Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow since the upgrade? From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 15 Sep 09 - 10:50 PM It is screaming along...as usual...with my configuration.
BLOCK the paypal, and google.analytics, etc...and active X and Java.
Mudcat...is a good-ol' fashioned BBS (text based)...one of the last remaining creatures of its kind....it should stay that way....but someone is always out for an extra buck.
Sincerely,
I find it fun...to drop in from active X (push marketing sites) and then watch the exchange...as the limited bandwidth of the MC is consumed by media and ads attempting to connect from the Big Mogul Guys ... corruption ... that is like a Zombie Attack (great J. Tanner play) |

Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow since the upgrade? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 16 Sep 09 - 12:01 AM Changing browsers didn't help, so I am assuming it's from the source. It has been so long since our chronic Mudcat slowness and crashes that we're all spoiled now. Thanks for all of your work, Max! SRS |

Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow since the upgrade? From: theleveller Date: 16 Sep 09 - 06:08 AM Been running slowly for a few days - it's taking so long to load that I have to leave it and do something else. Getting on to long threads is practically impossible. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow since the upgrade? From: Mooh Date: 16 Sep 09 - 06:35 AM It has been sluggish for me too, but this morning I'm sluggish too. As soon as we synchronize it won't be as obvious. Is it Friday yet? Peace, Mooh. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow since the upgrade? From: jacqui.c Date: 16 Sep 09 - 11:52 AM I'm just opening the threads I want to look at in new tabs on Mozilla. Just like going through the supermarket shelves, pick an interesting one, right click, open in new tab, go on down the list to where I stopped last night and then go through the now opened threads. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow since the upgrade? From: ranger1 Date: 16 Sep 09 - 01:21 PM My guess is that there may be some site maintenance going on. At first I thought it was my computer, SO had downloaded something and I was worried that it might have caused a virus, but then I read a post from Janie somewhere that the 'cat was slow so I stopped worrying. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow since the upgrade? From: VirginiaTam Date: 16 Sep 09 - 01:26 PM I think it is the advertisement applications. That is why Mudcat is blocked at my work. Something in the code that forces the ECC Information Security Policy screen to rear its ugly head when I go to Mudcat since the move to the new server. I just work through lunch and breaks now. But is annoying that it is slow at home, because I only have so much time to devote to Mudcat and I fear I am missing so much. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow since the upgrade? From: Joe Offer Date: 16 Sep 09 - 01:42 PM I can assure you that this time, the problem is Mudcat and not your computer. I'm sure Max will get it fixed when he can. Oh, and Ralphie, take another look at the dates of the messages up top.... -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow since the upgrade? From: jeddy Date: 16 Sep 09 - 02:45 PM i haven't been here for a few days, i get bored very easily. the page loads ok, but i get the top of the page and rest takes awile to load too. glad is isn't just me, i have been messin around with the settings and stuff so thought i had messed up somewhere. janie, i think the further you are from whatever it is that sends the signal, thew slower your connection gets. they really need to invest in small towns and villages, to keep connections good everywhere. take care all, and be patient, someting i have never beengood at. good luck jade x x x x |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow since the upgrade? From: jeddy Date: 16 Sep 09 - 02:47 PM that was second time lucky, i am glad when you press the back button, it saves the message that has just been written. LOL j x x x x x |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow since the upgrade? From: katlaughing Date: 16 Sep 09 - 03:06 PM Now, it still hangs up a long time just at the end of loading AND< once I get to a thread, post and push Send, it takes me to the 503 Service Unavailable page. I hit the refresh button, it asks me if I want it to resend info, I say yes and, after a long wait, it takes me to the thread to which I posted. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow since the upgrade? From: gnu Date: 16 Sep 09 - 03:13 PM I just heard from a buddy... it is running much faster for him today, so it may be improving. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow since the upgrade? From: Richard Bridge Date: 16 Sep 09 - 05:22 PM Less slow to load this thread... |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow since the upgrade? From: SharonA Date: 16 Sep 09 - 07:18 PM Took me three tries to trace a thread just now. Got that "503 Service Unavailable" message the first two times. I have similar problems opening a thread and posting a message. Trying, trying again to do these actions until I "catch" each Mudcat page. Maybe I need better bait? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow since the upgrade? From: Janie Date: 16 Sep 09 - 10:47 PM Very weird. Response is much faster, but still getting "503 error message adiministrator has taken site off-line" frequently (and quickly.) When I either refresh or hit the "back" button, the site is quickly and appropriately responsive. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow since the upgrade? From: Gweltas Date: 16 Sep 09 - 10:47 PM Having similar problems with slow loading and the appearance of the 503 page !! Hopefully Max will sort it soon, as its a right pain in the posterior at present. XX |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow since the upgrade? From: michaelr Date: 17 Sep 09 - 01:24 AM Glacial at the moment. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow since the upgrade? From: Kampervan Date: 17 Sep 09 - 02:52 AM I have to agree with Janie. Lots of '503' messages and sometimes the Forum Home page can take 30 - 40 seconds to load. This feedback is constructively meant. Love the site and I'm sure that Max et al are working hard to sort it. Good luck and thanks to them. Regards K/van |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow since the upgrade? From: artbrooks Date: 17 Sep 09 - 10:22 AM I think Max may be slightly sidetracked...he is back in a town that worships college football. A slow Mudcat is better than no Mudcat - all I need to do to feel better is remember the days of 1200kbpm dial-up connections. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow since the upgrade? From: Soldier boy Date: 17 Sep 09 - 12:04 PM I've had problems for the past 3 or 4 days. Keep getting 503 error message or the site is unavailable and on one occasion I had nearly finished quite a long posting when it suddenly vanished; very frustrating! Today when I clicked on Lyrics and Knowledge it seemed to take ages for all the threads to come up, so if anything, it's got worse. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow since the upgrade? From: Soldier boy Date: 17 Sep 09 - 12:32 PM Could it be anything to do with the "Google Friend Connect" site now appearing at the top of the home page? I am a complete technophobe but just wondered if this is a huge Google site and if so could it be sapping up all yer juice (so to speak). |

Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow since the upgrade? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 17 Sep 09 - 03:05 PM Consumation of actions very slow. I wonder if the Mudcat is overloaded? Removal of all below-the-belt BS before current and two weeks of messages would free a lot of disc space. Removal of these old excretions and archiving them outside of the active Mudcat for future sociologists and psychologists may be helpful. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow since the upgrade? From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 17 Sep 09 - 03:08 PM It appears to me - They have implemented - My once lamented - Suggestion -
THREE and LET It Be !
Sincerely,
A limit of THREE postings within any Mudcat 24 hours. This is the reason Mr. Joe wants consistant sign in names. It will greatly increase the quality of Mudcat - and decrease the whinners.

Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow since the upgrade? From: GUEST,Roj Date: 17 Sep 09 - 03:30 PM Sorry, Max, this is shocking. I've got a 20 Mb/s connection (measured at 19.38) and it's taking minute to get to a thread. What happened? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow since the upgrade? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 17 Sep 09 - 07:16 PM I thought it must be my computer, but I;ve defragmented eveything, and it doesn't happen on other sites. I do hope this clears up soon. It's getting to the stage where I'm starting to use the Mudcat differently. I click on a thread to open a threrad, and while the Cat is getting ready to perform, I pop off to visit some other site in another tab, and come back later. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow? From: glueman Date: 18 Sep 09 - 07:46 AM Connections are timing out on Mudcat but no other sites. Mudcat, we have a problem. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow? From: Max Date: 18 Sep 09 - 08:51 AM My fault. Well, actually it's your fault. Here's how it is. Mudcat is, what, 13 years old now? At last check, we're well over 3 million messages in almost 100,000 threads. Add to that the Digitrad, PMs, links, etc and so on, and essentially, we're bloated. That's not a real problem normally. But in reaction to the super search not functioning properly and another weird issue involving the file size of all this data, it takes a LOOOOONG time to do things, even with fast computers and big bandwidth. So every time I try to solve a problem, make an adjustment or improvement, this kind of thing happens. Some sites would just go offline for a spell, but frankly, I'm scared that mudcatters will start showing up at my door. And since I now live in the woods, I keep a shotgun by the door and expect only the postman, the UPS man and the Fedex Lady. Anyone else definitely at least gets aimed at. Also, other sites have the luxury of downtimes such as 3am EST because their users are asleep. Due to the global nature of mudcat, there is no downtime. As one group lays down, another is burning the toast. Make sense? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat slow? From: Leadfingers Date: 18 Sep 09 - 09:09 AM Thanks for that bit of info Max ! I at least realise that you DO have a life outside of Mudcat , and am grateful for the friensdship I have found through the site . Keep up the good work sir ! |
