Where's the volume control? I'm a PC guy just moved to an office with a Mac. It's streaming what sounds like a radio station, all broken up and garbled. How do I get silence on a Mac?

On mine there are volume control keys on the keyboard - louder, softer and mute. Look in the region of the numeric keypad.

Look at the toolbar at the top of the monitor screen. There should be a little speaker icon there. Click on it and pull the volume bar down to modulate the sound. There are also speaker (sound) icons in the top row of keys.

Click the blue apple icon in the top left of the screen

Click "System Preferences"

Click the icon marked "Sound" (a little speaker)

At the bottom of the menu is a slider called "Output Volume" which you can adjust up and down (i.e. left to right), or you can mute the whole thing (so put that sledgehammer away :-)

If you tick the "Show volume in menu bar" box, you'll get a little speaker icon which you can click on to turn the volume up (or off) via the slider, without having to go into System Preferences all the time. I usually keep mine turned all the way down, and just push it up when I want to hear something.

Try F3 F4 and F5.

Or go into System Preferences, and click on Sound.

Or plug a mini jack into the headphone socket

Or disconnect from the internet where, presumably, the radio station is coming from.

Or turn off the transistor radio that is hiding behind the screen.

Tom

Cool Beans:

What model is it? If it is running OSX it should have a speaker slider on the upper right menu bar, as described above, and modern keyboards have keys for controlling the volume up, down or off from the keyboard.

Many years ago, in the early days of Apple Macintosh computers, the basic sound effect when you did anything "wrong" was a simple beep. One Friday afternoon, someone got at a colleague's machine (no security in those days, either!) and replaced the beep with a sound file which produced, in a very smooth, sympathetic voice - "I'm sorry. I can't DO that."!

Monday morning was great fun!

Forgive me from wandering slightly off topic but I can't get my Mac to install the drivers for a new printer I've acquired. I've been through the installation process 4 times and it tells me they've been installed successfully. Then why I try to use the printer I get an error message saying that the drivers AREN'T installed. I'm in despair. Anyone know what to do?

From: M.Ted

Make sure that the drivers are compatible with the version of the Mac OS that you use.

Also, there is often a special set of drivers for Intel/Duo processor-based Macs that will install but not work on units with the old processors(and vice-versa)--make sure that the drivers are right for both your OS and processor--

Other than that, you might just have downloaded a bad installer.

In any of the above cases, you need to de-install or remove the drivers, trash them, and then install the appropriate ones.

Yes, I downloaded the drivers (4 times) for the OS I have.
No, I cannot select the printer in the list because it displays the error message "driver not installed", despite earlier messages which read "installation successful".

And, yes, I have turned the damn computer on and off more often than the light bulb above a whorehouse entrance door.

A quick question Dianne.

What type/model printer is it? What version drivers are you trying to install? What model Mac and OS version? That would help a little in the diagnosis.

Cheers,

Andrez

PS: Just for the record, modern Macs dont use the Chooser any more and havent since OS 9!

On mine (G4 PowerBook), the function keys are the quickest way of adjusting volume.
F3 = mute
F4 = diminish volume
F5 = augment volume

Hello Andrez. I'm relieved and delighted that the cavalry has arrived!
It's a Mac G4 733 MHz Power PC running OSX 10.3.9.
Printer is Epson Stylus C64.
I've downloaded drivers that are supposed to be compatible with these specifications.
I get a message saying that installation was successful.
I drag the icon to the applications folder, restart then send a test to print and try to add this printer to the list.
It then tells me "drivers not installed".

Epson is notorious for this problem; you are not alone. It comes up frequently with their printers and hardly at all with others.

One approach after you do the install would be to run a permissions repair, using Cocktail or some other general fixup utility.

But if this persists, you may want to haul it in to an Apple store and ask the Genius.

Hi Dianne,

I was interested in this issue as I recently had a piece of "disappearing" installed software too. Regrettably for your issue it wasnt printer software.

So trying to help somewhat, I did a quick search too and found that the Epson site isnt all that helpful with driver versions to suit your Mac OS version or the PPC platform. I looked on Apple site and found the following thread in Apples Discussion forum:
Apple Forum .There seems to be a few things to investigate and try out reading through these posts. Those by Ali Brown seem to have promise.

On top of this you might want to consider this tool:
Printer Setup Repair - 4.2.3 PE
It seems to have helped a few Epson users. I know I have found it useful in the past as well. As always though, read the info and make your own decisions about using it. Since it is specific to your version of the OS I dont think you can lose by at least giving it a go.

Let us know if there is anything of use or not in this info. If not I'll be happy to put out a query on the MacFixit Forums and see what else I can turn up.

Cheers,

Andrez

One more thing. There are some Open Source printer drivers (that I have used very successfully before as well) out there for Mac OSX. They may be of interest as they offer support for Epson Printers as well. The link is: Gutenprint 5.0.2 .

Just a final thought before I fall into bed.

Sound problems sorted.

Diane's printer driver sorted.

So I hope I'm not hijacking this thread with another Mac problem (there is a lot of good advice here).

I've downloaded a few files from Sendspace. I save them on the desktop. The contents open OK and transfer into iTunes. But when I try to delete the downloaded file from Desktop, the bloody thing stays there. I can trash the contents, but not the blue folder. Each time, I get the same message:

"Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (Error code -51)."

Does anyone know what this Error message means (or where I can find out), or how to rectify?

I've now got half a dozen empty blue folders on the desktop that I can rename but cannot move them any place other than there, or delete them.

I'm running OS 10.3.9

Thanks

Norman

Norman:

Permissions may have been corrupted. Use Cocktail or some other utility program to repair permissions.

This used to be a problem under the old classic OS but I've not heard of it before under OSX.

Other tricks--change the name. Make sure you have qut any app that might be accessing the folder. Restart if needed.

Thanks Amos. I'll look what's in "Permissions" and see if there's something going on....

I've already changed the name to......"Can't Trash". There's now nothing in any of the folders to access as I've downloaded the MP3s to an iPod, and so taken them off the Mac. I could use these folders for general storage, but they're cluttering up the desktop, and may be a symptom of something else going awry.

I've had this Mac over six years - never any problems on it, so I suppose I've not much to complain about.

If its at a Rangers V Celtic match - no chance

One way to get a Mac to shut up is tell him that the oil belongs to England.

Another one is to put your hand up his Kilt with ice cold hands and grab em.

Seriously if you go to this website and this forum group and post your query (you will need to join) http://forums.techguy.org/69-apple-macintosh/

Very very unusual if they can't solve a problem - it can take time to get a result if it is a complex issue. Worth a try though.

More on this once I've found a connector and power source with the right size and number of pins (grrrrrrr).
May be some time, but if it works, I'll be advertising the Epson to torment someone else.

When you say you downloaded drivers, do you mean the Epson EasyPrint v3.10 driver download from Epson's website?

Quote:

Can you explain this a bit more especially in context with it follows you saying that you see a message saying that "installation was successful". What was installed exactly?
