Subject: Tech: Is Google down?! From: katlaughing Date: 26 Aug 09 - 10:38 AM Our internet server has been a bit strange, today, but Mudcat and our bank sites seem to be working well. I cannot get google to come up no matter what I try, including dumping cookies, etc. Anyone else had this happen? Yahoo was a bit slow, but did eventually come up. When I did a search on yahoo for google it just took me to the same error page. Weird. Thanks for any ideas. kat |
Subject: RE: Tech: Is Google down?! From: Newport Boy Date: 26 Aug 09 - 10:43 AM All OK here, kat. I've used google.co.uk and google.com half a dozen times in the past 15 mins. Phil |
Subject: RE: Tech: Is Google down?! From: katlaughing Date: 26 Aug 09 - 10:43 AM Even stranger, if I type in a destination, i.e. "myopera" it searches for google and gives me the same error message about google. I am using Firefox version 3.0.13. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Is Google down?! From: katlaughing Date: 26 Aug 09 - 10:46 AM Thanks, Phil. Here's what it tells me: Connection Interrupted The document contains no data. The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again. It seems the only websites I can get to are the ones in my drop down browsing history. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Is Google down?! From: Azizi Date: 26 Aug 09 - 10:47 AM Kat, I'm still using Internet Explorer and Google is working fine for me. Sorry, I'm not techie savvy. Hopefully, you'll get some help soon from some other folks. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Is Google down?! From: bobad Date: 26 Aug 09 - 10:47 AM All is OK here. I have Firefox 3.5.2 |
Subject: RE: Tech: Is Google down?! From: Jamming With Ollie Beak (inactive) Date: 26 Aug 09 - 10:53 AM I'm also using Firefox 3.5.2 and all the Googles, at least Google UK, Google Canada and Google.com, are working just fine. Charlotte Olivia Robertson (Ms) |
Subject: RE: Tech: Is Google down?! From: MGM·Lion Date: 26 Aug 09 - 10:55 AM I had a bit of trouble accessing Mudscat for half-hour or so this morning [our, UK, time], but no trouble with any other of my bookmarked sites; & all seems to have righted self now. Computers have these hissy-fits, don't they - just like Mudcat posters! |
Subject: RE: Tech: Is Google down?! From: katlaughing Date: 26 Aug 09 - 11:00 AM Hmmm... thanks, folks. After it being a bit slow, I was able to get google on my Rog's "kitchen unit" but still no go on mine. I'll go run some spyware, etc. and see if anything comes up. Thanks, again! |
Subject: RE: Tech: Is Google down?! From: SINSULL Date: 26 Aug 09 - 11:06 AM I had some problems earlier kat using IE. Ok now. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Is Google down?! From: katlaughing Date: 26 Aug 09 - 11:33 AM Thanks, again, folks. I upgraded to the latest Firefox, thanks bobad, I thought I had the latest as I have it set for auto updates, but I found I was using a BETA version, to boot. I am running spybot and ad-aware, but also rebooted before that and have had google come up, finally! Didn't realise how much I rely on it for news, email, etc.:-) |
Subject: RE: Tech: Is Google down?! From: katlaughing Date: 26 Aug 09 - 12:42 PM Oh well, hell! Now it is doing it, again. I can get any of the ones in the drop down history menu, but google or any other which I try to type in etc. it tells me it cannot connect. Spybot and Adaware came up clean. Any ideas? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Is Google down?! From: Joe Offer Date: 26 Aug 09 - 12:52 PM Yeah, run a virus scan, Kat. There is a virus/worm that hijacks your browser when you try to go to certain sites - Google being foremost among them. As I recall, it's a nasty one to remove. Good luck. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Tech: Is Google down?! From: katlaughing Date: 26 Aug 09 - 01:24 PM Thanks, Joe. I have avg run daily scans at noon and so far nothing is showing up, but there is still today's scan to finish. (I started it early.) Anyway, I am just going to quit jumping in here every time it goes wonky and hope I get it figured out.:-) |
Subject: RE: Tech: Is Google down?! From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 26 Aug 09 - 01:43 PM Ahhh...poor kitty...I feel for you but just can't reach.
Shades of the great Netscape IE browser battlefield?
KAT - If you have Java or Active X shutoff - google does not like you - it screws up the google-analytics that are used at places like Mudcat. Check your event-log - at the time of failure - and see what "home ET is trying to phone."
We are into a new era of search engines and they are doing battle. The new MS search engine is cute. Select your engine by your need not by convenience and old habits.
Sincerely, |
Subject: RE: Tech: Is Google down?! From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 26 Aug 09 - 01:52 PM Oh - I was so busy above I forgot my whole reason for dropping in:
http://www.ft.com/indepth/browserbattles
A connection to a series of articels by the Financial Times of London on the Browser Battles
Sincerely,
speaking of ET phone home....examine your log record AFTER you leave the FT site and return to Mudcat....how do they DO THAT? The media and ads and tracking and images just keep on going and going long after it was "left behind" and connection to 173.15.169.153 established??? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Is Google down?! From: katlaughing Date: 26 Aug 09 - 03:26 PM It is virus free as of 1p today, so it wasn't that. garg, I'd heard a piece on npr about the browser wars, thanks for the link |
Subject: RE: Tech: Is Google down?! From: steve in ottawa Date: 26 Aug 09 - 03:46 PM The obvious questions: does Google work with the OTHER browser? (Internet Explorer), or updating to Firefox 3.5.2 A longshot: Power down everything for 10 seconds. Modem. Router. Cut power to Computer. Note that on desktop computer, you MUST switch off the power switch at the back on the power supply (or switch off the power bar). I once had wonky internet performance for months until I realized that (like some USB ports) the internet port on my computer remained powered up even when the computer was apparently shut down (using Windows -> shut down) (this is to allow computers to be turned on remotely over a network). The wonkiness of my connection showed up on certain sites, but not other, less-complicated sites. Everything would slow to a crawl until I rebooted. However, once the internet port was actually powered off, it came up again in a much more stable manner. |
