My Dad sang a song about the adventures of a dog (back in 1933). He came from West Virginia. The first verse begins, "When first I saw Bow Ranger running through a hollow log."

I suspect that this might be a version of a song about Reynard the Fox, known variously as "Beau Reynolds", "Berayna", etc. Here is a link to a previous discussion of that song:

It's a great song. I'd be interested to see more of this West Virginia version.
