Thanks to David Flower (UK) for the original posting of this:

"Filmmaker Mark Johnson traveled around the globe getting street musicians and others to record parts of the tracks for the song "Stand By Me".

Using battery powered equipment and a pocket full of frequent flyer miles he got tracks from dozens of performers. Each was able to wear headphones to hear what the other performers had done before them. Nicely done!

and quite beautiful . . ."

Here's a tv interview with the film maker talking about the project
Peace Through Music
And here's a similar song, an international version of Marley's One Love featuring Manu Chao.

Really inspiring music.

Please pass it on!

I was all set to start a new thread after I saw the segment about "Playing for Change" on Bill Moyers' show last night, but fortunately I remembered to look for an existing thread.

First there was Review: Playing for Change – DVD started by dwditty on 22-Feb-08.

Then this one: Playing for Change: Peace Thru Music started by Stilly River Sage on 24-Oct-08.

Then the one we're in now...but I had missed all three.

Anyway, I found the video of STAND BY ME extraordinarily moving.

Try this link to YouTube. I think this version is better than the one linked by Norman above, which seems to miss a few seconds at the beginning.

Or see it at the "Playing for Change" web site: Click—but the YouTube copy downloaded much faster for me.

Thanks for starting this thread, NormanD.

Somehow I missed the previous "Playing For Change" threads. Hopefully, one of these threads will be kept going so more Mudcat members & guests will become aware of this great concept and the awesome musical performances that are preserved for the present & the future by the producers of this DVD.

Here's the summary from that the poster added about this video clip:

"Playing for Change is a musical journey of discovery that celebrates the freedom and lives of street musicians in America today. Focusing on the three cities of Los Angeles, New Orleans, and New York, Playing for Change captures an array of musical styles and human moments that would otherwise slip through the cracks of society. Well it did a long time ago, with a few hundred cover versions racked up already. But the onward march of technology is opening up new possibilities....
