Hi, sorry I didn't put this in earlier. Just found this site. We were unfortunately unable to experience the whole Sweeps Festival. From Canada visiting our daughter in London. Fran and Chris were gracious enough to set us up for Thursday night to be up at Blue Bell hill for sunrise. My side (Orange Peel Border, 1 and a bit hours north of Toronto, Canada) was at High Park in Toronto awakening with the sun. My husband Jim and I were thrilled to be able to join the ranks in witnessing the awakening in Rochester.

Chris met us at the train station on Thursday evening then went onto the Good Intent Pub where we met Karen and Dal. I had to pee really, really bad. We had a few pints in London throughout the day and the damn washroom door on the train was locked. Funny thing, Chris mentioned there was one at the Good Intent. Much relieved. Fran came to meet us, finished our pints and were whisked off to there home where we had a wonderful dinner along with Ben and Georgina. Off to bed!

Up early with memories that will last a lifetime. I have to say it was a great experience to be there with you all at Blue Bell Hill.

Back to the Good Intent for a good English Breakfast. Unfortunately jet lag hit like a brick wall and Fran had to take me back for a sleep. Woke up feeling like a new person and ready to take on yet another day doing a walk about in London. Sorry I was unable to take part in the pub for breakfast. I know that Karen and Dal worked very hard putting it all together and then have to continue with the fast pace throughout the weekend. I'm so sorry I never had the opportunity to say thank you to you both for the wonderful greeting you gave us at the pub on Thursday night as well as Friday a.m..

All in all it was a wonderful experience and we enjoyed the warm welcome. Jim really, really enjoyed the chili vodka! He loves hot stuff, what can I say.

Re the Casino - Talking to Stephen Dixon (curretly Essex, formerly Medway, archive Services manager) yesterday - he says that building is listed. I guess it will have to burn all the way down to the ground get a change of use.

Thanks for all your lovely comments about my uncle charlie's moothie playing, he thoroughly enjoyed himself, like we all did When he was younger he went on the carl levis talent show, which was one of the very first talent shows i think to be shown on tele,and was asked if he wanted to go on the road, but declined as he had a family. He is never at home and later on this year,he might be going to wales or somewhere in the UK for a short break, staying at one of the RAFA homes for ex serviceman,and no matter,where he goes his moothie goes with him, and as he puts it he wants to play for the old folk,not bad for a selecfully deaf and slightly blind 89 year old.
Before he got the train to go back to Bristol, he asked me to give everybody his love and thanks for a great weekend, {or was it the pub)
He thought everyday just got better and better.

As i type he is probably making arrangements for next year.

Oooops. It's taken me a while to get back on this thread cos I did some more 'gadding around' after Sweeps.

Tam, I'm glad you liked my songs. The first one you mention "Pint of Contraception" is by John (Mitch) Mitchell from Worksop. I believe Cyril Tawny recorded it a long while ago though the only people I've heard sing it are Mitch and Jerry from my Folk Club (Bideford in N Devon)

"Sing to Welcome Back the Green Man" is by Ann Reader - who's on mudcat as Mrs Scarecrow. Both Ann and husband Dave have written lots of songs, including several about witches but the Witch song you mentioned is not one of theirs, nor was it me singing it. It was sung by Martin - "The Unicorn Man" and credited to a (nameless) friend of his.

Pete - The Yorkshire Grey retained the fabric of the building though didn't it - it merely changed use (from pub to McDonald's - and quite sympathetically I think!!). The Welcome Inn, however, was a burnt out shell and so needed to be demololished due to structural reasons.

Perhaps it is just my overheated imagination, but it occurred to me as we were ferrying the City Wall Winebar stage PA across to the car park on Sunday evening (the police not having opened the High Street due to milling crowds so I couldn't get the car in to load it all up) - that this is probably pretty much what the London mobs of the past looked like.

The chavs make uneasy companions for the festival, but I do think both belong to Rochester, for better or worse. Moving the festival would turn it into a tourist set-piece.

A shop-keeper told me the fracas outside the Eagle Saturday evening was a stabbing. But there was no blood on the ground outside the City Wall Winebar Sunday morning like there was last year....

The police cordoned off the High Street in front of The Eagle on Saturday evening while we were dining at Don Vincenzo's. This right after an ambulance was parked (flashing lights strobing) for about 40 minutes). Looked like it may have been a glassing with one of those hard plastic cups. There was one shattered in the gutter between pavement and road. The rest of the cups were the soft plastic kind.

I could be wrong but I did notice that one cup was different from the rest littering the street.

This was between 6 and 7 pm. There will still families on the street then, little children. There were at least 4 officers manning the cordon.

Demolition is an act of development requiring planning permission. So is rebuilding.

But if land is incapable of reasonably beneficial user without planning perission there is a presumption that planning permission should be granted - not necessarily in ANY form

Has my train pulled out of Rochester on Monday evening I saw a lot of men in Florissant coats patching the damaged roof of the Casino with a large tarpaulin to me much of the roof looked clearly intact and stable enough to have these men Cavorting about up there ?

It will be interesting when the local paper comes out has to the report on the fire and the damage incurred by it which to me from a seat on a train looked minimal.

A lot of folk I was talking to favored the idea of a rumored Tesco store being built on the land rather then it being restored to its former troublesome venue.

I do not think that will happen because "Correct me if Im wrong. If a building burns to the ground the next building does not require planning permission ?

Clearly the building has not burned to the ground so that rule cannot apply so Tescos can not be a buyer.

On Sunday night I took a stroll down the Rochester High Street and I was shocked to see the amount of drunken youths shouting and screaming. This was about 5.30 . It was just a mass of drunken youths A sea of Drunkenness .

This crowd put me off proceeding any further because these drunken youths were focusing there attentions on every one from families with children , Each other and one screamed at me Give us your f.....g Hat ? It was awful. so I turned about and went back to the B&B.

This was a far cry from the pleasant sight the befell me when I first converged on the High street Early Saturday Morning which was wonderful with Morris Dancers and folk behaving themselves In a orderly and pleasant manner and to be able top drink and be Merry.
Has folk are well aware I clearly like me Ale but i do not act like that.

If its any consolation it is not just Rochester and the Medway Towns such drunkenness arises its clearly apparent its a Nationwide problem. Growing at a Alarming rate which will without doubt spoil a lot of things for a lot of people, has usual this is caused by
the minority.

I'm positive that there was a Dunkin' donuts in the Arndale Centre at Wandsworth. If it wasn't actually called that,it was the same ethos. Maybe this is why large parts of The Bill and The Sweeney were filmed there.

That rumumour's been spreading for at least the last 5 years. I don't believe that will happen, for the same thing happens over the 'Dickens Weekend' over Whitsun. It's not 'Sweeps' nor 'Dickens', more the 'dickheads', and it's no different any weekend in Rochester High Street, nor sadly for that many other High Street. The Feral youth of today are allowed to run wild and free, and until the authorities do what they're supposed to do and apply the laws that the rest of us are more often than not forced to obey (because we are easy and compliant targets) I don't see things changing much. The streets are full of Police during the day at Sweeps, but they all disappear at night into their Paddy Wagons, precisely when they're needed - why?? Tam, we've heard, year on year that the Festival is to be moved to Chatham Maritime, and possibly the Dickens Experience. The amount of trouble in the High Street leads me to the thought that it just might happen. I bet there'll be no streer drinking or carrying drink from pub to pub in future, and none of it because of the folkies. Bloody Chavs!
