Subject: Latin American folk songs?

Is anyone here an expert in Latin American folk music? I have not had much luck in web searches. I am particularly interested in the Spanish Europeanized music from the last couple of hundred years (not the indigenous native folk music), Cuba, Argentina, Chile -- not the tango!(which I love, but that is not what I am looking for). I can't even seem to find a good starter book (in English, my Spanish is poor but improving). Anybody got any good advice?
Yours, Peter T.

Look at threads contributed by Alistair(UK) who is (was?) based in Brazil. He's not posted for a while, we suspect he's organising a UK tour by a local musical group. There must be some Hispanic US 'Catters as well, I'm always surprised by the expertise on the Mudcat, even if I've had to answer a couple of my own queries!
Best of luck!

Dear Mr. Peter T.: I'm argentine and live in Buenos Aires (and I'm an amateur singer). If you send me an e-mail or write here about details on what you are looking for, may be I could help. Best regards -

Dear Peter, this is an excellent site on Eduardo Falu : http://home.coqui.net/mallory/eduardo.htm

You'll find details of his recent CDs, performances, biography, and comments about his works with academic musicians like Camerata Bariloche.

(By the way, if you like classic chamber music, the Camerata is higly recommendable, at the quality level of the Zagreb Soloists or I Musici) I think this kind of europeanized folk is what you are looking for. It is no less argentine than any native classic, but it is far more rich than simple folk. (I know, this is questionable, but I mean that these are argentine academic musicians making classic music with folk roots)

You can find some interesting info by searching "folklore argentino" using the Excite search engine. Since almost all sites are in Spanish, please feel free to ask me for any translation you or other MudCatters may need. Best regards escamillo@ciudad.com.ar

Care for mariachi music (click), Peter? Be sure to check their "songs" section for lyrics.

A search for Corridos will also bring some good stuff up. Also here. Also here, but not so much.

Thanks to you, Andres, I have been burrowing away. The web site will be great. There is a fine selection of Falu's guitar work available. I have been tracking down others you mentioned in your e-mail.
Folkies here may know Arlo Guthrie's version of "Victor Jara". I have been reading about his vicious end, and listening to a lousy record called Manifesto which means well, but has his songs with English voiceovers!!! Looking out for the original. I intend to post some lyrics and translations of some of this here, with your help over the next while. We need some more Spanish folk song representation here. Thanks as always,
yours, Peter T.
P.S. How did the concert go?

Two good books are "Songs from Latin America" and "Songs from Mexico" both published by Mel Bay. Another good one is "All-time Spanish Favorites" by Creative Concepts Publishing Company.

Buena suerte! KickyC

I don't know if it is still in print, but Oak Publications (Bless 'em)published a book, "Folk Songs of the Americas" edited by A.L. Loyd and Isabel Aretz de Ramon y Rivera (you gotta love some of those Hispanic names). Actually the last line of the Author, title, etc. says "for the International Folk Music Council". It is a great collection of songs, beginning with Canada and ending with Uruguay. All of the non-English songs have translations.

Finding it may be a bit of a problem. Ask Joe Offer. He's put me on the track of books I thought I'd never find.

Peter T.>P.S. How did the concert go? Last week we sung Dvorak's Mass in D Major, it was a pleasure. The Messiah goes in October (some weeks before the great Haendel jubilee announced to be performed by 400 orchestras and choruses all over the world at exactly the same time)- Thanks for asking Alice, you're welcome
