Subject: BS: NRA for Progressives/Liberals???

Well, some of my best ideas come when I'm on the tractor and today was no exception...

I think we need another gun rights, safety training organization for liberals and progressives... Yeah, with the hot-head righties thinking its perfectly okay to highjack town meetings and carring on about how Obama ain't a citizen it may be time for them to know that alot of us liberals own guns too... And know how to use them safely...

I think the right thinks it can just bully the left with their guns and I think it's about time for liberals to stand up and let the rednecks know that we ain't a bunch of limp-wristers that can be bullied...

I donno???

Better take that tractor 'round the field a few more times, Bobert...and contemplate what the OK Corral would be like if it were repeated in Oshkosh, Walla-Walla, Tallahassee, and Kennebunk....and maybe Topeka.

People who HAVE the blamed things often come to a situation where they think they have an occasion to use them. Increase the total numbers (even with the ...ummm...'good' motives) who have 'em, you increase the odds they will find that excuse reason....like being bullied.

Since we don't yet have phasers that can be set on "stun," how about air guns that shoot tranquilizer darts? Anybody who wants to disrupt and intimidate a town hall or other meeting can wind up leaning quitely against a wall, wearing a s— eating grin.

Career criminals know how to use guns better than most gun owners who strut around
proclaiming their "rights". It's rare for a gun-owner to have a shoot-out with a career criminal and win. The self-protection myth for gun ownership is a ruse.

The NRA functions as an organization that is in denial about gun usage. Their role is
not public safety but politicization of gun-ownership which is a money-making operation.

Anyone who brags about their ability to use weapons is either a criminal or an idiot.
There are those in the military who do become accomplished in the use of weapons
and some of them return to join the ranks of career criminals.

Anyone who thinks that shoot-outs accomplish anything useful is neither a liberal or
a progressive.

I like the heck outta that idea, Don...

Hey, Bill, you know I ain't into no OK stuff... Nor are the righties who think it's their duty as an American to have lots of guns... We got abunch in NoVa who love to strap on their "pieces" and walk into resturants together... The operative word here is "together"... Deep inside these guys are whimps but give 'um a gun and they become "the man"...

I am sick of the righties thinking that they are all "the man"... Bunch of punks as far as I can see...

And now they think it's perfectly okay to band together in their little gangs and disrupt public forums... I think if the left let it be known (and only let it be known) that the right ain't got the market captured on guns then the right would have to rethink it's bullying... I'm not saying see gotta shoot at 'um... Heck, if they just understood that the left has had enough of their decades of bullsh*t then maybe they would see what we on the left are talking ibout in restricting guns to responsible people rather than any lunatic rightie...

I am serious... Okay, maybe I do need a few more laps on the Kabuto but I am serious...

Seems that the left has been armed once in my life time and that was in the 60's... Maybe time to re-arm...

I donno???

I think it would be kind of interesting for liberals and progressives (whatever those labels really mean) to join the NRA - in large numbers - and vote to return it to the respected firearms safety and training organization it once was.

Is it really the case that there isn't an equivalent of the NRA for gunowners in the States who aren't actually round the bend, and who want sensible gun controls and rules about training and licences and so forth that will protect them?

The same way organisations like the Automobile Association and the RAC in the UK don't see it as part of their job supporting motorists to be against their being a stiff driving test and reasonable speed limits and so forth.

I was introduced to shooting sports back in the middle 1960s by one of my guitar students. He was an ex-marine, and he had become interested in target shooting in the marines. He and I and a couple of other friends would go to the Seattle Police Department pistol range on Sunday afternoons (Loren wasn't a policeman, but he had a membership in the SPD Athletic Association). We spent most of our time poking holes in paper targets at the regulation 25 yards, but Loren gave us some training in combat shooting.

A situation I would avoid like the plague!!

We were all members of the NRA. But it was not long before I noticed that all the gun safety programs they advertised as part of their "mission" simply didn't exist. Or if they ever did, certainly not in my area. And when gun laws were proposed that seemed quite reasonable to me, the mailings I got from the NRA urging me to oppose such laws seemed highly inconsistent with such things as firearms safety.

Although the laws in each state differ, one is required by law to be tested and receive a license before one is allowed to drive an automobile. This is primarily to assure public safety. After all, one is directing at least a ton of metal at considerable speeds, so reasonable precautions are taken to see that you can't legally take the wheel of an automobile without demonstrating that you know how to drive safely.

And yet, I know of no state or municipality that requires that one know how to safely handle a firearm, despite the fact that one can kill one or more people quite easily with the twitch of one's trigger finger. Or simply by handling a firearm carelessly.

And yet, the supposed safety conscious NRA musters all their forces to oppose any attempts to pass laws requiring one to take a gun safety course before acquiring and carrying a firearm.

I am no longer a supporter of the NRA and haven't been for a long time.

Don Firth

Yeah, Don... That's just it... We need a progressive NRA that is into gun saftey and not into gun ownership as it's centerpiece...

Can you imagine what an attempt to form such a group would cause the current "NRA" to do? They have millions to spend to bully, intimidate, harass, insult, out-lobby, and generally make life miserable for anyone connected with any disruption of their holy message.... *wry grin*
You think all these anti-health care nuts are bad? Just try having meetings about gun law reform!

There's this. And this. Here's a few links, and of course there's also schuetzen.

Not to mention the National Muzzleloading Rifle Association, the Civil War re-enactors, the Mountain Men, and more than a few re-enactment groups across the country who do everything from Greek Hoplites to Vietnam.

Come. Join us. Don't be afraid....
