Subject: RE: BS: Is the Boogeyman made of snot? From: Amos Date: 12 Nov 08 - 11:03 AM This is really a dumb question. For one thing the bogeyman is imaginary. So he's made out of imagination. All there is to it. For another, etymologically speaking, the bogeyman draws his name from a different root stock than the slang word for nasal mucus, or boogers. So conflating the two is a willful or ignorant act of suppression of Important Truths. The IQ Police are being notified as we speak. Well, not speak, exactly, but you know what I mean... A |

Subject: RE: BS: Is the Boogeyman made of snot? From: Amos Date: 12 Nov 08 - 11:12 AM bogey (1) World War II aviator slang for "unidentified aircraft, presumably hostile," probably ultimately from bogge, a variant of M.E. bugge "a frightening specter" (see bug). This was the presumed source of many dialect words, such as bog/bogge (attested 16c.-17c.), bogeyman (16c.), boggart "specter that haunts a gloomy spot" (c.1570, in Westmoreland, Lancashire, Cheshire, and Yorkshire). The earliest modern form appears to be Scottish bogle "ghost," attested from c.1505 and popularized c.1800 in Eng. literature by Scott, Burns, etc. In British folklore, a boggart (or bogart, bogan, bogle or boggle) is a household spirit which causes things to disappear, milk to sour, and dogs ... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boggart Actually they may have a common root back there amongst the faeries, but, oy, have they reached different addresses!! The IQ police will probably press some lesser charge or other. A |

Subject: Lyr Add: WHAT DO DOGGIES DO WHEN THEY GET BOGIES From: Liz the Squeak Date: 13 Nov 08 - 05:43 AM What do doggies do when they get bogies up their nose? What do doggies do, I'd like to know! Do they sneeze, do they cough, Do they come out when they go 'wuff'? I've never seen a doggie use a handkerchief. Do they rub them off their noses or scratch them with their feet? Or do they rub them off against a tree? Do they splutter, do they wheeze, oh won't someone tell me please!! What do doggies do when they get bogies?! Or something like that. If you want to know, ask John Kirkpatrick LTS |
