I learned today that Davy Steele's song was based on interviews of ploughman Will West of Perthshire by his nephew Gary West.

Here's Gary West's performance of the song.

Hi folks, I just happened to come across this website whilst doing a wee search for my Uncle Davy. Glad you all seemed to enjoy his songs. His voice still sends shivers up my spine to this day, and the memories it conjours up; I'll hold close to me for the rest of my life.

Can you imagine how he sounded live!!! Phenominal!!!!

Thanks for all your kind words.

There's a lot more of his work I think you'd enjoy both with the Battlefield Band and also as a solo artist.

Kind regards,

William Steele

Hey Backwoodsman,
The irony in your remarks is that I've recorded 'Norland Wind' too. As did Gibb Todd who also happened to recorded Last Trip Home.

I'd read the lyrics before, but I think the first time I heard it was from Dave Webber, and it came with the HotBomN stuff.

I LOVE the fact that the song in the DT links to an Amazon MP3 search and you can buy/listen to 5 different recordings of the song including Battlefield Band's.

Davy came with Patsy on a Poozies gig at a village hall close to where I live, not long after he was diagnosed and just before the release of 'Friday Harbour', and although he clearly wasn't in great health, he got up (having been introduced without fanfare, simply as 'Patsy's husband, Davy') and sang 'The Last Trip Home' during The Poozies' second set.

It was the first time I'd heard the song, and with Patsy's and Mary's harps, Eilidh's fiddle and Karen's accordion, it was a masterful peformance. Hairs on the back of the neck stuff.

A fine song from a fine singer/writer/player. Very sadly missed.
RIP Davy.

PS: The tune which goes with it on 'Friday Harbour' is 'The Luckenbooth'.

PPS: For real 'Hairs on the back of the neck' stuff, try track 5 on 'Rain Hail Or Shine', which includes a wonderful singing by Davy of 'Norland Wind' (and some great tunes to go with it). Fabulous!

I sing this unaccompanied, and it is probably my most requested song. But you know, I transcribed -- and anglicized a bit -- the words from the Battlefield Band's Friday Harbor, and they do it not only in braid scots with a full electric backup, but they also use a bagpipe on top of the words, at least to the last verse.
And they splice a dance tune into the breaks, Luckenbill, I think it is.
So, if you actually want to hear the words, and I think they're gorgeous, you might want to back down on the accompaniment, or go without, but if you're going for versimilitude, the more noise, the better.
Blessings,
Barbara

Bob Eaton leads this one at the Press Room sessions, unaccomanied, with a half dozen or more voices on the chorus. No instruments need be applied -- Tom

Davy Steele was a bouzouki player as well as guitarist. I believe this song was written on the bouzouki from the way the chords lay out. I have tried it on mine and it sounds better on the zouk than it does on the guitar.

It lays out as a great clatter of chords that are too big for the words they cover. The chords I posted may not have aligned with the right words.

Go to Google and search this song as -The Last Trip Home Chords-. There are several choices.

One note - I used quarter notes for the rhythm throughout because each verse is a little different. However, the notes are not sung in a strict rhythm as notated. Feel free to lengthen one and shorten another as the lyrics seem to dictate.

I'll set the lyrics in a NoteWorthy file and get the NWC to Joe and MIDI to Alan.

Does anyone have the words/tune to a Battlefield Band song, the Last Trip Home please?

The only bits of the chorus I can remember are:

***** ? plough the field
The horses day is gone
This is the last trip home,
So walk on boys, walk on.

The verses tell the story of how it is the last day of work for the Clydesdale horses, the farmer now has a tractor and the singer never thought that the day would come when the horse wasn't needed. The last verse tells of how people lined the road to watch them come home.

It was played on Folk on 2 about an hour ago (8.30ish, UK time), and of course I can't remember most of it or the name of the album it was on..... but if anyone can enlighten me, I would be grateful

Thanks

Liz

I guess all that computer jargon in the newcomers thread didn't sink in properly. Let me try those lyrics again.

So, steady boys, walk on
Your work is nearly done
No more you'll till nor plow the fields
The horses day is done
And this will be your last walk home
So, steady boys, walk on

Thanks for your patience. The only way this old hillbilly can learn some things is to do it til I get it right.

I heard the Battlefield Band perform this on NPR a few weeks ago, and can't get it out of my head. The song is about tractors replacing horses for farm work. The only part that stuck with me was the chorus.

So, steady boys, walk on
Your work is nearly done
No more You'll till nor plow the fields
The horses day is done
And this will be your last walk home
So, steady boys, walk on

Thanks and take care,
