Subject: Song lyrics for "Messing About On The River" From: Chris Philpott. Email: 100272.443@compuserve.com Date: 15 May 98 - 12:52 PM Can anyone let me know the lyrics to "Messing About On The River"? Thanks in advance, Chris 100272.443@compuserve.com |
Subject: RE: From: John Nolan Date: 15 May 98 - 03:31 PM I hope someone posts the words, Chris - I like that song too. Last time I heard it sung was by Danny Kyle and the gang in Glasgow's Tron Theatre, during a memorial night for Josh McCrae, who wrote the song about the Clyde. |
Subject: Messing About on the River From: Jenny Date: 01 Jul 99 - 09:59 AM Can anyone please tell me who made this record and roughly what year it came out - 50's or 60's? Thanks |
Subject: RE: Messing About on the River From: Allan C. Date: 01 Jul 99 - 10:21 AM I don't know when it was recorded - probably in the late '60's but it is on an album called: I Wanna Sing You A Song, Max Bygraves, MACCD/MC172 More Info Here |
Subject: RE: Messing About on the River From: Jenny Date: 01 Jul 99 - 10:29 AM Allan C - thanks for info but I'm looking for the guy who made the original record which went into the charts and I'm fairly certain it wasn't Max Bygraves. Thanks anyway. Jenny |
Subject: RE: Messing About on the River From: Roger the zimmer Date: 01 Jul 99 - 10:30 AM Max? Ugh !(great repertoire but best sung by others, I have a great MB piano roll- all the words without his voice, for me to murder, pedalling is good for the thigh muscles too!). My first guess was Robin Hall & Jimmie McGregor but my mind's ear has a soft, slightly Irish, voice like Val Doonican's, not a brash breezy one like Max B.? 1960s would be my guess, rather than '70s. Steve Parkes, Britain's answer to Joe Offer, will probably pin it down- it isn't in my collection. |
Subject: RE: Messing About on the River From: bigJ Date: 01 Jul 99 - 03:36 PM Hey Jenny,Jenny, Go to the top of the page and at 'Filter' type in - messing - then set 'Age' at 365 days and - voila. |
Subject: RE: Messing About on the River From: bigJ Date: 01 Jul 99 - 03:39 PM Whoops! - don't forget to click on 'Refresh Thread', of course. |
Subject: RE: Messing About on the River From: Susanne (skw) Date: 01 Jul 99 - 03:49 PM How about Josh MacRae? It must have been the early Sixties. Hamish Imlach talks about it in his book, but I don't have time to look it up just now. |
Subject: RE: Messing About on the River From: Legal Eagle Date: 01 Jul 99 - 05:10 PM Definitely early 60s. Something in me shouts "Robin Hall and Jimmie McGregor", but a more rational voice disagrees.

Subject: RE: Messing About on the River From: Penny S. Date: 01 Jul 99 - 05:18 PM I can hear (mind's ear), the opening bars, with sound effects of oars in rowlocks, and water under the bows of a wooden rowing boat. I can only hear one singer. I wasn't the guy who did England Swings, was it? Penny |
Subject: RE: Messing About on the River From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Jul 99 - 02:07 AM Click here to get to that other thread, and lyrics, and tune, and background information. Seems the most credible-sounding allegation is that the song was popularized by Josh Macrae. Never heard the song, myself. -the U.S. answer to Steve Parkes- |
Subject: RE: Messing About on the River From: Jenny Date: 07 Jul 99 - 06:32 AM Thanks to everyone on this. Yes, it's Josh Macrae. Don't exactly go a bundle on it but at least I can put an end to my sad friend's continual nagging for the answer. Maybe he should buy a computer and get on-line? |
Subject: RE: Messing About on the River From: Steve Parkes Date: 07 Jul 99 - 10:51 AM Thanks for the vote of confidence, Roger. I will always defer to Joe on Mudcat issues. After all, he's been around a lot longer than me.

Subject: RE: Messing About on the River From: John MacKenzie Date: 25 Aug 02 - 05:48 AM Didn't think that Julie Feelsick was English in the first place, and in the second place equating her in any way with St Joan, is taking hyperbole to the farthest extent of it's definition. With boggled mind.....Giok |
Subject: RE: Messing About on the River From: Jim McLean Date: 25 Aug 02 - 06:34 AM Julie is Mexican/American. I 'played' with her in the earyt 60's in Germany, Garmisch PatenKirchen. We did the American soldiers camps, she played guitar and sang and I played the bagpipes! Honestly! Jim Mclean |
Subject: RE: Messing About on the River From: Eric the Viking Date: 25 Aug 02 - 01:05 PM I've still got the albulm on vinyl! There's better stuff on it than that song, wonder that Gareth hasn't posted the dirty lyrics somewhere! |
Subject: RE: Messing About on the River From: Kenny B (inactive) Date: 25 Aug 02 - 01:18 PM Thred creep and Link to Julie FeliX Still touring and well worth seeing and meeting, I saw about 3 years ago in a church hall in Methil (Fife, I was led to believe that her previous gig to Methil was the Albert Hall in London.
Thanks. -Joe Offer- |
