St Just in Cornwall, UK, has a 14th century charter for a Feast Day on the first Monday in November.   This charter gives the right to a day off work and, after the church service, games and community activities, a village 'Feast' takes place. They are quite common in Cornwall and are always well respected. This year the new Headteacher of the local secondary school decided that going to school is more important than allowing the chartered Feast Day to go ahead and said that all children must go to school instead. Such uproar in the community was caused with the church, mayor and community publicly coming out against her that she has now said school will remain open and it is the parents choice if they want to keep their children off school or not. So, well done to the community for standing up for their traditions.

Churches were always good at banning things, especially things people enjoy.

I hope that the culprit finds herself without staff or pupils that day (exercising their charter rights); although she appears to have accepted that some of the community will be staying away, she still thinks "but they are all wrong except me", and hopes to be vindicated.

Incomers everywhere need a good bit of humility and sensitivity, qualities often sadly lacking among those attaining positions of authority.

It was three (3) years before I began making substantial changes at the Library. I figure that you have to spend that long just to get to know the community even a little bit.

But in this case it wasn't the church that tried to ban it, they are supporting it. It's just a new Head at the school! here's hoping for an empty school.

I can understand wanting to keep the school open and available to parents who may not have the choice to stay home with their kids, but it just seems very complicated to not have church and state separate.

I reckon that, as this charter is originally from the crown, this could be treason, the penalty for which is incarceration in the Tower of London!
