BTW... in case you haven't heard, Maple Leaf added another 50 or 60 products to the recall. And, for Atlantic Canadians... there are some Sunrise products too... and other brand names... not just Maple Leaf. You can get the list at the website.

Incidentally, as far as NJ dogs go, I think Hot Dog Johnny's is over-rated. It's a nice looking place, nice scenery, but the dogs are average. The fries are excellent, however, and they have birch beer.

Absolutely!!   It is a strong bond with where you were brought up. If you grew up in North Jersey, the ritual of visiting a hot dog stand, usually one of the first stops after getting a license to drive, is sacred. Family visits as a youngster, first dates, etc. - great memories that are wrapped in a bun!!

I love a hot dog at the shore, and I do not think that there is a Mason Dixon divide- I think we celebrate our traditions that we grew up with and have fond favorites, but there is a passion that extends beyond it. That website I shared was a great guide, and I know many people that enjoy sampling the dogs at various establishments. We have our favorites, but we love to sample!!

No way would I knock South Jersey or the shore, but if you grew up in North Jersey, you know all the hot dog haunts and they become a special part of your life.

Hometown Tales is a GREAT site for Jerseyites, RangerSteve - they used to have some wonderful video on that site about Lucy the Elephant and the Jersey Devil - not sure if it's still there, but I hope so...the Pork Roll documentary (which was absolute genius) seems to have disappeared.

I used to subscribe to their podcast, which is worth a listen.

Lots of South Jersey hotdog places?!! Surely the ONLY place to eat a hot dog in Jersey is down the shore, on the boardwalk of your choice...it's part of the dining experience!

Most of you here at the 'Cat did not spend a lot of your life's weekends at various racetracks as both a spectator amd a participant. I've eaten dogs at racing facilities ranging from Indianapolis to assorted short tracks, both dirt and pavement, across the midwest to road courses from Atlanta to Connecticut to New York and Minnesota. No matter where you go, almost at every one the good ol' dog is the cheapest sorta' real food on the menus of the concession stands.

With that being true, I judge the value of a hot dog and the track by the condiments available. If for instance the dogs are not available with coney sauce and the condiments come in tiny plastic pouches, this track sucks. I don't care if it has a great racing surface or national prominence, the condiments make the meal and with those silly little packets you can't get enough on a dog to get full or even a decent case of food poisoning!

Now let me tell you what IS right. If I find a track with fairly decent dogs, I check the condiments. And that means a condiment table! With or without flies they are the only thing worthwhile. Plus on a truly good one you'll find 2 different mustards, relish, ketchup, onions......and on the very best ones, sauerkraut! Now you buy your CONEY dogs (often 2 for as little as 3-4 dollars) and then go load them down with heavy applications of relish and onions and kraut along with the mustards to bulk it up. And then......and only in the past 10 years has this been available (thanks to Nachos) you ask if the vendor will top them off with a bit of cheese sauce. Believe it or not, most will happily do so. Before the cheese sauce goes on however it is wise to check for dead flies and other bugs which may have combined with the relish or onions or kraut at that open air and open container Condiment Stand.

You now have a serious meal on your plate that started out as two pathetic little dogs. You need to be sure there are plenty of napkins available as well as "sporks" or spoons or forks since these hot dogs have now gone beyond any means of eating them with your hands.

Four bucks and you got yourself a real meal you can eat to the sounds of screaming engines and tires, smells of hot asbestos, hot rubber, and burning methanol, and the occasional squeal of brakes and the thunks and sounds of a crash. On the best days you also remembered to take some Zantac prior to arriving and have a pocket full of Rolaids and/or Tums.

Life doesn't get much better than that!

As to Sirloin steak ten feet away was $2.77 a pound?????
Over here it averages £7.50/pound ($15?)

We used to have a Nathan's on the boardwalk in Atlantic City, and I was all about the corn dogs and cheese fries. Heaven.

Someone has mentioned the abomination that is scrapple. I think they should have to do some sort of penance for making me even think about it.

Here, 70 miles from the biggest pork er... factory... on the continent, expensive hotdogs are about $ 1.50 a pack at the Walmart. Cheap dogs are 79 cents. Sirloin is 5-8 dollars.

I was taken aback today... regular "pork and beef" Sunrise (our local guys) hot dogs.. $2.69 a pound pak. Sirloin steak ten feet away was $2.77 a pound????? I like the Sunrise dogs but come on.

My mother used to cut up hot dogs and simmer them in barbeque sauce for a while and serve that on top of minute rice. We used to love that when I was growing up, and I've even prepared it for myself as an adult using veggie dogs (it's just as good that way).

Only the first sing mentioned deals with hot dogs on that particular recording. The rest is just classic stuff off of the same recording.

HOWEVER, I can point you toward the title song of the Buck Owens recording "Hot Dog!" (Capitol C4-9113-cassette), and if THAT'S not enough to whet your appetite and you want entire CDs of songs at least in the same spirit....

The aforementioned Buck Owens song may be the only specific hot dog song on there, "El Paso Chile Company Authentic Genuine Daddy Q BBQ Blues (EMI Music Special Markets 72433-84341-2-5) was put out on behalf of said chile company and is full of songs about RCs & Moon Pies, BBQ, Chicken, Chili Peppers and Onions by the likes of NRBQ, Mojo Nixon and Tennessee Ernie Ford. I found mine at a yard sale I'd google the company about availability. Good luck.

Much in the same vein and probably more readily available is "Livin' In The House Of Blues: Barbeque Blues" (House Of Blues 51416 1388 2) chock full of goodness from the present back to the days of 78s w/ Louis Jordan, Professor Longhair, Saffire, Barbeque Bob, Bessie Smith and Slim Gaillard in the mix. Another cheap find from a library sale.

Neither are anything I would have paid list for but couldn't resist for a well spent buck or two.

....and of course, there's always "The Happy Scrapple Daddy Polka" by The Holy Modal Rounders from "Good Taste Is Timeless" (Sundazed SC 6208 on CD. The LP was on Metromedia) which mentions most kinds of sausage other than frankfurters in an orgy of Pennsylvania partying at its best. You'll either love it, or become a vegetarian on the spot.......

Been there, done that. I grew up (to the extent I ever did) down the road in Kensington. When were you in the Wheaton area?

And not pictured is/was Little Oscar, a midget that used to tour grocery stores in his Weenie-mobile, as pictured, and give demonstrations and pass out samples. Since I collected antique metal advertising signs, a friend who assistant-managed a grocery store gave me the giant inflatable Oscar Meyer Weinerand the inflatable (squeaking) Little Oscar doll which I no longer have, because he thought I'd like them.



A true story:
Also, at the same time, I'd been given a couple of large plastic store signs that look like the containers of Oscar Meyer Bologna. I was trying to sell them off at a flea market when a high wind struck up and blew the light plastic sign away into an aquaintance who was selling her stuff a few tables down.

"Severn, what the HAIL (she was Southern) is THIS?" she asked, holding it aloft.

I said without hesitation, "The answer, my friend, is bologna in the wind.....", while my best friend at the next table cracked up and was just about rolling on the ground. He still reminds me about it.

No siree, they just don't HAND you straight lines like that enough in real life....

The only one I will eat is made right here in Portland Maine. It is red (Dye) and delicious. If I dwell on what's in it, I won't eat it. Eyeballs? I doubt that. Lips? maybe, but don't forget, you probably eat eggs don't you?
