B.K.
Thanks for posting these. They are all fine songs---but everyone owes it to themselves to hear "A DELICATE BALANCE"      (It is a wonder of a song. I sang it for years--as much for my personal wellbeing as for the benefit of the audience.

Some fine music there from an old friend----the late TOM DUNDEE...

I never knew Tom to perform wearing sunglasses -- but you can tell from the shadows that there must have been a blinding spotlight positioned just behind the camera.

BK Lick, Tom was a dear, personal friend of mine who was capable of ANYTHING. He was, truly one of the funniest, least affected, unpretentious performers I've ever had the privilege to be around. When I saw him wearing sunglasses I laughed out loud...and for just a few seconds he wasn't gone. His humor could be SO understated HE might be the only one in the room who 'got' it. But, he LOVED it when any of his buddies would pull a good joke on him.

We were working on his 1st LP entitled 'A Delicate Balance' @ Birdland Studios in Chicago. The song was 'You're So Pretty When You Smile". Tom was having trouble getting the vocal just right. Buster Ursini who, also co-produced along w/Tom and me suggested we take a break and go get a beer. So, we went to a little dive around the corner where we had several...beers AND shots. 25 odd games of 'flipperball'(pinball) and we staggered back arm in arm singing Jim Reeves' 'He'll have To Go'...Poot yer SWWWWEEEEEETTT Leeips a leetle closer, etc. Three VERY drunk young men w/o adult supervision. So, Tom goes into the vocal booth and proceeds to render the most heart-wrenching, tearful, achingly FLAT vocal in the history of recorded music. Buster and I looked at each other and said, 'Oh, we can't pass THIS up...let's tell him it was SO good we want to wait 'til tomorrow to listen to the playback." And that's what we did. In front of a room full of people Buster played the track...NOBODY laughed louder than Tom. He saved a special copy of the song w/THAT vocal. I'll bet it's around in his personal effects someplace. He told me later that was his favorite moment in the entire process. Man, I REALLY miss him...

Everything I've read here mirrors the same man I came to know in a very short time.

My sister passed away nearly six months later, then a month later my mom passed away. 2006 was a very hard year to look back on, yet these vidz remain a very certain accumulation of the spirit Tom embodied.

For those interested I have the same video available on my website in higher resolution.

Also, for those interested I will have copies of Toms portion of my benefit concert available upon request at my website...for free....postage pending.

Please pass this information around. www.erickinkel.com

Also at my website I will be re issuing my 1988 release " A Long Time Coming" cassette album as a newly remastered CD. Re titled "A Long Time Away".

ALTC includes my versions of "Take me out to the ballgame" as well as Michael Smith's, "The Dutchman" and are also available at my website as a "Single" CD rom twogether, called "Antique Spirits".

The new re issue will be dedicated to my late sister and mother as well as Tom. Those with whom a such personal loss and toll inspired me to carry on. It will also include two bonus tracks "Snowflakes" and "The Pendulum".

All available at;

www.erickinkel.com

Drop me a line and let me know if you'd like to acquire any of the things I've mentioned.

Any of Toms friends are friends of mine ...for sure!

Eric Kinkel

Art's much too modest a man to mention this, so I will. He played the banjo on Tom's song entitled 'My Dog' on the 'A Delicate Balance' LP.

Jeff,
That's right, I did. Thanks for reminding me of that. I loved that album.

My first appearance on an LP was the one called GET FOLKED that came out on Mountain Railroad Records from Rockford, Illinois' folk club called Charlotte's Web. I think Tom's cuts on that same record were his first recordings too. Dave Snaker Ray produced that old LP; must've been around 1974. Some good recollections there.

Art,

Dean Milano of the Casualaires and countless other musical projects is doing a book on the history of music in Chicago during the 60s and 70s. You were an intregal part of that. He needs pictures and recollections. Contact him @ deanguy@ameritech.net. I'm sure he'll be delighted to hear from you if he hasn't contacted you already. I know he's spoken w/Rich Warren/WFMT, Kathy Kelly/WNUR, etc. You've got first hand presense of the 'Gate of Horn', 'Quiet Knight', original OTS @ Dawn Greening's house, etc. My own experience didn't start until the mid 70s, but I've given him what I could. Your info and endorsement would mean much more, I'm sure.

Jeff,

I've been in contact with Dean Milano. His book ought to be a real document of that musical era in Chicago---as was Clay Eals' book on Steve Goodman. For me, it's nice to "be here" to see recognition of the people and those times happening.

I think that I've told Dean that he is welcome to use my photos for the book. Also, any of my postings here on Mudcat about that scene. If not, I meant to do that.

I hope you are well!
Art

Jeff, Mudcat was intended to be a forum for communication for musicians, so you're right on task - and I'm enjoying eavesdropping.

Thank you, Joe.

In that case Art would you be so kind as to go to http://www.jonesongs.com and click on the jeffrey c. jones link and it will take you to my Myspace page. In my post I included a front slash / in between jonesongs and my name that shouldn't have been there.

BTW, Priscilla Herdman recorded a song of mine on her 'Forgotton Dreams' LP back in 1980 and I just received a royalty check from Rounder Records. The song is entitled 'Dream' and closes out the CD. It was, originally on Philo then Flying Fish then in 1993 Rounder obtained the rights, re-mastered it to the CD format and she added two more songs. They graciously paid me from inception to the present...they were only liable from 1993 on. W/all the horror stories of artists being denied royalties it's nice to be able to share a good one. Sorry for the thread hi-jack...I'll stop now.

Thanks for the heads up on my book, Jeff.

Anybody out there who performed in Chicago during the '60s and '70s- I like to try to get you into the book, so send me some photos of yourself or your band from that period and a short bio, and we'll hopefully be able to include you.

Thanks!
