Subject: RE: And it stoned me -- Van Morrison ,,,,,,, From: GUEST,Johnmc Date: 25 Sep 08 - 11:40 AM It is a great song, with its unexpected melodic sections and typical Van M imagery, mixing the naturalistic ( Belfast countryside, presumably) with the mystical. |
Subject: RE: And it stoned me -- Van Morrison ,,,,,,, From: PoppaGator Date: 25 Sep 08 - 12:07 PM Better late than never! I like this song, too, and have been enjoying ot for a long time; since the early 70s, I think. I believe it may have been on the "Moondance" album. Someone else can probably either verify this or set us straight. |

Subject: RE: And it stoned me -- Van Morrison ,,,,,,, From: GUEST,Michael Harrison Date: 25 Sep 08 - 12:15 PM Yes, it was on the "Moondance" album; I believe it was the first cut on side two. A very good song on a great album - one of my favorite albums ever. Unfortunately, "Moondance" has been played to wits end, but there are several cuts on the disc that stand alone. Cheers,.............mwh |
Subject: RE: And it stoned me -- Van Morrison ,,,,,,, From: Lonesome EJ Date: 25 Sep 08 - 12:23 PM "oh, the water!" I have always liked the three images of water in the song; as rain, from which one must take shelter, as swimming hole, which offers relief from the heat, as cold drink, which quenches the thirst. And all three forms "stone me to my soul". Really Morrison at his most lyrical. |
Subject: RE: And it stoned me -- Van Morrison ,,,,,,, From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 25 Sep 08 - 12:46 PM The year was 1990. Van Morrison released two albums: "Moondance" and "Astral Weeks". Two very different moods. I have often used "Moondance" as a pick-me-up when I was feeling down. If I really wanted to wallow in my depression I put on "Astral Weeks". Certainly these were highlight albums for Morrison. He has been so productive and has varied his interests so much that I would hesitate to call them the pinnacle of his success, but they are both wonderful in their own way. Roger in Baltimore |
Subject: Lyr Add: AND IT STONED ME (Van Morrison) From: bobad Date: 25 Sep 08 - 12:50 PM Lyrics to AND IT STONED ME :Van Morrison Half a mile from the county fair And the rain keep pourin' down Me and Billy standin' there With a silver half a crown Hands are full of a fishin' rod And the tackle on our backs We just stood there gettin' wet With our backs against the fence Oh, the water Oh, the water Oh, the water Hope it don't rain all day [Chorus:] And it stoned me to my soul Stoned me just like Jelly Roll And it stoned me And it stoned me to my soul Stoned me just like goin' home And it stoned me Then the rain let up and the sun came up And we were gettin' dry Almost let a pick-up truck nearly pass us by So we jumped right in and the driver grinned And he dropped us up the road We looked at the swim and we jumped right in Not to mention fishing poles Oh, the water Oh, the water Oh, the water Let it run all over me [Chorus] On the way back home we sang a song But our throats were getting dry Then we saw the man from across the road With the sunshine in his eyes Well he lived all alone in his own little home With a great big gallon jar There were bottles too, one for me and you And he said Hey! There you are Oh, the water Oh, the water Oh, the water Get it myself from the mountain stream |

Subject: RE: And it stoned me -- Van Morrison ,,,,,,, From: Will Fly Date: 26 Sep 08 - 06:19 AM I've often thought that the water referred to in the last verse - the water in the "great big gallon jar" - might have been an oblique reference to the "water of life": "uisquebeath" - whiskey. They really would get stoned on that, particularly if it was poteen... |
