It might be worth singing were it given a different melody. The oompah-oompah rendition on YouTube doesn't really do it justice.

Well, for whatever reason, that link isn't working (after several tries), so go to this page, click "More Images," and select the 3rd picture.

BLOOD ON OUR LAND
("Fox'Connolly")

When you count all the stars up in heaven
When you count all the birds in the trees
All the men who died for Ireland
Since the British crossed over our sea
Can you count all the hearts that were broken
Can you measure this sorrow and pain
Just remember the men who have died
For this land with their blood has been slain

On a Sunday afternoon in Derry
The people, they marched through the streets
Thirteen died that day for freedom
Thirteen died for peace
But the people, they keep marchin' on
And you'll hear them sing this song
"Take the British soldiers out of Ireland
And don't let them linger on"

For these men have died for Ireland
And so Irish men won't run
We'll stand and fight for freedom
We'll drive out the invading gun
And when we look down at our children
These words we'll say to them
"When you walk through the streets of our city
Then you walk through the blood on our land"

For these men have died for Ireland
And so Irish men won't run
We'll stand and fight for freedom
We'll drive out the invading gun
And when we look down at our children
These words we'll say to them
"When you walk through the streets of our city
Then you walk through the blood on our land
When you walk through the streets of our city
Then you walk through the blood on our land"

Transcribed from this video. Unfortunately, as far as I've been able to gather, no one knows the singer of this song.

The author of the song is credited on on the LP cover as "Fox'Connolly"

I'm looking for something similar - the words I can remember are
Oh woe is me, when will I see my land at peace again
Is blood spilled, have James Connelly and Casement died in vain
Who can be free when bigotry and hate walk hand in hand
For the enemy have come again and there's blood upon the land

Would it be fair? to take the air all alone I chanced to stray
Along the road to Derry Town on a lovely summer's day
The smell of hate was everywhere, death wore an orange gown
And a small child died in the streets that night of bloody Derry Town
and thats it
The record label I think was mainly white with a little red and black on it and it was sung by a female voice (may have been solo, may have been part of a band I'm not sure)

Can anybody help me identify it?

Hi Mike

The song that you are looking for is called "Blood On Our Land".

You are correct that it was on a double cassette album, it was on a compilation called "Greatest Irish Rebel Songs" released by
Derry Records in 1989, the number on the insert is C(2)SDBL527.

This is the only information given on these tapes, no artists
(various artists is all that is given), no where recorded or
anything else just the track listing.

I don't think that I will be able to transcribe the lyrics, (they
have a very heavy brogue to them unfortunately), but I will have a
try if you can't get them anywhere else.

If you, or anyone else, would like the track listings I will put
them on for you.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Cattail !

Tune sounds like a variation on Will there be any freight-trains in Heaven? IIRC.

I doubt if it's on that CD, Jim.

mg.

Yeah - that's the way I was thinking, too. The lines don't sound familiar. I've checked the largest recent booklet of republican songs I know of - and don't see anything resembling it there. I'll try ticking off the unlikely ones from the list and see what's left...

Possibles include 7, 9, 25, 28.

Jim. Titles of tracks 31, 27, 35 may have errors? Not likely candidates anyway.

Regards

Subject: Lyr Req: Irish rebel song i don't know the name
From: GUEST,Mike
Date: 17 Apr 09 - 07:14 PM

Hi All, when i was very young my Grandad used to have a double cassette album called 40 best irish rebel songs.
There was a song on there sung by a lady and the lyrics went something along the lines of:

These men will fight for freedom,
and so irish men won't run.
We'll stand and fight for freedom,
we'll drive out the invading gun.
So when we look down on our children,
here's what we'll say to them,
when you walk through the streets of our city,
then you walk through the blood on our land.

I believe thats the chorus. Unfortunately i cannot remember any more and cannot find any reference to either the song or the album via google. So i ask anyone out there, do you know the title of this song and if so, what are the full lyrics, where can i find an album that contains it or does anyine have an MP3?

Thanks to all

Mike
