Accurate (or not) as it might be, Alice, I wouldn't take Senator Obama's website as authoritative about his tax plan's savings over Senator McCain's, any more than I'd take McCain's as having the final word about Obama's.

Here is an easier calculator to estimate your taxes under Obama compared to McCain.

The Obama/Biden tax calculator.

Back in the early 80s when the Reagan administration was crowing about their "tax cuts," my take-home pay was suddenly and drastically lowered ~ I began payong more taxes than ever before. Federal income tax may have been slightly decreased for people in my tax bracket, but a significant increase in FICA (social security) more than offeset any advantage.

My expereicen was hardly unusual; it's not like I was especially low- or high-income. For quite a few years through the 70s and 80s, my yearly pay was about equal to the average household income nationwide. So, with the addition of my wife's income (sometimes part-time, sometimes more), we were doing just a little better than average. (The average houehold income in today's dollars is around $45,000.)

I'm absolutely sure that a lot of people were in the same boat as me, but an unbelievably large segment wanted to believe the Reaganite propaganda, and accepted the line that they were being given a tax reduction when in fact they were paying more than ever, while corporations and the highest-income individuals were starting off on the road to total unregulated dominance which has brought us to today's crisis.

Federal taxes aren't the whole picture. What's important is how much you'd have left after Federal, state, and local taxes plus health care premiums (and copays) and other important expenses.

If I paid higher taxes but could have my health care costs covered the way they are in many other countries (Canada, Denmark, Germany, etc.), get tax rebates and/or low-interest loans for weatherizing my house or installing solar panels, get reasonable and affordable student loans, and be able to use high-quality infrastructure such as highways, bridges, public transit systems, public libraries, etc., I'd probably come out a lot better than I do under the current system.   And an important part of the equation is whether the people and corporations at the top are paying their fair share too -- taxes commensurate not only with their incomes but also with their use of things like the transportation systems, federal lands (and forests, rivers, etc.), the courts, etc.

I don't believe for a minute that my "bottom line" or standard of living is better under Reaganomics or its reincarnations under GW Bush or what John McCain proposes.

"I do not see how we can have health reform and tax rebates"

End the war in the mideast (immediately, and that includes the Afghani) ) ... make huge cuts to the military budget ... and you would have enough money to cover health care and yes provide tax rebates.

Not one of the 2 major candidates is proposing that.

I do not see how we can have health reform and tax rebates. I would do what I could for the very lowest income, perhaps raise the deduction you get for dependents, and let everyone keep paying the same taxes if they are middle income. We all seem to manage somehow. I could pay more taxes willingly.

But you can't have less coming in and more going out. That sounds nuts to me. I would immediately be preparing for a transition to some sort of universal health care by taking some of that supposed refund money, or take it from other educational places even, and start offering people from disadvantaged backgrounds, of all ages, and including people in prison right now, free tuition for going into medical fields, and perhaps being just liscened for the public sector and then I would start putting nurses in every little neighborhood church, social service place, storefront that I could. A lot also could be done with very minimally trained people..to check up on people, call to see if they are taking their medications, well baby checks etc., encourage people to get off sugar and transfats and eat more vegetables, etc. A lot of health care does not need an M.D. behind it. mg

What about the businesses? That's the big concern for me.
My company grosses 1.2 million a year, but after operating expenses and then personal property, payroll, income, and (ugh!) sales taxes..I bring home less than 4,000 a month.
If taxes are increased, many business will not be able to handle the additional burden

You know, I've never been much concerned about the amount of personal income tax I pay. I'm much more concerned with what kind of return I get on my investment in our government, and what the priorities for spending are.

If Mike Huckabee was in the race, made it to the Whitehouse, you wouldn't have to pay any income tax.

Virtually equal. We'd pay more under Obama in 3 years and McCain has the lead in year three. No year is more than $65.00 difference.

IF, and its a BIG IF, this thing is accurate, it wouldn't sell me either way.

I tried it and we'd get refunds under Obama, but none under McCain. But, I don't understand the way they did the calculations because they both adjusted our gross income to more than we actually gross! I've never had that happen!
