Subject: Obit: Wendy Richard From: Fiolar Date: 26 Feb 09 - 02:31 PM Sadly Wendy Richard has died of cancer today - February 26th 2009. She was born on July 20th 1943 and may best be remembered for her role as Pauline Fowler in the soap "Eastenders" although she starred in many tv series including the comedy one "Are You Being Served" where she had the part of Miss Brahms. She and Mike Sarne reached number one on the Hit Parade with the number "Come Outside" in June 1962. Her lovely spirit will probably now be saying the Mr Humphries (John Inman in "Are You Being Served") catchphrase "I'm Free". RIP. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Wendy Richard From: GUEST,DWR Date: 26 Feb 09 - 02:41 PM Gosh, good memories there. Wendy was a favorite of mine, even bought the Are You Being Served Again set and have a few shows recorded from the regular series. Thanks to Wendy, condolences to her family. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Wendy Richard From: Rasener Date: 26 Feb 09 - 02:42 PM That is so sad. She was a star, and is now a star up somewhere in the universe. RIP Wendy |
Subject: RE: Obit: Wendy Richard From: GUEST,Stephen Date: 26 Feb 09 - 04:17 PM She was on a hit record Come Outside by Mike Sarne here |
Subject: RE: Obit: Wendy Richard - 26 February 2009 From: bubblyrat Date: 26 Feb 09 - 05:44 PM She also did the voice on " Johnny Reggae Reggae" ( "Lay It On Me "), I believe----pure magic !! RIP. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Wendy Richard - 26 February 2009 From: Surreysinger Date: 26 Feb 09 - 06:16 PM I just checked that one out Bubblyrat - if she did, her Appreciation Society website doesn't comment on it as one of her recordings, and there's no authoritative corroboration of it. The single was recorded by the Piglets ... one of Jonathan King's "groups", and one theory I have seen suggests that the vocals were actually King himself but speeded up .. whether that's true or not, I know not. There IS mention of course, of Come Outside - the original recording with Mike Sarne , and an updated remake with Mike Berry in the 1980;s, and a recording which she made with a friend shortly after the original "Come outside" was recorded (but which never hit the headlines much at the time). Sad news, particularly bearing in mind the fact that she was given the all clear from cancer on two separate occasions. Over the years he work gave a great deal of pleasure and entertainment. RIP. |
Subject: RE: Obit: actress Wendy Richard - 26 February 2009 From: SINSULL Date: 27 Feb 09 - 01:54 PM Oh I loved her and her ruffles. Mrs. Slocum so resented her ruffles. RIP |
Subject: RE: Obit: actress Wendy Richard - 26 February 2009 From: catspaw49 Date: 27 Feb 09 - 06:22 PM We are now being served less. I loved Wendy Richard and have followed her illness which she has fought long and hard with great courage. When the reruns play, it will be sad to watch her, knowing she is gone. Thank you for all the roles and characters and especially for Miss Brahms...........rest easy......... Spaw |

Subject: RE: Obit: actress Wendy Richard - 26 February 2009 From: Stilly River Sage Date: 27 Feb 09 - 07:21 PM I never saw the name written, and with the British accents, I always thought her character's name was "Miss Brown," with a kind of funny inflection, sounding like "Brawn." SRS |
Subject: RE: Obit: actress Wendy Richard - 26 February 2009 From: bubblyrat Date: 28 Feb 09 - 11:45 AM Well, Irene,I am sure that I read somewhere that Wendy was recruited to do the "Johnny Reggae" voice, presumably by the not-much-lamented (in view of his predilections) Mr King .Somebody, somewhere, must know !! |
Subject: RE: Obit: actress Wendy Richard - 26 February 2009 From: Bill H //\\ Date: 28 Feb 09 - 03:34 PM One of the cleverest of Brit Coms--Are You Being Served and holds up well over the years. Too bad they tried to do a sequel---best always to leave on a high note---Mrs. Slocum should have stayed home and cared for her pussy. Miss Brahms character was just perfect---as they all were as an ensemble. Is John Inman still with us or is he also---as the writer said "...free". Bill Hahn |
Subject: RE: Obit: actress Wendy Richard - 26 February 2009 From: GUEST,Allen in OZ Date: 28 Feb 09 - 07:24 PM Dear Bill Hahn Sadly, John Inman is also " free" AD 1943 |
Subject: RE: Obit: actress Wendy Richard - 26 February 2009 From: Stilly River Sage Date: 28 Feb 09 - 09:17 PM I'm sorry to see that Inman is gone also. He visited the U.S. a few years ago to help promote the series on a fundraiser, and was really quite a charming fellow. He was such a master of the double entendre. Of course in that program (Are You Being Served?, they all were. SRS |
