Hi, folks,

I haven't been around Mudcat much lately, but was checking on the Kaelen Paton thread. We spent some time last night with Sandy & Caroline. They are bearing up, but it will be a long, long haul. They have close family still in town to help.

Kendall, I'm so sorry that you have having to go through still more procedures & I'm sorry about your Old Songs decision, although I well understand. I was sitting on the front row w/ Caroline at the concert & have spoken w/ Priscilla (both of them local to me) about it. Duane & I will be at the Folk Legacy booth & hope all who are there will come by. Jacqui, thanks, as always, for keeping us informed about the captain's condition.

We were supposed to be heading to Albany, via Vermont, tomorrow but have had to put that back a week as Kendall is not well enough to travel right now.

The first lot of antibiotics that he was prescribed for the pneumonia and diverticulitis just weren't touching it. We went back to the doctor yesterday - we made an appointment for 2.00pm and then the doctor himself phoned and told him to come in at 12.00. Result - blood tests to check his white count and he has had to have two lots of antibiotics to try and do the job. The threat was that if he didn't improve he might have to go into hospital.

The good news is that his appetite is just coming back, he's eaten more so far today than I think he's had for the past three days in total and that has got to be good news. He's off for a chest x-ray this afternoon and another doctor's appointment on Thursday - his doctor is really keeping an eye on him.

It's good the doc and you all are being careful, Jacqui. The pneumonia I had was not treated aggressively enough and here I am just finally free of it, but still fighting back the side effects from steroids, etc. and some anemia which came along with all of it. The past two months have really been something. Please encourage him to be patient with himself. This stuff really saps your energy; it's important to move about a little bit to keep it on the run, but lots of rest is also necessary. Take care, Kendalldarlin'!

Having had pneumonia I think it's because you're so damned sick that you don't want ANYTHING. Your taste buds shut down because all of your body's energy is going into getting well.

Metronidazole in particular, which you're quite likely to have been given for pneumonia.

Taste goes back to normal a day or two after you stop the antibiotics.

Right now one of Kendall's main sources of nutrition is mega milk shakes. Full fat milk, three scoops of chocolate ice cream and a banana is the norm. He can swallow these and enjoy them, so he takes in more.

I discussed this with his doctor the other day and he said OK right now - we'll deal with any sugar and fat issues once he's better. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

HMMMMM Kendall, I can see a way to make a profit out of this. We call it The Captain Kendall Diet (or Kaptain Kendall to make it more catchy). Then hire Kirstie Allie to be spokesperson. Don't worry about paying her. The deal will be $50 for every popund lost and still not regained two years later. You don't want to make the same mistake that Jennie Craig made.
Now...this is critical. Jacqui has to develop some new flavors. Bananas, even the smell of bananas, grosses me out. How about Cream Cheese and Chive Or Potato Chip flavor?
The Chocolate Ice Cream and Milk Shake Diet...what do you think?
Do you have any before and after photos to share? We'll some sort of "proof".

Go get some whey protein supplement powder in the chocolate flavor. Recommended after bariactric surgery because they don't get enough protein. Kendall isn't either. If all you can get down are shakes and smoothies, then this is the way (whey) to go. You need to maximize the value of what you're drinking. Also used by many chemo and cancer patients to get the nutritional values they need.

Frankly, the best price is at Walmart but its available through health food stores and many grocery and pharmacy stores as well.

I'll have a look at that Spaw - thanks. He's been drinking the Boost chocolate and strawberry for the last few days and eating yogurt. Right now I'm making some chicken soup, but it depends on how it tastes to him so I put a few cloves of garlic in the mix!

Yeah, Spaw! I finally went to rice protein, though, Use it every morning in a smoothie made with almond milk, frozen blueberries, two figs, and the p.powder. Yummy!! Also, jacqui, look for Ezekiel bread. It has a good amount of protein in it and the raisin one makes good toast.
