Has the Gormless One now commited Political suicide by bringing back a twice sacked ex minister. The Prince of Darkness is back yet again, ready to wreak havoc on his own Party.

How is it possible for a twice disgraced ODD guy like Mandelson to have any kind of influence on a fast sinking Political Party. New Liebour at its very best it would seem.

I have critisized the American system of Politics for having unsatisfactory people in high office. The UK has surpassed it now by rehashing for the third time a third rate Politician of the worst kind.

Mandelson is damaged goods, and Brown just shot himself in the foot. Mandy is seen as sleazy, and sleaze brings governments down.

Maybe the truth is that Gordon Brown is a Scottish Nationalist who has infiltrated to the top of the Labour Party, and is now seizing his chance to ensure that the Scots vote for independence when they get their referendum...

I wasa quite sure that Blair was trying to sabotage Brown's chances of election before he was kicked out; now Brown seems to have achieved that all by himself.
Mr McGrath is correct, the people of Scotland won't look too kindly on "Mandleson's return"

At least this thread is proving that us English aren't completely apathetic about politics - or is it as a lot of the posts are from north of the border?

Our catters across the pond are putting us to shame - a massive amount of posts on the "bailout" thread, some in depth discussion of high finance, really good rants against sleazebags; calls for social revolution, the guillotine!

The events which are unfolding at the moment are momentous in scale.

I think most Brits are more concerned for now on the US situation as they see both the current political and economic dramas there as being more significant than our own side shows.

Let's face it, the US election IS more important right now, especially as Mr Bean may totter on for another two years.

The USA WILL have a new president elect in just over a month now, and that may have more bearing on the future of the UK economy than the stumblings and mumblings of our resident (unelected) political disaster.

America needs to remember one thing:-

If McCain is elected you all need to be VEWY VEWY QUIET! Any sudden unexpected noise could mean "President Palin" will be let loose on the world.

The only politician who can't better George W Bush's command of the English language.

You know, we invented that language, and lent it to you for an indefinite period, but if you keep on electing people who abuse it, we may well ask for its return.

                Actually, I don't think one could call them "US threads." Threads about US topics might work, but anything that happens any place in the world anymore seems to affect everybody else.

I laughed out loud when some commentator on Radio 4 suggested that Brown had brought back Mandelson because he knows that the press hate him. Hence, some of the flak presently directed at Gordon will be aimed at Peter instead!

Mandy was the only authentic genius of the Blair years. Blair never seemed to do so well without him pulling the strings. Mind you - you can't help suspecting that with Blair - Mandelson had a decent product to work with.

Nevertheless, hope springs eternal.

Perhaps England will get another term of Gordon, the man who can talk to chimps - but not people.

Just keep an eye on the loose change.

Hmmm....you can't really admire any of the present crew, but you've got to admit Brown, Blunkett, or Mandelson...they all look more capable than Cameron.

Masterstroke is right, WLD. That Sun headline, unsubtly homophobic as it was, might play well with McG (and perhaps, alas, my pal Akenaton) but it's so much froth. From Brown's perspective, assuming his objective is to secure a fourth Labour term, rehabilitating Mandy is the best chance he's got.

As an electioneering strategist, Mandelson is unsurpassed, and he fought hard and effectively for much needed tariff reform both in Europe and internationally while out of the cabinet. And those who point out that he was twice sacked from the cabinet should have the grace to remember that there was absolutely no justification for the second dismissal, which was purely an act of political expediency by Blair, aided by that sycophantic junior minister Mike O'Brien.

Most interesting in all this, is that it reveals the hand of Alistair Campbell, also rehabilitated and advising Brown despite having once briefed the press that Brown was "psychologically flawed."

Brown's salvation might lie in this readiness to work with his enemies. Certainly he has crushed the Blairite bid to replace him with Miliband. Particularly ironic since Mandelson returned only after being advised by Blair himself to do so.

My personal view, for what it's worth, is that I don't warm to Mandy any more than most of his detractors do. I know that any Labour government will be better than any Tory government (just watch the Tories torpedo the colossal schools-renewal programme and much else if they get in) but on balance I'm hoping to see Labour lose next time. The rationale for that is that they might then at last regroup and come back with some proper Labour policies. It's a gamble, but for me it's a risk worth taking.
