Russia stops all gas supply to Europe via Ukraine

KIEV, Ukraine – Russia has shut off all its gas supplies to Europe through Ukraine — the latest move in a pricing dispute that has reduced or halted fuel deliveries to a dozen countries during a winter cold snap.

Russia's gas monopoly Gazprom, which had sharply limited supplies through Ukraine on Tuesday, has stopped all gas shipments through the country as of 7:44 a.m. (0544 GMT), said Valentyn Zemlyansky, spokesman for Ukraine's Naftogaz.

About 80 percent of Russian gas to Europe is shipped via Ukraine. Other smaller pipelines run through Belarus and Turkey.

"It was the Russian side's decision to stop all gas deliveries to Europe" through Ukraine, Naftogaz head Oleh Dubina told reporters. "I think it is inappropriate."

On the Irish news this morning they mentioned that Hungary has had to shut down all gas use except "essential industrial requirements" (or some such phrase). That's a lot of homes with no heating in the dead of a Hungarian winter. I don't think it's had any direct effect here, but it sure doesn't sound good.

Russian is punishing Ukraine: According to The Irish Times

"Ukraine failed to pay 600 million dollars (€430 million) in penalties for late payment of its gas bill."

Apparently, that "overdue gas bill" includes the cost of the gas to run the pumping stations inside Ukraine that push the gas through the country to the other side.

Untrue, you do need guns. To steal those things that others happen to have, upon which you have allowed yourself to become dependent. Of course if you don't want to use guns. Use drugs instead.

Russia us currently trying to buy the gas pipeline that winds through Africa and ends in Italy. If they are successful they will have cornered the market on natural gas supplies for virtually all of Europe.

Europe needs to get going on Liquified Natural Gas alternatives to help defend itself from predatory practices by Russia or they will freeze.

Didn't one of the fairly recent James Bond movies have a storyline similar to this?

I expect Mr. Putin watched it and thought.."Aha!"
