Subject: BS: Power to the people From: Raptor Date: 23 Feb 09 - 08:03 AM I'm bullfrog powered now! How about you? |
Subject: RE: BS: Power to the people From: CarolC Date: 23 Feb 09 - 08:23 AM That's very cool. I don't think we have anything like that here. Just nuclear. :-\ |
Subject: RE: BS: Power to the people From: Rapparee Date: 23 Feb 09 - 09:06 AM Should I point out that over 400 wind generators will soon be installed within 20 miles of here? Or that a company which makes wind turbines and another the makes the blades have already opened here? Or that a plant that manufactures the polysilicon for solar cells will ship its first product before the end of this year? Welcome to Pocatello, Idaho -- where we're making the future of US energy production. And by the way -- Idaho National Laboratory is just up the road, where they're working on safer nuclear generators and new ways to clean up nuclear waste by re-using it. And the Idaho Accelerator Laboratory, part of Idaho State University, where they installing a "rabbit" to make isotopes for nuclear medicine. Not all the energy news is bad.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Power to the people From: Bill D Date: 23 Feb 09 - 02:29 PM "It's an ill wind that blows no good!" I'm sure happy to this technology catching on....and amazing progress is being made in cheap, flexible solar panels. Plus... I saw a program demonstrating piezo-electric power run by people walking over elements embedded in rubber/plastic sheets. They powered stuff like store signs. |
Subject: RE: BS: Power to the people From: Tangledwood Date: 23 Feb 09 - 04:29 PM Welcome to Bullfrog Power That's a disappointment - I thought someone had finally found a use for our cane toads. |
Subject: RE: BS: Power to the people From: Amos Date: 23 Feb 09 - 04:49 PM Round them up the chute and into the vat and they melt down into an acceptable form of biodiesel, I understand.... Rapaire being experience in keeping a dally on the horn could volunteer to pioneer the read of Frogboy, yippee-kiayay--ki-yo, kerrex, kerrex..... A |
Subject: RE: BS: Power to the people From: Teribus Date: 24 Feb 09 - 10:52 AM They're about to install an experimental one off the coast of Norway, we got involved in bidding for the installation work. Ultimately they would be installed in blocks of 50 turbines. During the Risk Analysis and HAZID someone asked the question if an environmental impact study or evaluation had been made as these were going to be installed in deep water - nobody knew. The same person then asked what the carbon footprint of this experimental wind turbine was - nobody knew. With its three 140 tonne suction anchors; three 800metres of 120mm anchor chain; 154m floating cylindrical concrete base structure and 100m steel tower, wind generator, nacelle and blades, the man who raised the question ventured that its carbon footprint to construct the required components let alone what it would take to install would mean that this turbine would never produce enough power to wipe its slate clean and that the most environmentally friendly thing to do would be to not bother building it. Different kettle of fish of course if the thing is actually sitting on the seabed, as they are off Holland and Denmark. |
Subject: RE: BS: Power to the people From: Rapparee Date: 24 Feb 09 - 11:54 AM And different again if they are sitting on dry land. |
Subject: RE: BS: Power to the people From: SINSULL Date: 24 Feb 09 - 12:22 PM I said "Power to the people. Off the pig!" at the office and no one had a clue what I was going on about. So very old... |
