I am looking for the verses of the under-mentioned poem/song.

Sammy was a sailor, a sailor brave and bold,
He shipped aboard a whaler and tumbled overboard,
Someone said go save and someone said go hang,
and all the while that Sammy swam his shipmates sang,
Swim Sam swim Sam swim Sam, show them your some swimmer,
Show them how the white Swan swam Sam,
You Know how the white swan swam.
Six sharp shimmering sharks will try to take your limb
but a well swum swim is a swim well swum
So swim Sam swim Sam swim.
Love to hear from anyone that can help
Keith

My granny used to sing this to me when I was young. Can only remember two verses. Would also like to learn the rest of the song.

Sammy was a sailor, a sailor big and broad,
Shipped aboard a whaler and tumbled overboard,
Sammy shouted "save me", someone shouted "go hang",
And the sharks were sniffling 'round him when his shipmates sang....

Swim Sam, Swim Sam, Swim Sam, show them you're a swimmer,
Swim like the snow white swan swam Sam, you know how the snow white swan
swam,
Snip snap sniveling sharks are going to swipe your limbs,
So swat them swiftly when they swoop and swim Sam, swim Sam swim.

Sammy swam with vigour, the race had just begun,
The sharks all eyed his figure, all jelly shouted one,
One old portly porpoise, popped up in the foam,
Saying do you want to catch the last bus home...

Swim Sam, swim Sam etc....

Please let me know if you find the rest of the song... robeday2@westnet.com.au

This is the version our father [Camden Road London Scouts] taught us:

Sammy was a sailor, a sailor big and bold
Shipped aboard a whaler and tumbled overboard.
He shouted someone save me, but someone said go hang,
The sharks are swimming round you so his shipmates sang:

Oh! Swim Sam swim Sam swim Sam, show them Sam you're a swimmer
Swim like a snow white swan,
Sam you know how a snow white swan swims,
Six sharks shivering sharks, are going to snap your limb,
So a swim well swam is a well swum swim,
So swim Sam swim Sam Swim!

This is a version my mother sang;

Sammy was a sailor,
A sailor boy was he,
He shipped aboard a whaler,
Bound for the Northern sea,
One day a mighty storm came,
Which overboard took he,
And the Captain cried as he went down,
Oh swim, Sam, swim!
There's six big shivering sharks,
Awaiting for your limb,
so with a swim swam swim and a swim swam swim,
Swim, Sam, Swim....

That was one of the favourite songs of John and Cheryl Maughan who used to run the Tree Inn Folk Club in Stratton, Bude. Takes me back, it does! :-)

Sammy was a sailor, a sailer brave and bold, who shipped aboard a whaler and tumbled over board!

Swim Sam! Swim Sam! Swim sam!
Show them you're a swimer!

Six white shimmering sharks are out to get your limbs Sam!

So a swim well swum is a well swum swim so swim, swim, swim, swim, swim, sam!

Joe, in the event we don't, here it is.

SWIM SAM, SWIM

Once I was a sailor, a sailor big and broad.
I shipped aboard a whaler, and tumbled overboard.
I shouted: 'Someone save me! 'Someone said: 'Go hang!
The sharks are sniffing round you.' Then my shipmates sang:

Chorus: 'Swim Sam swim!
Show them you're some swimmer!
Swim just like a swan Sam!
You know how the swan swam.
Six sharp sharks are going to snap your limbs.
So swipe them swiftly when they swoop
And swim Sam swim!'

So I swam with vigour; the race had just begun.
Sharks all eyed my figure; 'All jelly,' shouted one.
Some old portly porpoise popped up in the foam;
Shouted: 'If you want to catch your last train home,

Chorus: Swim Sam swim!
Show them you're some swimmer!
Swim just like a swan Sam!
You know how the swan swam.
Six sharp sharks are going to snap your limbs.
So swipe them swiftly when they swoop
And swim Sam swim!'

Sharks all heard the chorus and said while in the brine,
Ragtime did it for us, but by gum this is fine!'
They fluttered with their esses until they got lockjawed,
So then I left them singing as I climbed on board:

Chorus: Swim Sam swim!
Show them you're some swimmer!
Swim just like a swan Sam!
You know how the swan swam.
Six sharp sharks are going to snap your limbs.
So swipe them swiftly when they swoop
And swim Sam swim!

Chorus: Swim Sam swim Sam swim!
Show them you're some swimmer!
Swim like a snow-white swan Sam!
You know how the swan swam.
Six sharp shivering sharks are going to snap your limbs.
So a well-swum swim is a swim well swum.
