Subject: Lyr Add: BEAUTIFUL CITY OF SLIGO (Graves, Stanford From: Jim Dixon Date: 16 Nov 08 - 04:44 PM Not the one you wanted, but interesting nonetheless: From Songs of Erin by Charles Villiers Stanford and Alfred Perceval Graves. London: Boosey & Co., 1901. [The link takes you to the lyrics. Sheet music is on the following pages.] THE BEAUTIFUL CITY OF SLIGO Words, Alfred Perceval Graves. Music, Charles Villiers Stanford. 1. We may tramp the earth for all that we're worth, But what odds where you and I go? We shall never meet a spot so sweet As the beautiful City of Sligo. CHORUS: Oh, sure she's a Queen in purple and green, As she shimmers and glimmers her gardens between; And away to Lough Lene the like isn't seen Of her river a-quiver with shadow and sheen, The beautiful City of Sligo. 2. Though bustle and noise are some folks' joys, Your London just gives me ver-ti-go; You can hear yourself talk when out you walk Thro' the beautiful City of Sligo. 3. As an artist in stones a genius was Jones, Whom so queerly they christened In-i-go, But he hadn't the skill to carve a Grass Hill For the beautiful City of Sligo. 4. Then for powder and puff and cosmetical stuff, Dear girls, to Dame Fashion, ah! why go? When Dame Nature supplies for tresses and eyes Such superior dyes down in Sligo. [Sung in operatic style by Anne Murray on "Last Rose of Summer: Songs of Ireland," Hyperion CD 66627, 1994.] |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Beautiful Sligo From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 16 Nov 08 - 05:20 PM Unless you live, for example, in the country where the authors were born or the country where the book was published; in which case Google doesn't think you ought to be allowed to see it. The very same copy, however, is available without such petty restrictions at the Internet Archive: http://www.archive.org/details/songserinacolle00gravgoog |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Beautiful Sligo From: quokka Date: 17 Nov 08 - 06:41 AM Unfortunately Dad doesn't recognise the verse you quoted, Frank. Are there any more verses, or clues as to where the song came from? Dad's a wealth of knowledge on Sligo songs so it surprised me that he didn't know it. He's going through his books, though, so if anything turns up I'll let you know. Cheers, Quokka |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Beautiful Sligo From: Silas Date: 17 Nov 08 - 08:59 AM The song prattles on about the 'City' - its a dump. I was really looking forward to going there a couple of years ago - jeeze, what a dissapointment. Nearly as bad as Dingle has become. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Beautiful Sligo From: Silas Date: 17 Nov 08 - 10:30 AM Hi Frank Can't you get your town counsil to do somethng about the horrendous traffic congestion, the dirty streets and the horrible new buildings that are going up? You can just about see from the wreckage how nice the place used to be - is it all too late? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Beautiful Sligo From: GUEST,Big Tim Date: 18 Nov 08 - 07:02 AM Sligo 'city' (town is probably more accutate) is of course where Mary O'Hara was born (in 1935). I've been there recently and wouldn't pick it out for criticism above most others towns in Ireland (or the UK). If anyone has a solution for traffic congestion, they will quickly become very rich and famous. |
