?? |

Subject: RE: Rescue knackered tapes? From: Bonzo3legs Date: 13 Aug 08 - 01:51 PM Well, you need to get hold of Adobe Audition - there are sites from which you can download the software together with the date crack. Having loaded the audio into AA, you can reduce hiss/noise, alter sound levels, and do all manner of things to restore something listenable. |

Subject: RE: Rescue knackered tapes? From: Ebbie Date: 13 Aug 08 - 09:35 PM Knackered. Reminds me of Allan C and Bill Sables when they were travelling through Mudcatland. For a number of days Allan thought Bill had told him that he was 'nekkid' and spent most of the night wandering why on earth Bill would have thought he'd want to know that. |

Subject: RE: Rescue knackered tapes? From: Howard Kaplan Date: 13 Aug 08 - 10:51 PM For old tapes that need professional attention, you might consider Richard Hess, who's located in one of the northern suburbs of Toronto, Canada. His web site will tell you about his range of equipment and services. I haven't needed his services myself, but I've encountered several people who were pleased with his work and none who were displeased. |

Subject: RE: Rescue knackered tapes? From: Richard Bridge Date: 14 Aug 08 - 10:41 AM Passed it on. I hope something comes of it before she throws too much away - there were paper tapes like I had never seen before, but I have no idea what the old man had recorded. I've resued the Ferrograph series 7 - I gather it has had a new pinchwheel and now I need to find someone to give it a full service. I've also rescued an Akai model 910 - I've never seen one of those before although I have a 4000DS with a record head (or switch) problem. The 910 specs do not look very promising - 40-hz -12kHz 3db at 7.5 ips and THD of 2% @1khz @0Vu |

Subject: RE: Rescue knackered tapes? From: Jim Carroll Date: 14 Aug 08 - 02:48 PM Richard, Somebody passed this information to me early this year Jim Carroll Jim - Mr C. Braddock at the Tape Recorder Centre in Blackpool, Lancashire used to keep my Tandberg reel-to-reel and cassette machines working. He usually had Uher, Ferrograph and Revox machines of various ages in stock, so I guess he could cope with any machine you need working on. My machines haven't needed his attention in recent years as they are getting used less and less, but he still appears to be operating from the same shop;- Tape Recorder Centre, Blackpool Tape Recorder Centre, 266 Waterloo Rd Blackpool, FY4 3AF, Lancs, UK +44 1253 345049 (in case the above link doesn't work) Ross |

Subject: RE: Rescue knackered tapes? From: Richard Bridge Date: 14 Aug 08 - 05:58 PM Thank you again, all. Having had a rummage round the Ferrograph I am heartbroken to say that it is a very fine 722 - I have not tested it yet - from 1972 when it cost over £360 which was a LOT then. I am heartbroken because the 722 is half-track stereo - which makes it no use at all for playing my 1/4-track tapes. I have offered it back to the donor or told her I will ebay it for her favourite charity. After I've tested it and got ready and listed it I will put the ebay link up here for any enthusiasts to follow. I am told it had new pinchwheels not long ago. I will have to get my AKAI 4000DS mended in stead. |
