Subject: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: John J Date: 05 Nov 08 - 05:12 AM There will be a mega sing / music session at the Saracen's Head, Warburton (between Lymm & Partington, Cheshire) on the evening of Saturday 8th November 2008. This is the traditional end of season bash of the Warburton Souling Play. This has always been something of good do to say the least - I'm sure this year will be no different! There is some space for caravans / campervans in the pub car park. The Play is aiming to get to the pub for around 9pm for the last performance, after which there will be music & singing until very late. I was at the pub last night, they have been stocking up on ale for us - they only had a part-barrel left after last year's do. John |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: Gedi Date: 05 Nov 08 - 08:02 AM Hi John, I'll be there - sounds like a real good night. I'd like to catch the performance of the play as I've never seen one before. By the way, it was a good night at Sale last night. The Folk scene in South Manchester is definately picking up! Cheers Ged |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: John J Date: 05 Nov 08 - 08:55 AM Yes it was very enjoyable - especially with Thwaites Original @ £1.90 / pint! Look forward to seeing you on Saturday. Cheers, John |

Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST,Mark Seyler Date: 07 Nov 08 - 05:20 AM As one of the reprobates of the Warburton Soulers,(I must declare my interest!) I can only concur with John's analysis of this event.... From the little I recall of last year's do (the part barrel was not left by me)it was a fun-filled, poetry-packed, musically magnificent bash...... with the serious overtone of the maintenance of a very old Cheshire tradition, the Souling Play, which I consider in the same light as,and to be of the same importance as, the folk music tradition. Come and ENJOY!! Mark |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: Jack Blandiver Date: 07 Nov 08 - 05:23 AM We'll be there, God willing. What about the rest of The Beech crowd? John - do you think anyone would anyone mind if I recorded the play? Non intrusively of course, though in glorious stereo digital clarity... |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST,Laurence Armstrong Date: 07 Nov 08 - 06:47 AM Well I'll remind Mark (the Doctor) about the evening - his playing was enviously good considering we'd been on the go since 1.00pm. Not many dooos these days where one goes into a pub at 1.00pm, wanders out every so ofton to go and perform the play somewhere in the vicinity to finally come back at 9.30(ish) to perform the Play for the last time for the season, have a damn good music & singing session then go home 12 hours later at 1.00am! It's a day (and session) crammed packed full of everthing dear to the heart of any self respecting traditionally inclined person. Can't wait. Laurence The Enterer www.larchfieldhouse.co.uk/Souling |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST,Brain Date: 07 Nov 08 - 07:04 AM The recording sounds interesting, although whether the performers will have digital clarity (that's easy for you to say) is in doubt B. |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST,B Bubb (Jr.) Date: 07 Nov 08 - 07:50 AM Brian, I'm sure that digital clarity refers only to how many fingers are visible to the players at the end of the night. I have to say, that Mark's performance last night was spell-binding! Lets hope the remaining performances are as exciting and well-attended...... |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: John Routledge Date: 07 Nov 08 - 08:49 AM IB - Several Beechers will be there so a good night is guaranteed :0) |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: Les in Chorlton Date: 07 Nov 08 - 11:43 AM Good man yerself, John R. apologies from myself we are going to Big Bernard's Bonfire to burn effigies of Singer-songwriters and followers of Leonard Cohen, wassail, so to speak L in C |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST,Laurence Date: 07 Nov 08 - 11:58 AM I don't think anyone will object to a recording being made. I think we'd even like a copy for our archives please. The only condition would be to please keep it for you own use and out of the public domain - at least for a few years. Laurence The Enterer and keeper of the scrapbook. |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: AlanG Date: 07 Nov 08 - 12:24 PM Several Snuggers will be there too, but I'm afraid I won't be able to make it - baby sitting duty for a grandchildren's sleepover at ours. Ah well, roll on next Wednesday and Songs in the Snug (in the same pub as it happens) |

Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST,Laurence Date: 08 Nov 08 - 06:09 AM Indeed John it is today already - just about got myself settled after last night's enjoyment and organised ready for today. Another day's enjoyment ahead and geting not too far of saturation point - in many respects! Anyone coming to the Sarracen's head tonight will have the privelage of seeing the first outing of our new Enterer's staff - and I'll say it myself it looks magnificant. Can't wait for tonight Laurence - The Enterer |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST,Dave L Date: 08 Nov 08 - 06:13 AM I agree with Ged, the Folk scene in south Manchester is picking up and the Warburton Play is becoming a good regular seasonal event, gets better each year. looking forward to it. |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: Les in Chorlton Date: 08 Nov 08 - 06:17 AM I think it is time for Chorlton Green Morris to plan their Revival. who is up for it? Chiz L in C |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: Phil Edwards Date: 08 Nov 08 - 07:13 AM Funny you should mention that... Pip [can't dance, can't play, can sing a little] PS As for tonight, Warburton will have to do without me one more year - I might have scrounged a lift off someone, but I'm still knackered after last Tuesday night. Next year, hopefully. |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST,Yvonne Date: 08 Nov 08 - 08:11 AM This snugger will be there. Looking forward to it. |

Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: John J Date: 08 Nov 08 - 08:49 PM It's about 01:45 UK time, I've just got home. I think I'm ready for bed as I'm a little tired as it's been a long day. Th day was tremendous, the evening even better! Thanks to all who came and made it such a tremendous success. Again! JJ |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: Jack Blandiver Date: 09 Nov 08 - 04:20 AM After a day of merry shopping & sightseeing in Manchester we sort of fell into a decline whilst taking in the gadgetry of offer in Selfridges in the Trafford Centre - I knew things were getting bad when I almost bought a radio controlled free-flying polystyrene bird for £15, at that was at 6.30pm. Killing time? Time was killing us! Next year we'll set off a bit later, though our lunch-date with Spleen in a glorious cafe in back of the cathedral someplace was straight out of a Saint Etienne song: everyone's dreaming of all they've got to live for, joking around, still digging that sound... Next year most assuredly... |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: Spleen Cringe Date: 09 Nov 08 - 05:27 AM Wish I could have made it to Lymm... prior engagements and all that. The cafe in question was Essy's... steak and kidney pies at a fifth of the price of those in the more bijoux establishments just up the road. A very nice interlude to an otherwise dull working day. Rapunzel - I owe you a fiver for the meal... sorry 'bout that. |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: Rapunzel Date: 09 Nov 08 - 07:44 AM Don't worry about it, Spleen - the main reason I took unilateral action in footing the bill was that the girl behind the counter seemed to be getting irritated with us not ordering in the correct way (I think we were supposed to order the drinks first "I already asked if you wanted tea!" she said in an exasperated tone when 2 cups of tea were requested after ordering everything else). I also don't think she was used to two grown men arguing over the last steak and kidney pie ("no you have it.." "no you have it..."). Add to this the loss of the order number ticket and the endless shouting of "89"... Nevertheless, good food - big portions and small prices A great place - I'll gladly go back to Essy's - but will they have us back? |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: Spleen Cringe Date: 09 Nov 08 - 08:39 AM They loved us really! |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST,Insane Bread Date: 09 Nov 08 - 12:32 PM We loved them, Spleen - that's the important thing! Next time we'll invite Pip along too, and anyone else who fancies a wee micro-mudgatherer in one of the finest eateries in Manchester. |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: Spleen Cringe Date: 09 Nov 08 - 12:53 PM It's a date! |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: Phil Edwards Date: 09 Nov 08 - 02:00 PM Count me in. I've been going to Essy's off and on since before it was Essy's - more on than off recently, since I introduced the rest of the Radish clan to it. And I always order tea last, so I don't know what the problem was with that. |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: GUEST,Laurence Date: 09 Nov 08 - 03:24 PM Well what a day yesterday (and the early hours of Sunday) was. It's always a great end to the day, and the souling season, to go out with a session of music and song. I hope The Unicorn Man from Luton got home safely. Nice to have met you and nice to hear a different selection of songs. Thanks again for coming up here to join in - I hope it lived up to expectations. And finally thanks to all those who came along and joined in on what was a dreadful night weatherwise. We look forward to seeing everyone again - and those that didn't quite make it this time - next year. Laurence - The Enterer |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: John J Date: 09 Nov 08 - 07:19 PM This week is going to feel very quiet - still, I suppose it gives me chance to dry out and for my voice to recover. It's only 51 weeks until we start again! John |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: AlanG Date: 10 Nov 08 - 08:57 AM No chance of a quiet wee John, we've got Sale FC on Tuesday and and Songs in the Snug on Wednesday. With the beer at £1-90 a pint at Sale, and anything left fron Saturday at the Sarries, I don't think there much chance of drying out this week. |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: Phil Edwards Date: 10 Nov 08 - 09:39 AM No chance of a quiet wee John Shame - let the man have a bit of privacy! |

Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: The Unicorn Man Date: 10 Nov 08 - 11:43 AM Cheers Laurence and co. It was a great night, just what I wanted. Woke up at about 8.00am on Sunday and took a slow drive back via service stations and one of my more local sessions, whom I had not seen since Summer so that went well as well. Did'nt have as much yummy ale though as I did on Saturday night. Plus the toll bridge was unmaned, so I got use it for nothing. Mind you I did pay for an all day ticket on the way here, and only used it once, so fair is fair. Hope to see some of you soon. Bedworth maybe? TTFN |
Subject: RE: Sat 8th November, Lymm, Cheshire From: John J Date: 10 Nov 08 - 02:35 PM I'll be at Bedworth - I hope to see you there for a sing, play and a pint. Are you going to the Mudgather? John (Driver of the Horse) |
