Barbara, thanks a bunch, this is one of the sites I've wanted to visit. I'm glad I finally made it. I love these old recordings. It's really an inspiration.

Well, Bill, they don't seem to make it easy to get into the Library of Congress Folklore Collection. I had only about 45 minutes, and I couldn't figure out how to get in the door. I saw all the pretty stuff, burt never did figure out how to actually get close enough to a book to touch it.
Charlie Baum tried to tell me how to get in, but I didn't quite follow his instructions.
Most places, if I can't get in the normal way, I pull out my badge and say, "I'm from the Feds." It works great - usually, but not in Washington, D.C....

so, I sat for 30 minutes trying to load a .wav file of "Turkey in the Straw" from Texas in 1939...(I cannot get RealAudio to work again..)...and I waited while 300,000 byte images of sheet music came up..and it is all wonderful...and then it HIT me!.I have lived for over 20 years only 40 minutes from the L of C, and I have been there ONCE!..I could have been down at the desk every other week reading and listening to this stuff!

*sigh*...anyway, the site is a delight, and an amazing resource, and THIS is what the WWW ought to be about.

Allan C.--a look at the copyright restrictions of this collection (available on the website) specifically permits non-commercial educational uses. As long as you're not redistributing this stuff for money, the copyright police give their blessing! Record away!

RECORDING TRIP

The John and Ruby Lomax 1939 Southern States Recording Trip Collection is now available online through the Library of Congress American Memory Web site at the following URL:

This multiformat ethnographic field collection includes 686 sound recordings, as well as photographic prints, fieldnotes, dust jackets, and other manuscripts documenting folksingers and folksongs during a three-month, 6,502-mile trip through eight Southern states: Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia.

Beginning in Port Aransas, Texas, on March 31, 1939, and ending at the Library of Congress on June 14, 1939, John Avery Lomax, Honorary Consultant and Curator of the Archive of American Folk Song (now the Archive of Folk Culture, American Folklife Center), and his wife, Ruby Terrill Lomax, recorded approximately 25 hours of music from more than 300 performers. The recordings represent a broad spectrum of musical styles, including ballads, blues, children's songs, cowboy songs, fiddle tunes, field hollers, lullabies, play-party songs, religious dramas, spirituals, and work songs. Over 100 of these songs are sung in Spanish.

A special presentation on the collection provides a state-by-state snapshot of the Lomaxes' expedition, highlighting the diverse musical styles of each region and the variety of documentation archived by the collectors.
