Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: bbc Date: 20 Jun 09 - 07:56 AM Hi, folks, I haven't been around Mudcat much lately, but was checking on the Kaelen Paton thread. We spent some time last night with Sandy & Caroline. They are bearing up, but it will be a long, long haul. They have close family still in town to help. Kendall, I'm so sorry that you have having to go through still more procedures & I'm sorry about your Old Songs decision, although I well understand. I was sitting on the front row w/ Caroline at the concert & have spoken w/ Priscilla (both of them local to me) about it. Duane & I will be at the Folk Legacy booth & hope all who are there will come by. Jacqui, thanks, as always, for keeping us informed about the captain's condition. love, Barbara |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: gnu Date: 30 Jun 09 - 02:01 PM So, what's everyone got planned for Canada Day tomorrow? |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: maeve Date: 30 Jun 09 - 02:05 PM We bought a (small but bright)Canadian flag last weekend. I reckon I'll let it fly high and proud, gnu, along with our own USA and Maine flags. I need a Scottish flag too. Ours was stolen. Ummm And this has what connection to our friend Kendall? maeve |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: jacqui.c Date: 30 Jun 09 - 02:23 PM We were supposed to be heading to Albany, via Vermont, tomorrow but have had to put that back a week as Kendall is not well enough to travel right now. The first lot of antibiotics that he was prescribed for the pneumonia and diverticulitis just weren't touching it. We went back to the doctor yesterday - we made an appointment for 2.00pm and then the doctor himself phoned and told him to come in at 12.00. Result - blood tests to check his white count and he has had to have two lots of antibiotics to try and do the job. The threat was that if he didn't improve he might have to go into hospital. The good news is that his appetite is just coming back, he's eaten more so far today than I think he's had for the past three days in total and that has got to be good news. He's off for a chest x-ray this afternoon and another doctor's appointment on Thursday - his doctor is really keeping an eye on him. |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: SINSULL Date: 30 Jun 09 - 03:16 PM The weather can't be helping. More rain today, tomorrow, the next day, the next day and so on and so on and so on... What do Canadians traditionally do on Canada Day? |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: DonMeixner Date: 30 Jun 09 - 03:26 PM Go ice fishing, play hockey and trim their curling brooms. Don Feel better Skipper, thats an order, not a suggestion. |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: katlaughing Date: 30 Jun 09 - 03:26 PM It's good the doc and you all are being careful, Jacqui. The pneumonia I had was not treated aggressively enough and here I am just finally free of it, but still fighting back the side effects from steroids, etc. and some anemia which came along with all of it. The past two months have really been something. Please encourage him to be patient with himself. This stuff really saps your energy; it's important to move about a little bit to keep it on the run, but lots of rest is also necessary. Take care, Kendalldarlin'! |

Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: kendall Date: 30 Jun 09 - 05:56 PM Can someone tell me why my taste buds went south? The following things taste normal: Ice cream Apple sauce eggs Everything else tastes like cardboard. |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: Rapparee Date: 30 Jun 09 - 06:01 PM No Jell-o? Having had pneumonia I think it's because you're so damned sick that you don't want ANYTHING. Your taste buds shut down because all of your body's energy is going into getting well. Yummmm! Eggs scrambled with applesauce! |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: maeve Date: 30 Jun 09 - 06:03 PM TL says nothing tastes good to him either, Kendall. The pneumonia seems to be responsible. Hang in there. maeve |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: Jeri Date: 30 Jun 09 - 06:20 PM Some medications can cause problems with taste. |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: Jack Campin Date: 30 Jun 09 - 06:57 PM Some medications can cause problems with taste. Metronidazole in particular, which you're quite likely to have been given for pneumonia. Taste goes back to normal a day or two after you stop the antibiotics. |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: gnu Date: 30 Jun 09 - 07:09 PM Metronidazole???? Oh dear. That's the stuff that you can't have any alcohol while taking. Kendall!!! Are you okay? |

Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: jacqui.c Date: 01 Jul 09 - 07:58 AM Right now one of Kendall's main sources of nutrition is mega milk shakes. Full fat milk, three scoops of chocolate ice cream and a banana is the norm. He can swallow these and enjoy them, so he takes in more. I discussed this with his doctor the other day and he said OK right now - we'll deal with any sugar and fat issues once he's better. Desperate times call for desperate measures. |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: maeve Date: 01 Jul 09 - 08:01 AM Sounds like a good solution, Jacqui. You know how to reach us if we can help in some way. maeve |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: Maryrrf Date: 01 Jul 09 - 08:05 AM Hey Kendall can I have one of those milkshakes? They sound yummy! |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: SINSULL Date: 01 Jul 09 - 08:51 AM Throw in a little Citrucel to keep things moving or maybe a prune or two. No point in tempting fate. |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: Rapparee Date: 01 Jul 09 - 09:00 AM Heck, those milkshakes should great. Top 'em with some Jello and you have a complete meal. Just imagine Kendall coming out of this all rotund and plump, able to play Santa Claus at Christmas without padding.... |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: kendall Date: 01 Jul 09 - 11:21 AM I'm still LOSING weight! At this rate, by Christmas I'll be all gone..... |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: DonMeixner Date: 01 Jul 09 - 12:13 PM I certainly hope it takes a lot longer than Christmas. Missed you and the immigrant at Old Songs Kendall. There was a hole in the air where you and Jacqui belonged. I understand the why of it but it doesn't help with the missing just the same. Don |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: SINSULL Date: 01 Jul 09 - 01:38 PM HMMMMM Kendall, I can see a way to make a profit out of this. We call it The Captain Kendall Diet (or Kaptain Kendall to make it more catchy). Then hire Kirstie Allie to be spokesperson. Don't worry about paying her. The deal will be $50 for every popund lost and still not regained two years later. You don't want to make the same mistake that Jennie Craig made. Now...this is critical. Jacqui has to develop some new flavors. Bananas, even the smell of bananas, grosses me out. How about Cream Cheese and Chive Or Potato Chip flavor? The Chocolate Ice Cream and Milk Shake Diet...what do you think? Do you have any before and after photos to share? We'll some sort of "proof". |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: katlaughing Date: 01 Jul 09 - 01:56 PM Nothing tasted good to me, either, except applesauce, scrambled eggs, plain toast, and strawberries. If they put you on prednisone, gaining weight will not be a problem, believe me. |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: DonMeixner Date: 01 Jul 09 - 01:57 PM Just add 2 oz. of Mount Gay Eclipse. That should help. |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: catspaw49 Date: 01 Jul 09 - 02:15 PM Nobody ever listens to me but............ Go get some whey protein supplement powder in the chocolate flavor. Recommended after bariactric surgery because they don't get enough protein. Kendall isn't either. If all you can get down are shakes and smoothies, then this is the way (whey) to go. You need to maximize the value of what you're drinking. Also used by many chemo and cancer patients to get the nutritional values they need. Frankly, the best price is at Walmart but its available through health food stores and many grocery and pharmacy stores as well. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: jacqui.c Date: 01 Jul 09 - 02:26 PM I'll have a look at that Spaw - thanks. He's been drinking the Boost chocolate and strawberry for the last few days and eating yogurt. Right now I'm making some chicken soup, but it depends on how it tastes to him so I put a few cloves of garlic in the mix! |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: SINSULL Date: 01 Jul 09 - 02:35 PM Boost with garlic???? No wonder he doesn't want to eat. Is that another English delicacy, Jacqui? |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: gnu Date: 01 Jul 09 - 02:52 PM Garlic, cloves... whatever. A natural herb added to the mix that has known appetite enhancing qualities? This chicken soup is ome good eh? Yeah, I am gowan fer another bowl! |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: maeve Date: 01 Jul 09 - 03:10 PM 'Spaw is correct. Good addition for nutrition. m |
Subject: RE: Kendall - update (June 2009) From: katlaughing Date: 01 Jul 09 - 03:45 PM Yeah, Spaw! I finally went to rice protein, though, Use it every morning in a smoothie made with almond milk, frozen blueberries, two figs, and the p.powder. Yummy!! Also, jacqui, look for Ezekiel bread. It has a good amount of protein in it and the raisin one makes good toast. |
