Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Last Walk Home/Last Trip Home From: Backwoodsman Date: 17 Feb 09 - 03:22 AM Davy came with Patsy on a Poozies gig at a village hall close to where I live, not long after he was diagnosed and just before the release of 'Friday Harbour', and although he clearly wasn't in great health, he got up (having been introduced without fanfare, simply as 'Patsy's husband, Davy') and sang 'The Last Trip Home' during The Poozies' second set. It was the first time I'd heard the song, and with Patsy's and Mary's harps, Eilidh's fiddle and Karen's accordion, it was a masterful peformance. Hairs on the back of the neck stuff. A fine song from a fine singer/writer/player. Very sadly missed. RIP Davy. PS: The tune which goes with it on 'Friday Harbour' is 'The Luckenbooth'. PPS: For real 'Hairs on the back of the neck' stuff, try track 5 on 'Rain Hail Or Shine', which includes a wonderful singing by Davy of 'Norland Wind' (and some great tunes to go with it). But you know, I transcribed -- and anglicized a bit -- the words from the Battlefield Band's Friday Harbor, and they do it not only in braid scots with a full electric backup, but they also use a bagpipe on top of the words, at least to the last verse. And they splice a dance tune into the breaks, Luckenbill, I think it is. So, if you actually want to hear the words, and I think they're gorgeous, you might want to back down on the accompaniment, or go without, but if you're going for versimilitude, the more noise, the better. I believe this song was written on the bouzouki from the way the chords lay out. I have tried it on mine and it sounds better on the zouk than it does on the guitar. It lays out as a great clatter of chords that are too big for the words they cover. The chords I posted may not have aligned with the right words. ***** ? plough the field The verses tell the story of how it is the last day of work for the Clydesdale horses, the farmer now has a tractor and the singer never thought that the day would come when the horse wasn't needed. The last verse tells of how people lined the road to watch them come home. It was played on Folk on 2 about an hour ago (8.30ish, UK time), and of course I can't remember most of it or the name of the album it was on..... but if anyone can enlighten me, I would be grateful Thanks Liz |
