I should have said that MU Membership HAS to be held by ALL band members , as does Equity !

What you need for a band is affiliate membership of the EFDSS as a band. It has the advantage of covering all members and caller regardless of the make-up of the band, as long as it's performing under the name registered for EFDSS membership. Individual names are not required, other than (naturally) for the person who makes the application.

Being an individual member of EFDSS DOES NOT cover the band, and neither does MU membership (which you can only have per person, not per band)

MU membership is well worth having additionally for other reasons - for a start it covers you performing outside of your band; you get legal assistance when you need it and you are supporting an organisation that campaigns on behalf of all musicians wherever their living is threated by issues such as licensing restrictions.

folkiedave was, methinks, thinking of Musicians Insurance, www.musiciansinsurance.co.uk - PLI for 65UKP. Also good rates on instrument cover including theft from unattended vehicles.

While (as a member myself) I certainly wouldn't advise anyone against joining EFDSS, check that their insurance covers your situation if that's why you're joining - I looked at the Ts&Cs and am not convinced that being an individual member covers a band of which you are part, so you may need to go for group membership.

Of course if anyone can convince me that it does I'd be very grateful as that would be 65UKP saved from the band's meagre finances every year!

EFDSS cover is for events of up to 200 people: it's arranged through Musicians Insurance Services who also insure ceilidh bands in their own right.
A friend of mine went that way and has found it works well - they classify folk bands differently to rock and other genres.

They have a website, I believe.

Membership of the MU also gives you public liability insurance up to £10,000,00 (as well as free cover on musical instruments)

Check carefully the EFDSS insurance - it is limited as far as crowd size is concerned. I use a firm in Matlock Derbyshire(and now I have been forced to look for it - I can't fine it - must rush!!)

Thanks for the replies; I'll investigate EFDSS membership. Will; you should see the pictures with (fake) weapons! We had some feedback from a lady in West Virginia, who saw our photo on the web; she described us as 'surly and burly'!!

The ceilidh band I play in is a member of the EFDSS and we are covered as Diane says. You have reminded me, though, that we ought to update the PAT certificates for our electrical gear.

Hi all; The band I play with (see here) is playing a Barn Dance next month at a large 'chain' hotel. We have been asked to show equipment test certificates (no problem, we have a tame electrician) and proof of insurance. I'm assuming the hotel means public liability insurance, and we've been thinking about that but haven't organised it yet. Now is the time, and I was wondering if any UK catters have found a good, reliable and inexpensive source for this kind of insurance?
