Subject: Song for Colin Kemp From: Tig Date: 26 Aug 08 - 12:51 PM Here's the words for the song Stanley Accrington wrote in memory of Col K which was first performed at the Metropole on the Friday night of Whitby 2008. It says it all. Stan invites us to "feel free to use/adapt/circulate as you wish. The tune is anything that fits" Please will somebody put it into the DigiTrad for me so the memory is there for all time? Colin Kemp Chorus: The Keeper of the Portal, The Guardian of the Door His presence seemed immortal but we will see him no more We'll miss his cheerful chuckle and and it leaves us all the poorer So let's raise a glass or two to Colin Kemp It's easy to think Festivals are all about booked guests Some prima donnas on the stage that always have impressed But there's got to be somebody to look after all the rest No one did it better than big Col The first timer who is baffled and needs a helping hand The one who's lost her ticket, the old feller who can't stand The harassed organiser who's had to change all that was planned They came and dumped their problems on big Col Chorus Armed with only common sense, warm nature and a smile He could restore calm to chaos and always go the extra mile It wasn't rocket science but he did it with such style And everybody seemed to know big Col Chorus St Peter's at the Pearly Gate, but he's getting on a bit There's some as what wears halos who think that he should quit But now he's got a new assistant who with the angels is a hit Keeping them in line you'll find big Col Chorus Some people have tried to define exactly what is "Folk" It's like trying to nail jelly, to attempt it is a joke But if you want to know what Folk's about - you should have met this bloke Too soon taken from us, Colin Kemp Chorus So here we are in this place each in our usual role Yet I sense a spirit presence – though not a tortured soul For Colin's ghost is surely haunting at the Metropole Keeping things in order is big Col Chorus Thanks Stan. |

Subject: RE: Song for Colin Kemp From: skipy Date: 26 Aug 08 - 06:14 PM Wonderful, too bad it was not written 2 years ago (so that he could here it!), bless him, he was wonderful, as usual he took charge in 2007, when we where all piled into the pay & display waiting for the campsite to dry out. He stode up & down talking to all & sundry, in control, smiling, keeping us all upto to date, big wellies on, big heart beating, radio in hand. I went on site this year & thought "Colin" is HERE & I an SURE that he was & always will be. GREAT loss. Skipy |
Subject: RE: Song for Colin Kemp From: Jeri Date: 26 Aug 08 - 06:50 PM This is the photo by Micca. The song isn't as specific as Stanley's wonderful tribute. I didn't know him that well, but Stanley's song is the sort that will bring his friends and family together with knowing smiles. Thanks for sharing it with everyone Tig. Here's the one I wrote, for what it's worth: Bright Water The sun is low as the day it fades Wild birds ride the wind and fly Tides and seasons will not wait What shines beyond this sunset gate Bright water and the endless sky You can sail for days and not reach land Wild birds ride the wind and fly Clear blue above, and far below We dream of where we may not go Bright water and the endless sky There's a photograph of you Wild birds ride the wind and fly The sun behind shines through your hair The world was yours for a moment there Bright water and the endless sky Up into that endless blue Wild birds ride the wind and fly We watch and dream from diamond sand At the place forever touches land Bright water and the endless sky |
Subject: RE: Song for Colin Kemp From: Tig Date: 27 Aug 08 - 03:53 PM Refresh so people coming back from festivals/going to festivals can see it. Ask Stan to sing it if you see him. |
Subject: RE: Song for Colin Kemp From: Mrs.Duck Date: 27 Aug 08 - 05:14 PM What tune did he use? |
Subject: RE: Song for Colin Kemp From: Tig Date: 28 Aug 08 - 01:58 PM Stan wasn't sure Jane - that's why he said to use any tune we liked that it would fit to. He was certain it was based on a traditional one but that was as far as it went. Similarly we have an invite to adapt it as we like. I think, like Col, it's a 'flexisong' which can be sung to suit anyone. But what a tribute! |
Subject: RE: Song for Colin Kemp From: MMario Date: 28 Aug 08 - 02:30 PM Jeri - you got a tune for that one? |
Subject: RE: Song for Colin Kemp From: Andy Jackson Date: 28 Aug 08 - 04:53 PM I've sang it to myself (often the best way most would say) to a rough adaptation of Tom Lewis "Recall". Unaccompanied singing has the advantage of much freer form, but it's good to be consistant with the chorus. Andy |
Subject: RE: Song for Colin Kemp From: Andy Jackson Date: 28 Aug 08 - 04:55 PM Sorry MM just realised you were on the other song. I'm still working on the Stan one from earlier. Andy |
Subject: RE: Song for Colin Kemp From: Tig Date: 30 Aug 08 - 05:55 PM Is it really a full year since he died? He's missed as much as ever. HUGS to his mum whom I talked to yesterday. She's doing ok (still shredding his paperwork) and his house is now sold. But she's still missing hugs :-) |
Subject: RE: Song for Colin Kemp From: skipy Date: 30 Aug 08 - 06:45 PM (((((((((HUGS)))))))) |
Subject: RE: Song for Colin Kemp From: Jeri Date: 30 Aug 08 - 06:57 PM MMario, yes there's a tune. Sorry, but I thought you were asking about Stan's song too. I only net him when he was over here for the Getaway and a while afterward, but he's not easy to forget. Hugs to Col's mum from across the pond. |
Subject: RE: Song for Colin Kemp From: Herga Kitty Date: 31 Aug 08 - 06:30 PM Miskin Man - thanks for singing the song at the Wareham Wail last night. Kitty |
Subject: RE: Song for Colin Kemp From: Verna Date: 01 Sep 08 - 03:53 PM Just heard about this today from friends. Thank you Stan. Life here in Ireland has somehow had something lacking for the past year. Missed by us especially and by all the friends he made here during his visits He will never be forgotten. These song words will be framed and hung on our wall. Verna & Ray |
