Subject: BS: Ha! I finally did it. From: Little Hawk Date: 02 Dec 08 - 11:56 AM Well, I have finally achieved what I had come to think was not achievable on this forum. I started a new thread and it didn't get posted to by anyone but me. I posted to it twice. It finally fell off the bottom of the board and is no longer visible. The amazing thing is, I started that thread in all seriousness because I thought the subject would interest a number of people here. It was a music thread. I went to a lot of trouble to provide information and documentation on it too. I must've spent a good 3/4 of an hour preparing that thread. Nobody else posted to it. Nada. So, I have finally done it...I have launched a thread that died without reaction or comment from anyone! Break out the champagne!!!! I didn't think it was possible. But it is. Another great milestone has been reached in the history of mankind. ;-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Ha! I finally did it. From: Rapparee Date: 02 Dec 08 - 12:03 PM LH, I hate to break this news to you, but very few here care about the folkloric implications of the polyphonic accordion quintets of the natives of Tonga. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ha! I finally did it. From: MMario Date: 02 Dec 08 - 12:20 PM It's a very informative post - but there isn't much to do or say about it. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ha! I finally did it. From: VirginiaTam Date: 02 Dec 08 - 12:22 PM I didn't want to mess up your acheivement LH, so I'll post here. Stonewall Jackson is my 5th or 6th great uncle, on my mom's side. Bought my honey Gods and Generals dvd for Christmas this year. Got him book last year. For an Englishman he sure is into American Civil War. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ha! I finally did it. From: Little Hawk Date: 02 Dec 08 - 12:31 PM Hey, Tam, that's cool. ;-) I love Stonewall Jackson. Still haven't read the book, but I plan to. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ha! I finally did it. From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Dec 08 - 12:43 PM But gee, to honor Little Hawk, we ought to have a link to it: |

Subject: RE: BS: Ha! I finally did it. From: wysiwyg Date: 02 Dec 08 - 12:46 PM This is not at all uncommon with music threads. When they get interesting is when someone looks up that song to see if just maybe Mudcat has it, and bingo! There it is, with the wonderfully resourceful info; the discussion then continues from that point. So LH, just think of it as a bank deposit-- the interest takes time to accrue. ~S~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Ha! I finally did it. From: Bill D Date: 02 Dec 08 - 01:52 PM It don't count iff'n you start it on a weekend. Traffic drops WAY off starting Friday afternoon. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ha! I finally did it. From: Rapparee Date: 02 Dec 08 - 06:28 PM It also doesn't count if it started in Ontario. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ha! I finally did it. From: Ebbie Date: 02 Dec 08 - 06:35 PM Besides, I think Little Hawk cheated - didn't this come out during the time the Mudcat was mostly unavailable? 'Fess up, Hawk. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ha! I finally did it. From: Jim Dixon Date: 02 Dec 08 - 07:15 PM You're far from being the first, not in the music section anyway. I count about 30 threads in the last 2 weeks that got no response to the first message. I'm sure I've started several threads myself that got no response. Here are some examples: Lyr Add: Sale of Stationery Ware...(Gavin Turnbull Lyr Add: Wanted (Perry Como; Homer & Jethro) Lyr Add: On a Slow Boat to China (and parody) Lyr Add: In The Church of the Holy Undecided It doesn't bother me, though; those lyrics will be there for someone to discover for a long time to come (I hope). I once commented that there is no subject so boring or stupid but that someone will reply to it, but I only meant that to apply to the BS section. Anyway, someone proved me wrong within a week or so. Indeed, threads that get no response are much rarer in the BS section. I count only 7 in the last 90 days. Their titles were: BS: Phara Snail to pose nude BS: Oy, McCainia! BS: New stock market terms BS: Air Canada flights for B.C. music camp BS: Google public transit BS: Regarding debate in general BS: Green Economics |

Subject: RE: BS: Ha! I finally did it. From: quokka Date: 02 Dec 08 - 07:46 PM Someone has got WAY too much time on their hands! And I thought I wasted time on Mudcat! I got nothin' on you guys...hats off ;-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Ha! I finally did it. From: JohnInKansas Date: 02 Dec 08 - 07:50 PM Although commendations and congratulations may be in order for LH, I do believe that my own record of making the last post in otherwise healthy and active threads quite likely is unbeatable. As soon as Max releases the archive DVD of all of the mudcat threads, I intend to do a complete search to compile an accurate record. I have the new Vista (see paragraph 6 and following) with its immense search capabilities, so finding the threads I've killed will be easy. Until then, I'll proceed in the standard BS tradition of "I know that what I believe must be the whole and absolute truth." John |

Subject: RE: BS: Ha! I finally did it. From: Rapparee Date: 02 Dec 08 - 09:49 PM JiK, I quite agree: what I know and believe must BE the whole and absolute truth. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ha! I finally did it. From: Stilly River Sage Date: 02 Dec 08 - 11:55 PM I started one on Nov. 7 that I was sure would get a few responses. It was for the wonderful writer and critic John Leonard. I was surprised no one else posted, I'm sure he must have a few fans here at Mudcat from over the years. SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Ha! I finally did it. From: Stilly River Sage Date: 03 Dec 08 - 12:51 AM You would probably recognize his voice from his television and radio work. NY Magazine link--he worked for them as one of his jobs, but was on CBS Sunday Morning and NPR's Fresh Air for many years. SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Ha! I finally did it. From: Little Hawk Date: 03 Dec 08 - 12:55 AM Oh, okay. If he was Canadian, I'd know about him for sure, I guess. But I missed out on Mr Leonard. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ha! I finally did it. From: Gurney Date: 03 Dec 08 - 01:07 AM JohniK, it may be that you have the last word because you leave everyone with nothing that they can add. Then again, it may be that you sound angry, and no-one wants to piss you off in case they get a computer problem! That's tongue-in-cheek, John! Honest. I've ended a few myself. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Ha! I finally did it. From: Genie Date: 03 Dec 08 - 01:53 AM You're definitely not alone, Hawk. Done that several times myself. Especially when the topic's just giving info, e.g., song lyrics, and there's no question stated or implied. It doesn't make you a bad person. I hope. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Ha! I finally did it. From: Little Hawk Date: 03 Dec 08 - 02:01 AM Not at all. ;-) The point is, I've deliberately tried to do it several times...and have always failed. Now I didn't try to do it, and I succeeded. Isn't that just typical? |

Subject: RE: BS: Ha! I finally did it. From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 03 Dec 08 - 11:16 AM It's quite easy to start a thread which produces no meaningful response. Simply post something which requires that somebody actually sing something or pick up an instrument. It's amazing, the lack of interest... |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Ha! I finally did it. From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 03 Dec 08 - 02:40 PM Timing is everything. All it takes is for the Cat to go down for a few days immediately after you have posted the new thread... |

Subject: RE: BS: Ha! I finally did it. From: Little Hawk Date: 03 Dec 08 - 04:05 PM I guess. And here I was thinking it was the folk snobs turning their noses up at Dylan! I should not have judged them so harshly. |
