There was a really interesting program on PBS tonight. You may read more about it HERE.

In just the past few years, neuroscientists are finding scientific evidence of actual physical changes in the brain due to music. Lots more is discussed and it is exciting news esp in what it may mean to saving music in school programs and music as therapy for stroke patients, those who have Parkinsons, and other maladies. Well worth watching!

Here is the HOME page with more videos and further programs which I think will be shown or I missed and have already been shown.

BTW, we musicians including the voice, have brains which have developed in a different way which has been proven to show better performance in other aspects of life that those who have never had much to do with music.:-)

Hey, I was just about to start a thread on this. I, too, really liked it. And I may even watch several repeats.

What I really, really liked:

  • When the host and Bobby McFerrin switched from the straight march of "Hooray for the red, white and blue" to the syncopated version.

  • And

  • The explaination of harmonics and intervals. That was the clearest illustration of those concepts I've ever seen (Mudcatters are great teachers, but the animated image of a vibrating string really helped me see what's going on with that.

What I really, really missed:

  • A chance to hear someone play a replica of those ancient bone and ivery flutes from 45,000 years ago, so we might get an inkling of what they sounded like.

  • and

  • When the researchers visited that remote tribe in Cameroon, who'd never heard access to Western culture, to see if they heard the same emotional messages in classical music that we do (distinguishing between "Happy." "Sad," and "Scary"), I would have loved to have the roles reversed, so I could get a chance to hear their music, and see if I could distinquish between the ways they express mood in their music.

But yes. Really, really good. Will be watching the repeat.
