Subject: Deckman is out of hospital w/ new hip
From: Stewart
Date: 02 Apr 09 - 10:02 PM

Bob went into the hospital last Monday for a long overdue hip replacement - his second, his other hip was replaced a few years ago.

His lovely bride, Judy, reports that he came home today. Apparently everything went well. He's drugged up for pain and crabby as hell (what's new?) - just his usual self! Not able to get on the computer yet, so we won't hear from him for a while. But everything should improve, including his disposition.

He put this off for quite a while, but finally it became too painful, so he had to get it fixed.

We wish him a good and speedy recovery.

Cheers, S. in Seattle
where the rain falls gently,
and we hope to see the sun,
once or twice a year!

I called very briefly to say hello and get well soon--he sounds good, but tired. I didn't even expect him to be up or near the phone.

Some of you remember he had a hard time with the first hip replacement--I won't go into it, you can search his threads and find his story, but I wanted to be sure it went better, easier this time, and it sounds like it did indeed.

If he starts muttering things like, "You will be absorbed! Resistance is futile!" I'm gonna freak out!!

I had a serious operation on both hands some time ago. When it was done I said to the surgeon, "Will I be able to play the piano?"

He said, "Sure."

I said, "That's amazing, because I've never played one before."

(Gets coat and shambles out...)

Get well soon - hope everything heals up double quick and that you're skipping like a Spring lamb in the very near future.

Makes me think of Tinker's song - "Bob". Her battery operated boyfriend. One more surgery and you will qualify.
Rest up, my friend.
By the way, what did they do with the old hip? I suspect there is a market for them.

Bob, if you haven't heard Tinker's song, I'll send you a video from last year's Getaway (Tinker permitting). That should cheer you up (unless it gets you guffawing so vigorously that you shake your new hip loose).

Meanwhile, ain't it great to know that now you'll be able to tap dance? ; )

Speedo recovery, pal!

Hey, Bob, how goes life with the new hip?

I'm considering following in your footsteps (hip waders?) sometime in the near future. I do hope you are finding your new hip allows you to pretty much get back to your normal routine. (I know, you're retired, but I mean aside from putting in decks.)
Hope you are back to making music and mischief as much as ever.

So, are you able to tap dance yet?

He left here last Sunday, bound for Coeur d'Alene. His wife was driving, Bob was riding the rods as every proper folksinger should. He did two concerts here and had one in CdA. While here he was up into the wee small hours, dancing and carousing, beating up cops, the usual folksinger stuff. He owes me bail money.

Merry Morning everyone. Let's end this silly thread! Genie ... my hips are doing just fine. One total hip replacement was done about 6 years ago, the other was done last Spring. My only serious advice would be to research your doctor's history. Perhap's talk to several of his past patients and ask their opinion of his work.

My first hip surgery went very wrong, and the fault was mine in NOT looking at the doctor's record. My surgery last spring went well, even if I tore my stitches loose two weeks after surgery ... totally my fault. (I was up on stage too soon and moved wrong).

One final thought ... don't wait TOO LONG. Once the doctor's say it's time ... do it. If you need a new hip, you're living with a LOT OF PAIN! Best wishes ... bob nelson

Glad to know you were up to a 1000+ mi car trip in less than 6 mo after your surgery, Bob.
How long did you have to basically have Judy waiting on you? (And how much longer before you told her you really didn't need that any more?) *g*

Also how long did you have to avoid driving? How long before you could comfortably drive an hour or more at a stretch?

And just what WERE you doing onstage that messed up your hip in the first place?

Genie

I think we must ask ourselves some deep and penetrating questions about Art. For example, is Art Post-Modern Deconstructionist or Expressionist or Baroque or What? Knowing folkies, I'll bet Art is Baroque, flat Baroque.
