Subject: identify this song? From: tradpiper Date: 26 Sep 08 - 06:04 PM I dreamt last night, of my true love. and in my arms, I held her. but when I awoke, I found it not so. she was gone, forever. I went unto, her fathers gate. enquiring for, my darling. he said young man, you've made a mistake. I've none such in my keeping. but then I heard, a voice from above it was my own, true darling. she said my love, I am but yours. but locks and bolts do chain me. So blood was shed, from every side. untill I'd won, her from among them. so come all young men, won't you do like wise. and fight untill you win them... I dreamt last night, of my true love.... I got this from a faded copy of a faded cassette maybe 15yrs ago. I'd love to know who sang and or wrote it, and any light that can be shed on it would be more than welcome. The melody is very distinctive. I'd say it were Irish. |
Subject: RE: identify this song? From: Sorcha Date: 26 Sep 08 - 06:13 PM This is all I found. Sandburg, Carl (ed.) / American Songbag, Harcourt, Sof (1955/1928), p149 (I Dreamt Last Night of My True Love) From: http://www.ibiblio.org/keefer/l09.htm#Locanbo Didn't find any more lyrics or anything. All Google hits led to that page. Bet Joe Offer has this song book! |

Subject: RE: identify this song? - I Dreamed Last Night of my.. From: Joe Offer Date: 26 Sep 08 - 06:36 PM Yeah, Ed - but I can tell from the format at that site that they got the song from our own Digital Tradition. To avoid the confusion of a bifurcated discussion, I'm going to close this thread and post the Sandburg lyrics in the origins thread under the proper title, "Locks and Bolts." Sorcha is right that I have the book - two copies, in fact. I have one I've been meaning to send to Martin Ryan. -Joe- |
