Have any of you ever been hit by a car? The imprint of his ass is still in my windshield... but everyone is OK (well, not the car, but all the humans and I think the hedge will recover nicely too...)- or hit someone? |

If they get such a fright they end up sitting on your bonnet you score 25 points. 4. Actually hitting the participants either with your car or afterwards when they swear at you is not allowed and causes a deduction of 25 points. 6. Extra points may be gained during the folk festival as follows 25 - if they are carrying any instrument 50 - if its another flamin guitar an extra 25 can be gained if it is a Martin (the guitar that is not the player) 75 - if its a melodeon especially if all they can play is dirly dirlyies but you score a massive 100 points if they are carrying either a bodhran(Exception is if it is a Belgarth we dont like damaging local products) or a banjo. but if you think they are good you get a 1000 point bonus if they are carrying a harp(Unless of course its Mark shiner who makes Selkie Harps again local interst) Seriously though we once had a child run into us while we were doing 15 mph past an Icecream van. She ran right into the front passenger door and bounced of. All the witnesses said there was nothing anyone could do and although she screamed a lot the ambulance men said they didnt think she was more than bruised though that was the third time that month they had had to deal with her. Cleary he thought I should and would move aside. I didn't, so he roared up along the shoulder/margin, swerved in front and slammed on the breaks, HARD. Classic road rage tactic, with one significant exception: He was on a motorcycle, and I was in a truck. It still sends shivers up my spine. I don't know how long he will live. |

I didn't see it, but those who did told me she was tossed over the hood of the car and just missed hitting her head on a fire hydrant. When I got there the imbecile emergency crew were trying to get her to pull her arm out of her sweatshirt and blouse, the arm that was attached to the broken clavicle. I had to tell them to cut her clothes off so they could stabilise the break. Idjits! She was very sore, bruised, and scared/relieved, as was I. We didn't get a zillion out of the driver's insurance company, but there was enough to pay for medical and a new bike. |

I have never hit anyone (yet, touch wood, thank the deities, etc) but I've driven past so many idiots in the street clamped to mobile phones or using babies in prams and pushchairs as a crossing aid that I've often wanted to just nudge the car towards them and see how close I can get.... He was drunk but not that drunk that he didny ken the trouble he was in but instead of phoning for help he lifted my brothers bike(When the police checked all lights were working, he was also wearing hi vis gear) he carried about 100 yds along the road and propped it against the parapett of the bridge so it would look like a man had got caught short and nipped down the embankment. However if you have ever seen Stromness you will know on the old street it would be virtually impossible to go fast enough to even hit a hedgehog:) |

A young man on a monkey bike about 18 inches high suddenly shot directly across the road in front of me, followed by another on a slightly bigger one. Fortunately I slammed on the brakes in time. The car behind gave me what I took to be a hostile honk - I don't think he'd have even seen the bikes. I wish the speed limit round our way was 15 miles an hour... |

He was a year or two older, just ready to graduate from high school. He was riding his bike across a highway and accidentally hit a car. He didn't die from that, but rather from pneumonia in hospital, which was a shock as the docs thought he would live. He was the sibling my mom was closest to; she had a breakdown and was sent to live with an older brother and his wife for about a year. Thank goodness they were very kind people and took good care of her. I've always admired her for the courage it took to let her own kids ride bikes. She never was overly-cautioning or restrictive with us. I think she was very brave. She had his autograph book from school and a few other of his things, kept away in a trunk and, I think, found it difficult to talk about him. It just hurt for so long; it was such a shock. |

I had a rather difficult intersection to traverse so I got off the bike and was walking it across the pedestrian crossing when a car came up on the left of another that had stopped for me and clobbered the bike (which I'd been pushing by the saddle), knocking both it and me to the ground. This is Oz, so the miscreant was illegal on two counts; overtaking a car (that wasn't turning) on the left and overtaking a car stopped at a pedestrian crossing. The bike was 'a bit historic' but I was OK and more worried about whether I'd spilled any oranges; I hadn't. The miscreant's lawyer, in trying to avoid the rather piddling cost of repairing the bike (which I'd built out of bits I'd recovered from the local tip) tried to argue that I had been riding on the pedestrian crossing (and thus was not a pedestrian) and also that I had strayed out of the markings (and was thus not actually on the crossing). As it turned out, a colleague of my father (unknown to me) had witnessed it all and corroborated my story; he also commented that I'd turned the air blue with my language, but I had no recollection of such matters. Ever since, I've been very aware of legal technicalities as applied to things we all take for granted. And a couple of events much later in life allow me to sing the praises of Aerolyte instrument cases. Near Paddy's Market in Sydney I was crossing at the lights when a car tried to ignore the rule giving pedestrians "Right of Way"; such people seem to regard kneecaps as softer than their duco and thus of little consequence. He found out that an Aerolyte concer case, which just happened to be between my kneecaps and his car, was quite a lot tougher than his headlight. A few years later I was walking across a controlled intersection (ie traffic lights) in Melbourne when a clown (with NSW numberplates) steamed through against a red light; the concer case disintegrated his wing mirror. For a number of years, it was sort of a ritual; buy a new car, wait a few weeks, some careless kid on a bike runs into it and dents a door. Fortunately, none of the riders were hurt. |

As an aggregate, I'm sure it evens out.(though more women will be the ones doing the nails) My most recent fav was the trio of older teen kids intentionally speeding out into traffic on bikes, wearing black, into a dark area at night of a major road, and laughing about the reactions. In my case. I barely saw them in time. They were very pleased.

I was waiting at a crossing watching a woman in her car holding her mobile phone to one ear, playing with her hair with the other hand whilst the car she was driving was moving forwards.... (how many people have you seen steering with their third hand?!) I said, in my usual dulcet tones 'Get off the phone you stupid tw*t' which I gather she heard, because she grabbed the wheel, dropped the phone and stuck her tongue out at me, all whilst continuing through the busy junction! It's people like that that make me want to own an SUV or a Hummer... just so I can park on them. LTS |

I was on my bike when I was knocked down by this idiot I was going round a bend in the road when he started to pass me and just kept coming in closer and closer and then he knocked me off my bike, why don't driver use their mirrors. but then you'll get the people that blame cyclists, or people that walk along the pavement/sidewalk for do all these things you know it's never their fault. Drivers in vehicals are terrible but so are these folk with mobile phones/ipods or with buggys/prams are terrible as well. |

No one was hurt and the police were incredibly embarrassed particularly as the shifts were changing and all their mates kept strolling by to snicker at them. There I was waiting to cross the road, on the footpath, at a crossing. There she was trying to come around said corner creeping across the crossing, looking fixedly to her right for on-coming traffic so she could (legally & properly) edge out. Seeing a gap, on she came, slowly & properly, & I hit her car wiv me brolly to get her attention, & said politely "This is a pedestrian crossing, you need to look both ways" & walked past th front of her car, across the crossing. When I got to the other side after passing 4 waiting lines of traffic, I heard a car horn & looked back to see her frozen in the spot where I left her! I reckon I scared 10 years off her life & she would NEVER approach a crossing or any corner without looking left right left right left right left right ... like a spectator at a tennis match. sandra (1 point for the pedestrians!) |

Two nights later, I was taking my girlfriend to a folkclub when the car in front stopped, the passenger jumped out, and he ran around the car and into my path, bouncing off the bonnet with both hands. With a 'Sorry, mate. My fault!" he was on his way. He was fine, but I wasn't. I sat there shaking. Never hit anyone before or in the thirty years since, but the memory is fresh. |
