Subject: Welcome, Jayto! From: M.Ted Date: 14 Aug 08 - 01:24 PM I don't usually do this kind of thing, but Jayto has really livened up a few threads since dropping in--we had a great discussion of poisonous snakes, that moved into the area of folkloric superstitions and beliefs, particular as transmitted by children, in the "Relationship Between Folk and Country" thread-- In the "Saddest Murder Ballad" thread, he passed along some great information from his own experience about "sin eaters", which is a very, very, interesting subject that, to my recollection, has never been brought up on Mudcat before, and which I have never heard accounted from direct experience. And then, in the "American Audiences Gone" thread, gave a very informative account, with links and names, of what seems very much to be resurgence of interest in playing and partying to oldtime/bluegrass/folk/roots music among the new generation of young party people. Jayto lives in the the Appalachians, in Kentucky (I think), and, from my impressions, again, seems to be interested in the Travis/Rager/Chet Atkins related styles of fingerpicking that some of us at least, think are among the highest achievements of American Culture. His inputs have been a refreshing diversion from the and tediously picayune discussions of "what and whether" that have been tied around our necks recently. So welcome, Jayto, it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance!! I |

Subject: RE: Welcome, Jayto! From: Jayto Date: 14 Aug 08 - 01:30 PM Thank you M.Ted I have really enjoyed mudcat everyone in here is great and the discussions are really interesting. I am from Kentucky and I am a former National Thumbstyle guitar champion (US). I live and grew up about 15 miles from where Merle Travis and Mose Rager are from so that kind of explains my whole love of Travis/Rager Thumbpicking. I have studied not just the style of playing but I know alot of the family of Mose Rager and Merle Travis so if anybody has any questions about the style or people let me know. I am 2nd generation in the style. My cousin Eddie Pennington learned from Mose Rager and the he taught me how to play it. I appreciate everybody on here and what you are all doing with Mudcat. This is a site that needs to be here. Thanks |

Subject: RE: Welcome, Jayto! From: M.Ted Date: 14 Aug 08 - 02:02 PM Here's a couple picking question--Do you use only the index finger, and do you you anchor your right hand to the guitar, or keep it free? |
|
Subject: RE: Welcome, Jayto! From: Jayto Date: 14 Aug 08 - 02:09 PM Mose and Travis used only the index finger. That is the traditional way of playing. They both would anchor the rest of thier hind on the guitar body. Even the forward rolls were done with just the thumb and the index finger example STrings not notes 4 3 2 would be hit with the thumb (4th string,3rd string,2nd string) then 4 3 with the thumb and 1 with the first finger I use all of my fingers though at times even my little finger. Depends on what sound I am going for. If I want a definite Travis sound I only use my index and a very thick thumbpick. |

Subject: RE: Welcome, Jayto! From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 14 Aug 08 - 02:14 PM All it took was one session in Mudchat to realize what a great addition jayto is to this place. Anybody who loves The Tractors and can recite lines from their songs is alright with me!!!!! Jerry |

Subject: RE: Welcome, Jayto! From: PoppaGator Date: 14 Aug 08 - 02:16 PM I've also noticed a whole lot of interesting writing from a brand new name ~ welcome from me too! The most articulate writers of posts may or may not be the greatest musicians among us. I, for one, consider myself much more talented and accomplished as an off-the-cuff essayist than as a guitar player. (Even my halfassed vocalizing is probably a tad superior to my intrumental ability.) So I am very impresed to learn that Jayto is a champion picker as well as a very interesting prose voice. |

Subject: RE: Welcome, Jayto! From: Jayto Date: 14 Aug 08 - 02:18 PM When the Tractors first came to Nashville they would send maps to the record labels. On this map they would draw a tractor getting closer and closer to Nashville. I thought that was kinda witty it conjured up a sense of anticipation funny marketing lol. It must have worked.Check out that christmas album I told you about if you can find it. |
