Has anyone noticed that virtually every time the President makes an important speech, some imbecile does something outrageous, and totally diverts media attention from the topic being addressed? THit time it was Joe Wilson yelling "You lie!". Previously we had the Gates affair brought up at the very end of a major address. And, of course, someone dragged out Sarah Palin to be a VP candidate immediately after Obama's acceptance speech.

And it works! The media, lefties, conservatives and more-or-less neutral commentators blather on about the distraction long enough so that the major point of the address has become foggy in most folks' minds.

Could this be done on (shudder) purpose?

Dick, if ya can't beat 'em with brains, baffle them with bullshit. Seems to have been a long-standing thing in US politics.

I found the site yesterday morning of Joe the Lie Shouter's Democratic challenger in South Carolina, Rob Miller, and donated $20 to his campaign. There wasn't much there when the donations started, but I've watched it grow in the last 48 hours, as many others rushed to donate in opposition to Joe the Lie Shouter.
I just got an email from Rob Miller's campaign that they have crossed the $Million mark. Joe will be sorry he didn't keep his mouth shut.

Here is the email:

"Dear Friend,

Thanks so much for your unbelievably generous support of my campaign: together we've raised over $1 million in small contributions--in less than 48 hours. A new Public Policy Poll out today shows this race in a dead heat. I honestly cannot believe what YOU have done, and I can't possibly let you know how grateful I am.

When I first ran against Joe Wilson in 2008, I did it knowing that, like a lot of Americans, I would be fighting an uphill battle.

Because of the kind of "representation" we've gotten from Mr. Wilson, parts of my district have seen so many jobs sent overseas that almost one-quarter of the residents are unemployed. These corporate giveaways may be great for Mr. Wilson's campaign account, and for Big Finance, but not for Allendale, South Carolina. I know this not only as a South Carolinian, but a husband, father, and owner of a small business.

I served our country in Iraq —twice— because I believe that when your country comes knocking, there is no higher calling than service. It is the same reason I ran in 2008, when nobody gave me a chance, and I managed to get over 46% of the vote against an entrenched incumbent (while being outspent by more than 4:1 in the General Election).

So here I am running again in 2010. Just as determined to bring real representation—let's call it adult representation—to the people of my district, many of whom lack jobs, healthcare, and sadly, hope. Working together, we can change that.

Together we've accomplished an amazing goal in the last 48 hours, and for that I will be forever thankful. In response, the right-wing machine led by Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and others, has mounted a full effort to return Joe Wilson to Congress. Let's make sure they aren't successful.

We've come far, but we need to keep the momentum going to make sure our voices are heard. Your continued support will ensure our campaign keeps building momentum, and that I have the resources I need to defeat Congressman Wilson and the Republican right.

Thanks,
Rob Miller
Candidate for Congress, South Carolina's 2nd Congressional District"

I like the sound of one of those groups... "People against inappropriate outbursts".

From the www.

"Research continues on whether this infection in the state is limited to the South Carolina G.O.P.'s DNA. Earlier indicators of Mr. Wilson's infection were displayed several years ago when he loudly denounced the claim of Essie Mae Washington-Williams as being a daughter of Strom Thurmond. Mr. Wilson called her story "unseemly" and a "smear." Her name today is listed on the State House monument to her father, alongside those of his white children.

It's a great time to live in South Carolina. Nobody's bored."

Dick, don't forget the silliness about the President's speech to school children. I think the problem is that if Obama is allowed to speak unimpeded, there's a good chance people see him as a reasonable, likeable person.
And that has the opposition scared.

I'd be much happier if ongoing legislation were immune to thread creep.
