Subject: BS: Old Time Jamming for Obama From: Charley Noble Date: 28 Oct 08 - 07:57 PM Old-time musicians and volunteers jam for Obama in Charlottesville, Virginia, VA. Featuring Darrell Rose, Lydia Martin, Cleek Schrey, Liz Meade, Joe Fallon, Peter Markush, Olivia Johnston, Troy, Maia Stewart-Silver, Josh Stewart-Silver, Mary Stewart-Silver, Ruth Turner, Rob Wolman, Toby Lyon, Samantha, Kathy, and Ted Millich. Here's a link: click here for website I think it's a pretty neat video, and I will note for the record that the young woman banjo player is evidently playing a S.S. Stewart Model 3, vintage 1896, banjo. No wonder McCain doesn't stand a chance is Virginia. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Time Jamming for Obama From: Azizi Date: 28 Oct 08 - 09:05 PM That's a great video, Charley. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. Personally, I could have done without the man poppin' {doing hip hop dance movements} in front of that drummer. Btw, that manner of playing drums has been traced to West Africa. I suppose that the purpose of the video was to promote the candidacy of Barack Obama and show the creativity of the campaign's volunteers. And, imo, those are two very worthy purposes. Still {under other circumstances} it would be nice to see an example of the "traditional" way/s people dance to that tune. Btw, what's the name of that tune and is it a square dance tune? Thanks again! |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Time Jamming for Obama From: CarolC Date: 28 Oct 08 - 09:05 PM Ha! I used to jam with that banjo player, Lydia Martin, in Shepherdstown, WV. Back then she didn't play the banjo though. She's a talented young musician and multi-instrumentalist. |

Subject: RE: BS: Old Time Jamming for Obama From: CarolC Date: 28 Oct 08 - 09:17 PM Here's traditional dancing for that kind of music. It's fun, too... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mR6qc0Jj1tk |

Subject: RE: BS: Old Time Jamming for Obama From: GUEST,BanjoRay Date: 28 Oct 08 - 09:45 PM Azizi - the tune's called John Brown's Dream, which is often sung where they did Yes He Can. It certainly is a square dance tune. It's a big favourite among Old Time musicians and I believe came from the Round Peak area of North Carolina near Mount Airy from great old players like Tommy Jarrel and Fred Cockerham. I thought the body poppin' was great - went well with the tune. The folk process is well at work..... Cheers Ray |

Subject: RE: BS: Old Time Jamming for Obama From: GUEST,DannyC Date: 28 Oct 08 - 10:27 PM Hey CarolC... I know that bearded dancer. He's David P. (P. stands for Sumthin'orother... it's a French sounding name I can't rightly redcall just now). He's from Prospect, Kentucky up near the Ohio River (which is a long way from Pikeville where the YouTube clip was taken). That boy gets around the State and he sure gets around the dancefloor (or dance sandpit or wutever), doesn't he? (He actually gets alot more 'boink' going on when he's on a hard surface.) Speaking of the Ohio... I'm northbound for the I75 bridge tomorrow. I voted this AM for Barack and I'm headed up to Cincinnati for the duration... with my guitar, a half-dozen pair of heavy sox and some lozengers. Gotta win Ohio!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Time Jamming for Obama From: CarolC Date: 28 Oct 08 - 11:53 PM I have to confess that I don't know the bearded dancer. I found that video when I searched Google videos for "clog dancers", but it sure is a small world anyway, innit? ;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Time Jamming for Obama From: Desert Dancer Date: 29 Oct 08 - 12:57 AM A friend (and sometime 'Catter) replied with Irish fiddling for Obama when I sent the old time link to her. :-) ~ Becky in Tucson |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Time Jamming for Obama From: Charley Noble Date: 29 Oct 08 - 09:03 AM I did think about posting this in the music section but then decided it would attract more attention down below where political campaigns are discussed. It's nice to have some local feedback on who the players are, and the name of the tune "John Brown's Dream" certainly fits into the Obama Campaign message. The link was sent to me from my nephew Matt who is doing major website work for the Obama Campaign in Chicago. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
