Aussie dancer has Trafalgar Square swinging An Australian dance teacher had Londoners swinging to the beat in Trafalgar Square as he took to the famous landmark's Fourth Plinth as part of an arts project.

Excellent article by the more famous Purves. (It's not what you know, eh?)

So was my brother a piece of art? Actually, I think so. He subverted the hip Gormley subversion. He defied fashion. He is not from the Facebook generation, he did not want to promote a PC charity or reassure himself he existed. He loves the music, loves the morris and has put hours into learning the craft since he taught himself by ear at 17. Like all proper artists, he doesn't give a damn about the mockery and will stay up all night, even if nobody is watching. Yep, it was art all right.

"He subverted the hip Gormley subversion" is silly - Gormley's made it clear that this is just the kind of thing he was hoping for - but the last three sentences are bang-on.

I don't see Mr Purves in those Pics, but I do see a couple of lady Morris. The one on the left is a good musician too she plays in the ceilidh band "Committee band". Which will be appearing at StroudCeilidhs.co.uk Apr 10th 2010.

The lady morris dancer with the pipe and tabor is MJ - a musician and dancer with Esperance Morris and Rockhopper amongst others.

Patrick Purves, 56, from Louth, Lincolnshire will appear at the ungodly hour of 4am on Tuesday as a Morris dancer.

A dancer for 25 years until a motorcycle accident forced him to quit, he still plays four instruments and wants to send out a message that Morris dancing is thriving.

"There have been suggestions that it is a dying tradition but it is alive and well and there are still 15,000 dancers in the UK," he said.

Patrick Purves, squire of the Alford Morris, took his place on the Trafalgar square plinth last night for an hour, one of 2 400 to do so.

The participants, who call themselves "plinthers", were chosen by random computer selection from among 15,000 applicants as part of Antony Gormley's living people sculpture, One and Other.
