I notice that there is an American website that offers a folk based cd swapping service.
You list any cd's you've got that you're willing to give away and anyone who wants one can request it.
For each cd you send off you are entitled to request another cd from someone else.
Seems like a brilliant idea. No money changes hands, you can send a cd to one person and request a cd from a different person, but overall no-one loses out.

Is anyone aware of a similar scheme running in the U.K.?

Hmm... so have I! At least in the days of floppies they could be easily re-used.

Old CDs make excellent bird scarers if dangled on string near newly seeded areas in the garden. There's also a kit available to turn a CD into a clock...

Hi there MWH, the American site is www.swapacd.com

It looks really good and is dedicated to CD's and is split into different musical genre.

The Ebay site (above) is ok but a bit clunky compared to the US one.

Assuming the swapped CDs were all paid for in the first place I don't see how any artist can complain. You get rid of a CD you bought but don't listen to any more, you acquire one you will at least listen to once. You may discover a new artist and buy more of their stuff. Would anyone object if you flogged your unwanted CDs at a car boot sale?

Thank you Kampervan; and, I agree with (skw) absolutely. The CD has already been sold and if it moves to another collection, gets played and opens up the new owner to a new artist, why, that's a good thing, isn't it. Cheers,......................mwh

As a recorded artist, I certainly don't have any problems with swapping CDs. If it stays unwanted in one collection, it won't get played, so passing it on to someone else who might enjoy it is good - and if they really like it, hopefully they would go looking for more.

So in the end an artist may only have to release just one single copy of a cd & eventually everyone who wants to hear it & own it will just have to wait until it is their turn to copy it & pass it on. Cracking idea! I think NOT!!!!!!
Let's take away the livelyhood of all our singers & songwriters & then there will be no artists, then no clubs! But worry not any prick with a guitar & a computer will step in & write / play shite!
Then we can copy shite & pass it on!

It would take a hell of a long time to pass one copy around to all the people who want to hear it - assuming there are lots who want to hear it in the first place.

However, yes, I can see that there might be a problem with copying - but that can happen now, just by someone borrowing a CD from someone who's got it.

Personally, I like to have a copy of CDs I like, so that I have all the notes on the songs, etc., etc., but maybe that's just me.

I bought an ex-library, second-hand CD by Madeleine Peyroux, and have since bought, at full price, every available recording she's made.

Had I not obtained the first copy, and loved it, she would have missed the sales.

I'd still like to get her first CD.

While I always make sure I'm buying new music legally, I don't really see a problem with the idea of a CD swap. If you don't swap your CDs, then you'll probably just get rid of them in a second-hand store -- which the musician also doesn't see any money from.

My brother just gave my oldest son one of his old Clash CDs that he doesn't listen to anymore. Isn't that the same concept?

I don't know. It's all a pretty muddy issue.
