Subject: BS: tootsie pop From: bald headed step child Date: 07 Jan 09 - 04:33 AM I've been searching for the answer for years. How many licks does it take to get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop? Anyone else doing research in this area? |

Subject: RE: BS: tootsie pop From: GUEST,LTS pretending to work Date: 07 Jan 09 - 09:39 AM Er... what's a tootsie pop? The only Tootsie I'm aware of is the character played by Dustin Hoffman (now there was an unconvincing drag act....) and the thought of licking it just leaves me shuddering... LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: tootsie pop From: PoppaGator Date: 07 Jan 09 - 10:00 AM I've never had the patience to find out ~ like Susan said, "one crunch"! Is the Tootsie Roll Pop available only in the New World? I would think that Liz would be familiar with any chocolate (or part-chocolate) product, were it only available in her corner of the world... |

Subject: RE: BS: tootsie pop From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 07 Jan 09 - 10:32 AM Thank you WYSIWYG, 1 crunch is the only correct answer. The advantage to the cruncher is the he (it's almost never a girl) gets to have every flavor of Tootsie Pop in less time than the licker gets only one. |
Subject: RE: BS: tootsie pop From: katlaughing Date: 07 Jan 09 - 10:51 AM Oh, that IS a challenge is I ever heard one! Okay, gals, how many of US crunch! Hold yer hands up! Me, me, me!!**BG** |
Subject: RE: BS: tootsie pop From: wysiwyg Date: 07 Jan 09 - 10:56 AM "Girls don't crunch" is just an old myth (like several others, LOL). Maybe they didn't when you MudMen were boys, in FRONT of boys, but believe me, we do crunch! Make mine purple. Or orange. ~CrunchyGirl |
Subject: RE: BS: tootsie pop From: Alice Date: 07 Jan 09 - 11:30 AM Girls definitely crunch. There is really no other way to eat a tootsie pop than to crunch it! NO ONE has the patience to just lick it. |
Subject: RE: BS: tootsie pop From: Liz the Squeak Date: 07 Jan 09 - 12:06 PM Ah, it's a lollipop. Boiled sugar on a stick. Does it have a squidgy centre? Ours tend not to. Limpit licks but only for so long. After about 200 she gives up and crunches it. I can't remember the last time I had a lollipop. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: tootsie pop From: wysiwyg Date: 07 Jan 09 - 12:13 PM Liz, d'ya have Tootsie Rolls? A chocolatey, chewy log with sections scored to bite off a bite at a time. Regulars or mini's. Regular ones are thumb-diameter, mini's are a bit more than pencil diameter. The Pops are a Tootsie Roll (reg) ball in the center of a hard-candy ball, on a stick. The center is about 3/4 inch, the whole Pop is a little over an inch. USers will have to send some with Jacqui I guess. Or a whole new Santa approach-- candies across the pond. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: BS: tootsie pop From: Wesley S Date: 07 Jan 09 - 12:27 PM With my teeth - crunching is a thing of the past {ice chewing too}. I've just had two new crowns installed in my mouth last Friday. They cost too much to risk the temporary pleasures of crunching. That's for the young bucks and buckettes. At my age I'll lick until the pop is finished thankyou very much. I may be too old to cut the mustard but I can still lick the jar. |
Subject: RE: BS: tootsie pop From: Midchuck Date: 07 Jan 09 - 12:43 PM It's sort of like Russian Roulette. You have to guess how many licks you need to take to get the shell down to where you can crunch without breaking a tooth. I've been lucky so far. Peter |
Subject: RE: BS: tootsie pop From: bald headed step child Date: 07 Jan 09 - 12:58 PM Thank you all for your input. I knew it couldn't be 3 like the owl said. Nobody has teeth that strong. I am surprised at the number of women saying they lick. My observation has been that they all crunch. Maybe they just get flustered by being observed? BHSC |
Subject: RE: BS: tootsie pop From: Rapparee Date: 07 Jan 09 - 12:58 PM Tootsies for Britain! |
Subject: RE: BS: tootsie pop From: bald headed step child Date: 07 Jan 09 - 01:14 PM I guess we'll have to figure out a way to get some over to you guys. I should think that would qualify as humanitarian aid or something like that. No one should be deprived of tootsie pops or rolls. They even have them in Iraq. I know cuz my ex sent a bunch over to her cousin when he was there. He said the kids there loved them. You'd think we could treat our allies better than that. I'll call the President and have him get right on it, as soon as we get one sworn in. BHSC |
Subject: RE: BS: tootsie pop From: bald headed step child Date: 07 Jan 09 - 08:21 PM But seriously folks, if you Brits want to PM me your address, I might be able to get you some. I don't have enough money to send all of you individually, but maybe enough to be distributed amongst the group. BHSC |
Subject: RE: BS: tootsie pop From: Alice Date: 07 Jan 09 - 10:36 PM By the way, You Tube has a lot of videos of the old tv commercials, "How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop?" the "Mr Owl" an older version |
Subject: RE: BS: tootsie pop From: Melissa Date: 07 Jan 09 - 10:39 PM I saw a thing where a batch of university students created a Mechanical Licker so they could get an accurate answer to how many. If I had known the trivial tidbit would come in handy later, I would have made a point to remember the number! |
Subject: RE: BS: tootsie pop From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 07 Jan 09 - 10:48 PM Our tax dollars at work in research! This is probably one of the more practical projects for the commonweal. |
Subject: RE: BS: tootsie pop From: Alice Date: 07 Jan 09 - 11:03 PM From Wikipedia "Three independent research studies have been carried out to determine the answer. Engineering students at Purdue University devised a "licking machine" that showed an average of 364 licks are needed to get to the center. Using 20 human volunteers, the figure was 252. A doctoral student at the University of Michigan created another licking machine and came up with an average of 411 licks." Subject: RE: BS: tootsie pop From: catspaw49 Date: 07 Jan 09 - 11:20 PM Obviously the variables were incorrectly factored as the correct answer is stated in the second post-----481 licks. Spaw |
