Well, every suspicion I had about the Paton's was answered today. I met them in Kalamazoo, Michigan for lunch at the Cracker Barrel at 12:20 PM and left them at 4:00 PM. The waitress announced to us that she was going to charge us rent. This was after she got her tip. Every last thing that you might imagine about these two is absolutely true. The are lovely, funny, opinionated and absolutely devoted to one another. We talked about everything you could imagine. The only thing missing was a chance to sing together, and we will accomplish that at the Folk Getaway this fall.

You have often heard me say in these precincts that this is a very special community made up of special people. I am also fond of saying that we get to be friends in a very intimate way here, free of visual constraints, status, etc. I have always felt that it allows us to come to know one another in a very personal way. When I walked up to Sandy we hugged one another like we had known one another a long time, like true friends would. It happened because we do know each other as friends. This was not like meeting someone for the first time, but rather like renewing an old friendship. And Caroline................well, I am just flat out in love with the woman, what can I say.

And when I meet some of you, it will be the same. So get ready to get hugged by a very big Mick, and then warm up the pipes cause the craic will be fierce.

Naw, Rick, but she did clean up everything that Sandy didn't eat, including the better half of a piece of Peanut Butter pie. Sandy and I both swore off cholesterol for 2 weeks prior to meeting so we could order chicken fried steak covered with gravy, mashed spuds and gravy, green beans cooked with bacon, carrots and peas. When it came time for dessert, Caroline calls the waitress over and says, "These two want dessert". She then tells Sandy what he wants and she will just have a bite. Sandy gets about halfway through and she says, "Are you going to finish that?". I started to chuckle and she fixes me with a look and says, "Well I can't let it go to waste". I chuckled again. She is one of the all time great people I have ever met, and so is Sandy. I can see exactly why you have adopted them as parents, Rick.

We talked about everything from The Fair Alison to singing in accents, to stories of our families and past, to politics, to the weather. And they spoke very fondly of you, Rick. And 'Spaw, you already know what Sandy said about you. You are both special to these people.

Have you seen Big Mick's photo? Why, if I weren't about to be married in September I'd be saving up my pennies to go over there to the U.S. and hug him myself. Life or no life, all I can say is, I'm jealous of the Fair Alison.

Jeez Mick, I'm relaxing! I've spent 7 days in a row in the studio finishing up this new album, and since I'm a neurotic son of a bitch, I've agonized over every note. I get home at 8, make Heather's dinner, teach a couple of students (folk records don't sell, so I gotta keep my night job) then I lie awake til 5 am. wondering if I've sung something off-key! If I'd only finished school, I could get a real job!

Caroline did take a doggy bag when we went to dinner last week. Buffalo Wings--even the dip! They are great people who have meant a ton to me for a long time. It's simply wonderful to see them so happy and healthy.

I don't know where it came from, Joe, but I certainly am enjoying the company. These are bright, sharp, people. I guess they are allowed one lapse of good judgement. But if you think that I am going to discourage the attentions of such a great bunch as this, think again. I am privileged, honored and ..................I better leave it at privileged and honored. Well Rick, it's obvious why we were home.....

The last time I mentioned that, with the notable exception of our friend Mick, the female of the Mudcat species seemed to be much better looking than the male, Jeri forced me to start that flatulence thread which now seems to be exhausted..........

And hold up on the group hug there Mick, Karen wants in on it too.........She cannot say enough wonderful things about you and as we are sitting here together reading this, she says she has GOT to get in on this. Hey Rick, what about 'Boots? Yeah, thought so.........

So Rick, wanna' mess around with a dilapidated guitar or somethin'? Maybe restring an autoharp? Or we could go grab a beer and just hang out evacuatin' our bladders and windin' our watches til the "Mick Hug" thing is over.

On a more serious note, I finally bought Rick's CD at Old Songs. I heard so many words of praise about it, but only from Mudcatters, so I was a little wary. (Of course if I'd heard his radio show earlier, I would have jumped all over the CD.) I absolutely love it - love Rick's voice and guitar, love the songs he wrote and those he chose. I've also heard cuts played on one of our local folk shows. Im definitely gonna buy the new one when it comes out. Do you think we could have a CD release party on Mudcat?

I noticed the amazing bbc and David have put a picture from Old Songs up on the website, with Sandy and Caroline, as well as Frank Shaw, Barbara Shaw, Dick Greenhaus, and Animaterra.
