This is a fun song and I'm often tempted to play it full blast in a busy computer lab.

THE WHITE COLLAR HOLLER
As recorded by Stan Rogers on "Between the Breaks ... Live!" (1979)

1. Well, I rise up every mornin' at a quarter to eight.
Some woman who's my wife tells me not to be late.
I kiss the kids goodbye; I can't remember their names,
And week after week it's always the same.

CHORUS: And it's ho, boys! Can't you code it? (Wuh!)
And program it right.
Nothin' ever happens in this life o' mine.
I'm haulin' up the data on the Xerox line.

2. And it's code in the data, give the keyboard a punch,
Then cross-correlate and I break for some lunch.
Correlate, tabulate, process, and screen,
Program, print out, regress to the mean.

3. Yea, then it's home again, eat again, watch some TV,
Make love to my woman at ten fifty-three.
I dream the same dream when I'm sleepin' at night:
I'm soarin' over hills like an eagle in flight.

4. Someday I'm going to give up all the buttons and things.
I'll punch that time clock till it can't ring,
Burn up my necktie, and set myself free,
'Cause no one's gonna fold, bend, or mutilate me.

Stan's tounge & cheek work song had it's begining as a prison/track lining song use while linning railroad track. The song would be slower & the tune not to far off. It starts with a somewhat spoken holler. "HO BOY CAN YOU LINE EM, (resp.) done got line. (sung) what I hate bout linin track, these ol bars bout to brake my back (ch) ho boys can you linin em, ho boys give it hell, ho boys can you linin em, see Eloise go linin track.

I'm in a computer programming class (the real stuff, COBOL) and we heard a song called the White Collar Holler. It was done by a group from the Norfolk VA area called Dramtreo. We are trying to find the lyrics and music for this song. ANyone else have any info on this one. SOund like it is pretty old by computer standards as it refers to the Xerox line and punch cards.

Thanks, Dave Hendricks bvdrangs@enter.net

Stan Rogers origainally recorded this song which is by Nigel Russell, published 1979 by Fogarty's Cove Music, Inc. There are Stan Rogers songbooks (still in print?), and one of them has this song. I'm not sure which of his recordings has it.

There is a Stan Rogers page with lyrics, music and notes that's maintained by the Georgian Bay Folk Society in Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada. www.summerfolk.org/songs/lyrics.html Have fun its a really great song. Good for a capella song circles.

Reid.

Its in the database. Click here to find it. I also refreshed a thread from last year that contains a lot of computer parodies. Check out "Write in C" to the tune of "Let It Be."

You might want to give a listen to "Lining Track", a worksong from the prison/railroad, to fully appricate, White Collar Holler.

Intro:Ho Boys, can ya line it,
Done got line
What I hate about lining track
These ol bars bout to break my back

Ch:I say ho boy can you line
Ho boys give it hell
Ho boys can you line it
See Eloise go lining track

See the Captain sitting in the shade
He don't do nothing but he gets paid

Way down younder in the holler field
Angels working on that chariot wheel
Mary, Martin, Luke & John
All those disciples dead & gone

many more. Barry

My friend and I sing this song from a women's point of view. The lyrics are basicaly the same, but for the final verse:

Come home, feed the kids, sweep up the floor; Make love to my man at 10:54..

Etc.

What we need is for Nigel to issue a "WHITE COLLAR HOLLER - Release 2.0" of the song for current technology including Y2K, disparaging remarks about Microsoft, etc. This to be followed by release 2.1 which fixes the metre problems encountered in Release 2.0.

It is in the database at: WHITE COLLAR HOLLER but that is corrupt. The middle of the song is missing. (or at least it is in lynx, looks like bad html to me)

Does anyone know what the missing parts are, and how to get the database fixed?

Click here for a good collection of lyrics to songs recorded by Stan Rogers. There's just one line missing from the online version of the database, and the PC version is intact. Say, Max, did you notice that little problem? Here are the complete lyrics:
