Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Midnight Special (Delmore Brothers) From: Richie Date: 08 Dec 08 - 11:32 PM Curiously the earliest recording comes from Oklahoma's Pistol Pete Cutrell. Cutrell with a handlebar mustache, one piercing black eye and two prominent front teeth, played guitar and sang. His most requested song was "Midnight Special," a song he kbew for many years. On May 11, 1926 Billy McGinty's Oklahoma Cowboy Band (Otto Gray Director) cut their first record for Okeh in St. Louis. They did an instrumental "Cowboy's Dream" featuring Chief Rebird Sanders on fiddle and "(Pistol Pete's) Midnight Special" with Dave Cutrell on vocal and guitar). Richie |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Midnight Special (Delmore Brothers) From: Barry Finn Date: 08 Dec 08 - 11:21 PM Parchman Farm started as a cotton plantation & stayed that way after it became part of the prison system. It was a prison in name only & was always first & foremost run as a plantation with prisoners who were prisoners in name only & first & foremost treated as actuall slaves. Here's Wikipedia's take on Mississippi's Parchman Farm, past of the state correctional system (not a Jail) but a work farm that's a penitentiary. There was a railroad that did bring prisoners to the prison at one time, don't know if that's still the case. In Allen Lomax's "The Land Where the Blues Began" in chapter 6 titled 'Rise Up, Dead Man' Lomas starts off with a segment heading PARCHMAN & it reads from page 256 to page 283. He (Allen) recorded Midnight Special at Central State Prison Farm in Texas, Lomax also recorded a version from the singing of Frank Jordan & group at Parchman in 1936 & from Gus Harper, Jim Henry & Herman Jackson at Parchman in 1937. He recorded Ledbelly in prison at the Louisiana State penitentiary at Angola in 1935. Bruce Jackson recorded Jesse "Jazz" Hendricks along with Louis "Bacon & Porkchop" Huston, Matt Williams & CB Kimble doing "Midnight Special" in July of 1964 at Ramsey 2, locatedm in Otey, Texas, which incedently was also had it's birth as a plantation.
