Subject: Ride on From: Ferret Date: 14 Jul 99 - 03:14 AM Hi, Can any one help me find the lyrics of a Christy Moore song, Ride on? And a song of a singer unkown to me, 'Nancy Spain' if you can it will save me a lot of hunting. Thank you. Ferret. |
Subject: RE: Ride on From: Helen Date: 14 Jul 99 - 03:18 AM Hi Ferret,
The spooky Mudcat psychic radar must be working again because someone else requested the Ride On song recently. http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=11826&messages=15 I think there might be a link in there to a Christy Moore site, too. Helen |

Subject: RE: Ride on From: Martin _Ryan Date: 14 Jul 99 - 01:06 PM Incidentally, Christy, who has been on a sort of sabbatical for about a year, has just announced a comeback - based around smaller gigs. Good luck to him! Regards |
Subject: RE: Ride on From: Ferret Date: 14 Jul 99 - 08:19 PM Thanks for the info. Irish and rebel songs can geta bit hard to come by in the U.K. But thar are some grate songs. all the best. 26+6=1 Ferret |
Subject: RE: Ride on From: John in Brisbane Date: 14 Jul 99 - 08:54 PM Saw Christy here about 18 months ago in front of (maybe) 700 people. It was not the Christy that I knew and loved from a number of previous performances, BUT the manners of the audience were deplorable - sad to say, constantly yelling out requests during breals and other songs. I would've walked off stage! By contrast a guitarist I know saw him a week or so later at a small venue in the bush, and in his opinion that concert was truly magical. I wish him every luck.

Subject: RE: Ride on From: Rhonda Date: 11 Oct 99 - 05:05 PM I am loking for the chords to Ride On. They may be above me here but I don't recognize that format? any help? |
Subject: RE: Ride on From: Eric the Viking Date: 11 Oct 99 - 06:07 PM Ride on chords as played by the great man himself and written by Jimmy MacCarthy from Cork. Taken from the "Christy Moore songbook" Published by; BRANDON ISBN No; 086322 063 0 Costs about £6.00. Cmi Ab Bb - Its a three chord song. Christy plays it capped up to 3rd fret sometimes. So it becomes; Ami G F. Eric. |
Subject: RE: Ride on From: Maeve from Kildare :) Date: 11 Oct 99 - 06:26 PM Did someone say Christy was making a comeback?! He's my all time favourite, please provide info if you can, i have to see him play! |

Subject: RE: Ride on ^^^ From: Norbert & Gesa Date: 12 Oct 99 - 02:45 PM Ride On True you ride the finest horse I've ever seen, standing 16'.1".or2".with eyes wild and green, and you ride the horse so well, handslight to the touch, I could never go with you no matter how I wanted to. Ride on, see you, I could never go with you no matter how I wanted to. Ride on, see you, I could never go with you no matter how I wanted to. When you ride in to the night without a traue behind, Run your claw along my gut one last time. I turn to face an empty space where once you used to lie, and look for a smile to light the night through a teardrop in my eye. Ride on, see you, I could never go with you no matter how I wanted to. Ride on, see you, I could never go with you no matter how I wanted to. ^^^ |
Subject: RE: Ride on From: Jon Freeman Date: 12 Oct 99 - 03:13 PM Eric, surely you mean Am, F, G I'm trying to pursade a friend who I play with and sings this song to go into the Tamlin afterwards. It uses the same chord structure and I think it would work well. Jon |

Subject: RE: Ride on From: The Duck of the Irish Date: 13 Oct 99 - 12:07 AM Just what the hell is that song about anyway! I really like it, but I'm at a loss as to what's going on. Anybody know? |
Subject: RE: Ride on From: Jan Date: 13 Oct 99 - 02:22 AM A couple of years ago I met a young Irish whistle player in Sydney, Australia (where I live) and she said she had met the person who wrote the song (whose name I've forgotten) and he (the composer) said that it was not a love song at all, as most of us had assumed, but a rebel song! I cannot vouch for the authenticity of this piece of information, but this girl seemed like a very reliable source - she was a lovely, no bull type of person with a great generousity of spirit (and boy, could she play that whistle!). If it is a rebel song, the lyrics seem equally, if not more, inexplicable. So I'm afraid I've probably just confused the issue. Anybody else got any further info? Jan |
Subject: RE: Ride on From: alison Date: 13 Oct 99 - 03:31 AM Here's an earlier thread where we had a go at what it means Ride on slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Ride on From: Helen Date: 13 Oct 99 - 05:30 AM So Alison, does this mean that the Irish whistle player in Sydney wasn't you? You mean there is another female Irish whistle player somewhere in the big smoke? Helen |
Subject: RE: Ride on From: alison Date: 13 Oct 99 - 08:12 AM hahaha..... could have been me.. but I never described it sa a "rebel song".... still there are other Irish people around... but I did wonder when I read tha description ... *grin* slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Ride on From: jan Date: 14 Oct 99 - 02:02 AM Alison, Wouldn't it be strange if you were THAT Alison? A few more details might help. The Alison I knew was here in Sydney for about 9 months then returned to Ireland a couple of years ago (have you come back?). Fair hair, medium height and build. She gave me her spare set of Susato whistles as a parting gift. Does this ring a bell? I haven't yet looked at the Jimmy MacCarthy website which someone mentioned somewhere, but maybe that's where the meaning of the lyrics might be found. Jan |
Subject: RE: Ride on From: Ferret Date: 14 Oct 99 - 09:46 AM it beat's the hell out me what the meaning but it is a very beatiful song all the best ferret |
Subject: RE: Ride on From: alison Date: 14 Oct 99 - 08:31 PM Not me Jan, I did go back to Ireland for a holiday 6 years ago and came back.. but I'm small (5'2) slimmish and a red head.. plus I don't use susatos whistles.. mystery solved.. it wasn't me... hahaha you can see me here or check out Bbc's mudcat resource pages slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Ride on From: polesden Date: 15 Oct 99 - 11:15 AM Ride on is on the Dangerous curves CD,called Dangerous Curves, on there it is attributed to J McCarthy. |
Subject: RE: Ride on From: Eric the Viking Date: 15 Oct 99 - 04:37 PM Yes Jon, I do mean Am F G, but as I have no knowledge of musical theory at all and can't read a note I just transcribed in my head and realised that the chord order was wrong. I actually play "ride on" by including a hammered on C chord(well- some of it) on the way to the F. People who have heard me play it say it sounds good. (Though they can't explain their poor taste!) Cheers. Eric. |
Subject: RE: Ride on From: wildlone Date: 15 Oct 99 - 07:55 PM You can find Ride on, Nancy Spain, and a lot more of Christy's songs in The Christy Moore songbook published by Brandon books ISBN 0-85322-063-0 I hope it is still in print but 2nd hand bookshops usually have a book finding service. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ride On (from Christy Moore) From: GUEST,Guest : Thomas Date: 18 Jun 09 - 02:29 PM I've read the Christy Moore songbook. In it Christy said that people wonder what his song 'Ride On' is about but Jimmy MacCarthy keeps that to himself. This makes sense because Jimmy thinks it is better if a person has their own interpretation of his songs because this is much more important than knowing what the true meaning of the song is. |
