Subject: Tech: What is Yahoo Briefcase? Legit?
From: Bonnie Shaljean

In one of my Yahoo email accounts (but not the other) I have the following message:

Dear Yahoo! Briefcase user,

We will be officially closing Yahoo! Briefcase on March 30, 2009. Until then, we are offering you the opportunity to download your files back to your computer. You will need to take action before we close, after which any files remaining on Yahoo! Briefcase will be deleted and no longer accessible.

To access your Yahoo! Briefcase account, click the link below:

[I am re-typing this so it's not a polluted paste]: http://briefcase.yahoo.com

This URL is what also shows in my status bar when I hover the cursor over it.   Heading is "Yahoo Briefcase Is Closing - Action Required"

Needless to say, I did not click on the link, and I have never even HEARD of Yahoo Briefcase so I don't see how I can have one. I don't know if it means I have to worry about the stuff I have stored in my email folders being lost because they are dumping everything, or if this is just one of those scare-scams that try to manipulate you. Nor do I like any subject heading that demands Action.

Has anyone else come across this? Is it legit or scumware? It looks legit, Yahoo logos and all, but I don't like the smell. Also it didn't appear in the email programme I use the most. What IS Yahoo Briefcase? Can you have it and not know it (like certain diseases)? Help!

some people use it, I don't

Oh didn't answer your question. It is a facility on Yahoo to allow you to share your files with other yahoo users. Like I said I wouldn't use it. If I wanted to share a file I would send it to the person I wanted or put it on one of my servers.

Cheers, Old Dude. But it says "To access your Yahoo! Briefcase account, click the link below" and I don't HAVE any such account. Is this just a general thing to all potential users, then? And, presumably they really are closing Briefcase.

In any event I'll just delete that notice. I was worried about losing my private emails, but gather that I won't, and that I can safely ignore this warning. Thanks -

All registered Yahoo users have a Briefcase account. I used it to transfer files from home to work easily. Guess I'll have to go ahead and download them. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I haven't gotten any notice from Yahoo.

Jeff it is not safe my friend. For files you care it others can see no problem for work probably not a good idea since it is pretty much wide open

Doesn't sound like the question was answered. I got the same email to and wondering if clicking on the links would put a virus on my computer. Or steal information on my computer. I never click links on email. I don't think yahoo sent this email - and if they did - they were stupid to do it this way in light of email scams that are so prevelant today.

I totally agree. I dumped that email, since I don't have a Yahoo Briefcase thingy. It is a very stupid way of sending a notice - if it really WAS from Yahoo. A lot of scams wrap themselves around a genuine article to disguise themselves. And "Action Required" in the heading followed by just-click-this-link guarantees that the only thing I'm going to click is the Delete button. STILL don't know what it was all about, but the main thing I was worried about was losing my emails, which seems not to be likely to happen.

Further doubts are raised in my mind by the fact that I - who don't have a Briefcase account - got this notice and JeffP who does, didn't.

Did a googlesearch on Yahoo Briefcase + Virus and found this site.
I received the email as well and I've never heard of Yahoo Briefcase either.
I didn't click the link, as the emailadress looked off to me (yahoo@email.yahoo-inc.com).

Yes, Yahoo briefcase is legit, and the email is probably legit as well. Just go to briefcase.yahoo.com and see if you have anything in it. If you do, then copy the files if they are of any use. We all have briefcases as part of our Yahoo account, but few people ever used it.

Regarding whether you got an email or not, the message was probably caught in a spam filter. Lots of email from Yahoo is (for obvious reasons: so many spammers use it).

I just looked at mine. I have 4 folders, 3 empty and one which has an mp3 named testcase.mp3 from 2003. I don't think I need that! And, no, I don't remember storing it there but I undoubtedly did. I remember little from 2003 ... or 2004 ... or ... oh, nevermind.

I used to store some large files like mp3's I'd created.
I'd forgotten they were even in my Yahoo Briefcase when I got the message the they were discontinuing it. I went in and downloaded those old files to my new laptop and was glad to have copies of them.
It is legitimate, part of Yahoo mail.

Hi! I agree that the message Yahoo sent out was not very well thought out, I just went to Yahoo and checked it out. It says that the Briefcase feature will indeed be phased out in March.
While you're in your Yahoo e-mail account, in the upper lefthand corner click on Yahoo and it will bring up a list of Yahoo Services on the left side of your screen. If you click "See More Services" (or something along those lines) at the bottom of that list, it will bring up an alphabetized list of all Yahoo services available. Click on Briefcase and you'll see the same announcement in the e-mail with the link that we received.

Whether you ike Yahoo or not, Briefcase is legit part of Yahoo (at least until March). I've never used it myself but am aware of it's existence in my list of Yahoo Services. It appears Yahoo are offloading as much as they can, trimming the fat as it were.

It mentions "billing information". Sucker scam. People will give their credit card numbers. I won't open it. Yahoo should sent out immediate warnings.

No, it is not a scam. You could either use the free briefcase to store files, or you could by a larger space. That's what the billing information refers to... the paid larger storage.

Alice

I'm not saying it WAS a scam, only that how it was worded was very suspicious. How many dodgy spam or outright virus links (especially fake bank ones) have you seen that said "Your [whatever] is closing: Action required" and then gave you a link to click on? And those were false, though they often hid behind genuine names/entities.

How on earth are we to know? I do think it was stupid of Yahoo to word it like that, and not simply give you click-instructions how to access your account. I STILL will never click on a link I know nothing about.

gosh, can't you read, guest?

Myself and others here who use yahoo email and have used yahoo briefcase have already posted about it.

It's not a scam. I received the email that it is discontinuing, so I went into my yahoo briefcase and saved what I'd stored there. That's all the message is about.

Thanks Alice: I got the notice too. Clicked on it. Almost nothing in there. Downloaded for reference. I got confused between briefcase and the unlimited storage that you get via mail.
Thanks everyone for sticking together and providing the information necessary to clarify & substantiate things like this. It helps computer noobs like me a lot.

Hey, how about a new slogan for Joe and the boys? Mudcat! MORE than just Folk Music...
Thanks again everybody...bob/CANADA (a.k.a. The Cool Blue North)

"It mentions "billing information". Sucker scam. People will give their credit card numbers. I won't open it. Yahoo should sent out immediate warnings."

Guest, if you had read a bit closer, you'd, perhaps, of noticed that the biling link refers to those who have the Premium Edition of Briefcase, and a refund of any monies that have accrude upto and including the closing date of Briefcase, at the end of March.

I receieved a notice today regarding the closing of Briefcase. The sheer number of people who habe this service means it's going to take a wee while to inform all of the said people, so if you haven't yet recieved and e-mail regarding the aforementioned subject, you will.
