Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Maritime by John Beavis From: maeve Date: 29 Mar 09 - 08:19 AM GUEST- You'll need a name to post on Mudcat. Welcome! I see it listed as part of a compilation Here "Celebration [sound recording] : Port Fairy Folk Festival music.[1996]* Port Fairy Folk Festival. Charlestown, N.S.W. : Sandstock Music, [1996]. The maritime / John Beavis and Di McNicol Sandstock Music: SSM 052CD." I found lyrics to a different John Beavis song over here: Danny Spooner website That's the best I can do while half asleep. maeve |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Maritime by John Beavis From: GUEST,Guest, DaveA Date: 30 Mar 09 - 08:59 AM John Beavis dropped out of sight many years ago - I think he moved into the Gospel field. But he left a legacy of a working songwriter who always had his pen & notebook with him to record a good phrase or riff as they occurred to him. I'll see if the infamous singing accountant (Cliff Ellery) has a copy of the lyrics & if so I'll post them. Cheers Dave |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Maritime by John Beavis From: Rowan Date: 30 Mar 09 - 11:40 PM John was one of the earlier exponents of DADGAD tuning in Oz. His father was known to have been involved in seafaring around Oz and the collection of such songs. I too have lost track of John but might be able to track him down via his sister, with whom I did a Dip.Ed. many years ago. Cheers, Rowan |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Maritime (John Beavis) From: GUEST,Monica Date: 30 Sep 14 - 01:37 AM John and my mother played music together many moons ago, and are still dear friends. I have a CD of his and would be more than happy to pass a copy forward 😊 |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Maritime (John Beavis) From: Andrez Date: 30 Sep 14 - 08:18 AM I remember John from around the folk clubs in inner city Melbourne. He had a nice gentle way about him. I remember Di McNicol and her ex Jeff Hollings too. Wonder what happened to them as well? Cheers, Andrez |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Maritime (John Beavis) From: GUEST,TommyinMaleny Date: 13 Jul 21 - 03:16 AM You can listen to a recording of the song from 1978 here, and get the words from that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQCJOh_ZTWU It's a fifty minute recording from 1978 NZ Folk festival. 'The Maritime' is track 2. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Maritime (John Beavis) From: GUEST,TommyinMaleny Date: 13 Jul 21 - 04:49 AM Here are the words, as far as I can tell, to The Maritime as performed by John Beavis and Steve Moffat at the fifth Auckland Folk Festival (Moller's) in 1978 Well I saw the boat this evening reaching out across the water Moving slowly past the bridges to the entrance of the harbour Let there be a bird as fair that I might find to take me further With our backs against the breeze and outward bound Outward bound, leaving everything I've found without regret I will pack my things and follow while I can Unsentimental ocean-going man And reflections from the windows of the cars out on the tollway As I lay against the jetty with the wall across my shoulders And I strain my ears to listen to the creaking of the canvas The endless water glisten, can you hear that restless call? Restless call. We'll be leaving on the turning of the tide I will pack my things and follow while I can Unsentimental ocean-going man The first verse is then repeated, interspersed with the following version of the first verse of "The Water Is Wide" 'The water is wide I can't cross o'er And neither have I wings to fly Build me a boat that can carry two And I will row my love and I' Outward bound, leaving everything I've found without regret I will pack my things and follow while I can Unsentimental ocean-going man |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Maritime (John Beavis) From: GUEST,TommyinMaleny Date: 13 Jul 21 - 05:19 AM About thirty minutes into the youtube clip from the 1978 Auckland Folk Festival (see earlier comment) the sleeve notes from the LP are usefully displayed. Here's what they say about track 2, The Maritime: "'The Maritime' is one of the many excellent songs composed by John Beavis and performed by him with assistance from Steve Moffat. John is originally from Australia and, since the festival, has gone to the U.S.A. where he is reported to be doing well. Steve has been on the Auckland folk music scene for some time and is a well-liked performer of both traditional and contemporary material." |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Maritime (John Beavis) From: rich-joy Date: 16 Jul 21 - 03:06 AM Re Aussie singer, Di McNicol, I found another 6 folk tracks c.1976, on Soundcloud under Terry Chapman : https://soundcloud.com/terry-chapman-152583044/sets/di-mcnichol-circa-1977 and she was also in the c.1988 show "The [magic] Pudding" : https://www.discogs.com/Brian-Appleford-And-Louis-McManus-Songs-From-The-Pudding/release/10787343 But perhaps she deserves her own thread?! Cheers, R-J |
